You don't have to be angry. You can just pity them for not knowing the actual definition of the word "Algebra." You probably won't ever talk to them about your studies in a casual setting, but if you do you can just ask them to solve a system of 3 linear equations and express disdain as they can't even understand middle school level arithmetic. In any other setting where you are discussing math with idiots, you might be tutoring or teaching them and you should just act professionally in that scenario.

In fairness, I understand your anger. I own 2 different copies of Artin. (A very premium hardcover 1st edition as well as a paperback 2nd edition which is my desk copy.) I'm not even an algebraist. We do have to control our rage in front of the normies though. If your goal is academia, you will eventually have to teach them. Your career rides on them liking you as a teacher.
