14595743 No.14595743 [Reply] [Original]

A former tenured electrical engineering professor at the University of Arkansas who was arrested over a year ago for failing to disclose his ties with the Chinese government and Chinese companies has been sentenced to a year in prison for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about his work on behalf of China. Simon Saw-Teong Ang, who was born in Malaysia and has been a US citizen for decades, had worked at the university for more than 30 years, and was facing up to 20 years in prison. The University of Arkansas fired him shortly after his arrest.

Court documents indicate that Ang filed 24 patents in China. Although his university required its researchers to provide complete disclosures of their inventions, Ang didn’t reveal his Chinese patents to the institution. University of Arkansas’s policy is that it owns all inventions developed by its researchers. Furthermore, when interviewed by an FBI agent, Ang lied about his involvement in these inventions. He also received numerous so-called ‘talent awards’ from the Chinese government without listing them on the University of Arkansas’ conflict of interest disclosure forms, according to the US Department of Justice.

Why did they expect a person who had already abandoned his homeland to seek personal wealth and glory to remain loyal to the University of Arkansas or to his adopted country? That was an irrational expectation, the man had already demonstrated he was incapable of loyalty. Some suicidal messiah complex woketard administrator probably thought they were being anti-racist for hiring a foreigner.

I won't name my school, but there were a lot of Chinese EE professors. The one I had for an advanced math class always let us out early, gave no homework, and we had 2 open book exams. He told us we shouldn't even be getting graduate degrees. He worked with a Chinese student in the glass for thesis stuff though. I had another one for a photovoltaics class. Also easy as fuck and always said "don't even waste your time on solar, China already has the process perfected. If you do research pick something else." A couple of them died mysteriously after I left.

the only reason why foreign people go to american labs is to
1) get paid more
2) have access to better equipment
Nobody said anything about loyalty to the US government lmao. People are not there to care about american politics and national security since they're not american anyway. They're there to get paid and do something they like or boost their authority in a scientific community.

I guess China's gotta get their electric dildo and coffeemaker schematics somewhere. "loyalty to the US government" isn't even what this is about, anyone who honestly believes this chinkoid has done any research of revelance is deluded. This is just another contract between China and universities to launder US patents into the Chinese system so they can continue making their Chinesium knockoffs and the Uni can keep their slave wage professor. The entire trial, one year in prison, it's essentially just a slap on the wrists for the uni. I don't even know why we try this, the whole thing is the reason why we can keep electronics prices low. Yes, circumvention of US patent law is the thing keeping consumers from getting assraped by prices.

No a single immigrant will ever be loyal to a host nation or influence bloc unless they were born in that bloc. They are rootless profiteers by definition and will sell out to the highest bidder.

The early 2010s sentiment of openness was based on the incorrect assumption that third world countries are seeking to become more like OECD nations.

The problem is that many old, conservative administrators still hold this outdated view which is what allows corruption and subversion to seep into Western and OECD countries.

It really is dead.

>Even if you have high citations, most likely only people from your field or those you interacted with (so that’s how they heard about your work) have generated those citations. That doesn’t mean they fully understood your paper and spent enough time trying to read through every detail that you’ve worked so hard on. Your paper will be forgotten very soon. You only need it as another bonus to your CV to advance your career, not to make actual contribution. Science is not about speed. It took Richard Feynman decades to come up with his ideas for quantum electrodynamics, simply by accumulating and reviewing existing knowledge in physics. Rushing won’t help you make a contribution. But as of today, academic science is all about the disgusting Publis Or Perish
culture, implicitly created by the need to seek finance from grant-givers who don’t praise slowness.
It’s interesting that I feel that writing a post here on Quora about academia being a bad life choice may have even more impact than writing research papers.

>High competition in academia is due to lack of positions. There are more nerds than there is money for them. This creates certain rules that many have to follow in order to allow for easier selection of appropriate candidates. The filtering process may not even involve scientific criteria in any way! Wrote a tiny bit of doubt in your research statement when applying for a tenure-track position rather than highly-emotional passion-fueled motivational crap (doubt is a normal part of cognitive process in science, assholes!)? Next!

>(Applies to the Western segment of academia) Highly politicized campuses. This is related to the previous point also, since if you don’t follow the rules, you’re outta college. Said a terrible joke during a lecture to amuse your students? Out of college, you sexist/racist dick! Also, enjoy visiting tons of so-called “trainings” about PC culture and diversity.

It's a misunderstood policy. The university does not own the entire patent, it owns a part of it, usually because it partly for its development just like private companies do. The actual reason is because they provide startup funds for postgrads/postdocs who want to start companies with that IP. A lot of the time they do not take ownership if they don't invest. In many other grants they are not actually allowed to patent the work.

A lot actually, whether they really comprehend what they read is another matter. Third worlders are commonly targetted by a lot of scam companies that promise them jobs that don't exist or human trafficking propoganda. They get a very retarded perception of what Western countries are actually like and then make the most bitter demoralisation posts about racism, discrimination and shitty job markets and culture in Western countries when their delusions are broken.

>You would be absolutely shocked to know how many braindeads are joining the TI / Software market because it gives "a lot of money" in third world countries. I sometimes wonder what will become of the software industry.. if this is another delusion.
Well this is very common because people are really retarded about researching job markets which, tbf, is not easy to begin with. Governments purposely hide employment rate data to keep salaries low and domestic companies competative. It's hilarious when I see retards study CS/IT in Europe, which doesn't have a tech industry, and then they expect US tier salaries. There are also huge myths surrounding prestige and translatability of degrees too. It's common to see stupid shit like "you can work anywhere with an Engineering degree". The reality is that graduating from a specific department gives you access to a (usually local) specific job market (again based on local industry). Even international companies have a relatively small number of recruitment pools, and those are based on incredibly random universities, not the ones people usually assume (ex. Washington and Arizona are some of the best for tech in America). I targetted my own uni because I researched it and saw the locsl aerospace companies heavily recruit from it.

>> No.14596133

The lesson should be that you should always look at where alumni are actually hired and for what salaries. If the department doesn't post stats on that it's usually trash. Never, EVER study a degree just to get the degree.

And finally for academia don't go to deparment with shitty research groups. The grants are not distributed like you think it is. Sadly carving out new research communities is next to impossible.

I don't know a single PhD alumni who is native and wanted a Professorship who didn't get it. Don't let people gaslight you, if you work hard you can make it.

Often times faculty of all types, so both teaching and research, can be filled with just about anyone at any minor university, it's not a hard job any midwit with a doctorate can fill it good enough. Though if it's filled with an Asian the university will generally be looked upon more favorably by foreign institutions, and for the time being every uni's income is overwhelmingly from foreign students. American universities are basically addicted to foreign students, they have to take them because they've grown themselves to a bloated baseline, where just to stay solvent they need the income.

You also need to take into account that they will suffer through some even bigger filter inside the US. The company can also terminate the contract. What do you even mean by this? Feeling the need to move to a white majority country full of people that hate you in itself is falling for propoganda. Abandoning your entire identity, roots, culture and family for the chance of making a little more money is not a light decision.

People have a completely wrong perception of what it means to be an immigrant. They look at the top grads from IIT and Tsinghua and assume their lives will be like that. Then when they get into debt and fail to make it to anything resembling the living standards they expected they post stupid demoralizing shit on the internet which is then misunderstood by people who come from better backgrounds.

It's not even a filter. The system is designed like that. The H1B visa literally exists so that companies can hire us, not for our expertise, but to drive native wages down and make domestic companies more competative.

If you cannot accept your role in this system and you think you are special and above everyone else then you absolutely will not make it.
