It helps to study what youre been interested in since you were a kid. That way youll actually use your degree and actually work in the field AND actually be able to be of advancement in it.

I cannot understand people who chose a field while filling out the paperwork and hoping youll enjoy years of school on it.

I’m trying my hardest to finish college and get a job I’ll hate just because I’ve lost all interest in everything except a girl I met online and now I feel like I’m playing a video game to beat all the missions and win over the princess. Yes it’s sad I know but it’s the only thing keeping me going

>> No.14536001

As long as you haven't learned college-level math, you will never be a real man. Men are characterized by having better quantitative skills. Even STEM women are more man than you!

No. Both of my parents are immigrants, and they had a particularly rough time setting themselves up here in America when they came. My dad worked a factory job, but he soon developed an addiction to heroin and consequently walked out on my mother and I. I couldn't find a proper father figure growing up, and my mother was constantly working, so most of the advice I got were from my friends, who were juveniles and had similar circumstances as mine. We would commit petty crimes, vandalize, and skip class to do drugs. This was in middle school mind you. It wasn't until I got to high school that the AP calculus teacher noticed I wasn't just a typical burn-out as evident by my ability to perform well even if my academic record was a little shoddy and sporadic. He encouraged me to join my school's cross country team and get to know some of the people from that club, which segued into me joining the robotics team, which I became the captain of my senior year, and the mathematics club (my school had one shockingly). He was also a die-hard Catholic, and he had a religious club he'd host after school on some days that I'd drop by to, and we'd study the Bible. We developed a very personal relationship, and he'd often stay after school well into the evening to chat with me and help me with my homework. It proved to be a very, very, very difficult time for me, but he helped me develop an immaculate work ethic and helped me better define my goals and what I want in my life than anyone else, which got me into a great college, and I even did pretty well on the Putnam competition (although I wasn't a top scorer by any means) thanks to his encouragement. I've since graduated with a PhD in computational science and engineering with two bachelors in mathematics and computer science under my belt. I did some work for the Beijing Genomics Institute and Fermilab, which I loved, and now I'm currently doing some work for a quantitative hedge fund in Chicago.

I can still remember having an LSD trip when I was about 14 and grimly considered ending my life. I thought I would've grown up to be the kind of person my dad was unless I hadn't died from doing something stupid. I've since forgave my parents, but my father sadly passed away before I was in the right place to do so. I'm married to great person and hoping to get pregnant soon. I still have a wonderful relationship with my teacher, who has since retired. We play board games and have barbecues from time to time. Without him, I very well could've went down a dark path with an early death waiting at the end. I can't re-pay him enough for his acceptance and willingness to guide me through the trials of life.
