what is /sci/s take on global warming?

imho obviously nothing will happen..
just need the confirmation from real /sci/tards

Well as the world's temperature rises we can expect to see deviations from current weather patterns. Things like hurricanes should get more powerful as well as last longer. Once the arctic ice finishes melting we can expect to see drastic changes in the ocean currents, which will it self effect migratory paths of fish and sea animals along with possible their breading cycle.

Depending on how the air currents change we could see ether more or less rain fall in the northern hemisphere. Now while more rain would produce flooding it would generally be good for crops, where as a lack of rain fall may dry out the soil.

Also the overall solar input in the visible spectrum should decrease slightly due to the increase in expect cloud formation and moisture in the air.

Of course there's more that can happen, and the intensity of these effects is dependent on just how much warmer the planet gets, which is it self whole debated. Personally I'm inclined to agree with the larger (though not absurdity so) estimates rather then the smaller ones.

That the Earth's climate is getting warmer is pretty well evidenced; the real debate is as to whether it is due to man-made causes or just Earth's wacky climate cycle.

co2 does make the planet hotter, but is this a bad thing? ice caps melting will make the oceans rise and change underwater currents like the gulf stream, and also destroy human habitations near the water, is this a bad thing?
crops will fail and people will starve, is this a bad thing?
not for the planet or for other forms of life on it, they will survive and live on. global warming, and any arguements for any other kind of preservation are all about human sustainability. human beings are not teh only form of life on this planet, and things will continue after us. probably better off.
and in teh end if you really want to stave off global warming, there is several things you can do:
1. kill yourself
2. don't have children
3.ride a bicycle
4. stop using electricty(UNLESS you live in phoenix,az where we get out power from nuclear and hydroelectric, and soon to be sloar tower...eat a dick faggots)
5. dont eat processed foods
6. dont buy anything from stores
7. stop breathing(see number 1)
the logic behind this is simple, all of these things create carbondioxide emissions and warm the planet. if you really want to save the planet from global warming then do all of these things. otherwise stfu about this crap. dont try to force your ideas and beliefs on other people hoping you wont have to change. fucking ecofaggots

Global Warming should help us move towards using Nuclear Power. It's better than fossil fuels anyways. I just rage when people mention alternative energy sources and exclude Nuclear. Water, Wind, and Solar may be good, but they're very situational depending on what part of the Earth you're located. Nuclear can be used just about anywhere.

Accidents are inevitable. With large scale power generation, large scale accidents are inevitable. But we've gotten pretty good at safety engineering. Military, aerospace, medical engineering, etc. routinely make highly complex systems with very low failure rates.

The Russians cut corners on the RBMK designs so they could use low grade fuel and make plutonium for nuclear weapons. It was an unsafe design from the start. Knowledge at this point is refined enough to do it right.

>hurrdurr chernobyl
That was caused by the russians doing some stupid risky shit with an unsafe reactor design that was considered obsolete by the time of the accident. With modern reactor designs it is virtually impossible to cause a meltdown on the scale of chernobyl. AT WORST, you might be able to deform the fuel rod assemblies from the heat before emergency features kick in and shut that shit down

>> No.1403249

>>1403185
No, it's not unsafe. The Chernobyl plant used a bad design that no engineer would use. It was built on too tight a budget. Such designs are completely illegal in the developed world. You would NEVER see such an accident occur in France, for example, where 80% of electricity is from nuclear plants. Such accidents are easy to avoid.

Right. To be specific: positive void coefficient (low or boiling coolant speeds the reaction!), partial containment (full containment would have been expensive since there's a crane over the reactor to install or remove fuel rods).

It was a recipe for disaster. The fact that it happened was somewhat inevitable. It wasn't anyone's specific fuckup and once the process started there was no way to stop it.

Fun fact: there are still RBMK reactors in use today.

About the nuclear though. It's safe yes, but we really need to be considering what you do with the spent uranium. Sure, it doesn't take much to put out a shit ton of power, but let's hypothesize that our society does exist for a long time, it all adds up, and what do we do with the fuel then?

You could say, chuck it into the sun! But I guess the question is, can we store all of it safely until we have the technology to shoot extremely heavy metals into space like that?

I've heard somewhere (can't remember the exact source) that if all the world magically switched to nuclear power today, we would run out of uranium in a few years. Of course there's shit like waste reprocessing and thorium extraction, but that requires uranium prices to be very very high before it becomes economical.

Haven't done my homework there as much as I should (so feel free to discount my opinion) but I don't think it's as big a deal as it's made out to be. It's highly concentrated polluting material, but I think that's preferable to a much larger volume of polluting material that disperses globally, as you have with coal power.

By no means am I saying sources like coal are better, quite the contrary! I'm just saying that nuclear IS an option, but we should still focus on completely clean sources of energy with no waste, such as wind, solar, geothermal, wave, hydro etc. I think if we use nuclear to help us out while we develop those technologies, it could work out, but I don't think nuclear is a long term. We can reprocess the waste to make it even more concentrated, but there is still waste material that we are currently just burying underground.

>> No.1404041

>>1403495

I dunno. There's plenty of bad shit underground already (that's kind of where the uranium came from in the first place). Vitrification, if I'm understanding it correctly, should more or less prevent it from contaminating water or spreading around as dust.

It's not perfect, but considering what we get out of it, better than a lot of the alternatives.

Wow, why are you even here? Do some research before making a claim like that.

The Earth is actually on the upswing of a 10,000 year cycle called a Milankovich Cycle. It basically means we have an ice age every 20,000 years or so. In a hundred years or so, temperatures will reach a peak. In 3-400 years, people will be complaining about global cooling as the temperatures go from a peak to a valley.
