"Board culture" is ephemeral thanks to the fact that 4chan posts are also ephemeral and people being obsessed with "fitting in" and "being one of the lads" (they don't wanna get called "newfag" or "tourist").
As such, culture can easily be replaced by astroturfing whatever you want to change about it and making it seem like it's popular. Just having a Discord or IRC server with like 10 people persistently shilling a certain idea is enough for medium-sized boards.

I've found that most people who I IRC'd with in the 90s (or who were modemmers in the 90s) moved on to one or another "social media" platform, esp. if females. Most of them are still on twitter or facebook, etc. esp. after censorship took hold and many of them were easily swayed into thinking there were "wrong opinions."
