1316794 No.1316794 [Reply] [Original]

If a massive electromagnetic storm fried every piece of technology on Earth, everything that has wires, transistors, tubes, mother boards, whatever. Everything from communications, to electricity to machines that run off electronics (virtually all of them) if all that were gone, even temporarily, sending the civilized world into a massive plunge.....

What would it be like in a day? A week? A month? A year?

After the mass chaos and rioting ensued, do you think people could/would ever respect government authority again? Would our system of government even be relevant or in place?

How would you survive? Who WOULD survive? What would be the most prized possessions? What would be valuable? What would be worthless?

It's an interesting thought.....I'm convinced after watching Katrina, that we're literally like a week away from being in the stone ages where people run wild, raping and killing and robbing each other.

I am in no way prepared for an apocalypse myself. But I don't think an electromagnetic storm would be the end of the world as we know it. For starters, only one side of the earth will get fried, right? And guns will still work. The government has more guns than rednecks. Won't take long to clamp down some form of order.

Right, everything electrical based goes down hard.

That means almost every mode of transport except for pedal bikes and the like, there are no communications systems up and running apart from the dude with bikes and some carrier pigeons.

Resources can't be moved due to lack of transport, and there isn't even a shadow of efficient logistics because there are no methods of communication.

And the police forces won't be able to do much outside of their immediate local area.

Yes, maybe the big cities would be screwed a bit more but whatever. An EMP phenomenon is not the fucking apocalypse unless there's an invading force or some shit.

Simple cars would be easily repaired I agree.

But what fucking vehicle since the 70's doesn't have an engine management control system.

That's the issue, it could be okay if we were a simpler society but we aren't, we rely far too heavily on fine tuned electronic equipment.

I don't think even a "massive electromagnetic storm" would ruin all electronics. Plenty of stuff is shielded well enough to survive, and anything powerful enough to really ruin everything would have much more dramatic consequences...

I know, hypothetical scenario and all that, but it's kinda pushing suspension of disbelief a little too far. At some point you need to know what does and doesn't work, and the whole thing just sorta falls apart.

>> No.1318459

Armored vehicles that have basically no windows are giant Faraday cages. They would be practically unharmed. Think about it.

>> No.1318469

>>1318459

Well, close, a Faraday cage should be grounded, but you're on the right track.

And there's stuff better shielded than that (mu-metal and such). It doesn't 100% stop all radiation, but anything that can penetrate it enough to cause damage will also probably melt the entire power grid and just generally fuck shit up.

If you have to worry about whether your pre-1980 car will still start, you're probably dead anyway. Riots or whatever aren't your biggest concern.
