Splitting is a defense mechanism where as one entity is labeled wholly bad/evil as a balance another must be labeled as wholly good/moral. To say I am projecting is banal because of course the same thing applies to me. It applies to everyone. I'd also be the last person to tell you you should trust the government because they have a very long track record of lying through their teeth. In the stereotypical 'conspiracy theorist' case, as they learn more about all the evil shit the government has done, the more they will start to trust anyone or anything that attacks the government/mainstream media (which is just a branch of the government really). However, a person attacking the government/mainstream says nothing about the trustworthiness of that person. Or in this case an article attacking the mainstream. The two are completely unconnected. Remember that drugdealers/mafia/anarchists/serial killers also hate the government. But because of that splitting many grifters take advantage of their victims distrust of the government to increase their victims trust in themselves by attacking the mainstream narrative.
