What is this bullshit about being 21 grams lighter when you die?

More testable hypotheses needed before we /sci/entists can draw any conclusions.

You shit yourself?

Every bit of gas in your lungs actually leaves your body unlike while you breathe.

The measurements have been done in a closed system, apparently.

Thus: more testable hypotheses needed!

>> No.1315998

IIRC it was confirmed as a fact a couple hundred years ago, I'd like to see it retested.

I don't believe in the soul, there is probably a real explanation for it.

>> No.1316001

Duncan MacDougall determined the soul weighing 21 grams based on the average loss of mass in the six patients within minutes or hours after death.

OP here

My uncle was saying how when someone dies they weigh 21 grams less because their soul leaves the body. I told him about the permanent air pocket in the lungs and how it's closer to 2 grams but I need more arguments.

>> No.1316007

Testable hypothesis #1
Certain microorganisms (21 grams worth) flee the body in response to the death of the host.

Exhale for me............now breathe in............now exhale..........but keep exhaling.........now put your mouth into a position as if you were drinking through a straw. Force every bit of air out of your lungs now. Theres always something left.

It wasn't exactly 21 grams each time. It varied a lot from case to case.

the scales used for the experiment (which was done over 100 years ago) were likely not that accurate or precise.

For about a year and a half, I would send my extended family links to Snopes on a weekly basis referring them directly to the relevant article debunking what they just sent me. I haven't had to doe it for 6 months or so.

I also had to train my mother not to download files from forwards. "Mom, copy/paste the subject line into Google and watch the video online." "That's too much work!" Dumb bitch. I am done removing viruses from her computer.

well one theory is that your body completely relaxs so all built up gases escape

Probably it's because your lungs deflate when you die, and the change in weight is the amount of air exhaled.

That bullshit about your soul weighing 21 grams is just stupid.

the mass of energy is so small that its measured in some unit like au or something, anyway any energy lost would be irrelevant

>> No.1316127

You soul weighs more depending if you are a good person or bad person - the badder dude you are, the heavier it is, thus making it harder to ascend to the heavens. There have been reports of souls being SO heavy that they actually fall instead of rise, so heavier souls fall into the depths of hell.

If you get 21g lighter then it means your soul is heavier than air and is going down. If your soul was lighter than air and going up (see: helium) then your body would get 21g heavier.

It's bullshit anyway.

>> No.1316158

>>1316150
your theory is bullshit, the 21g thing has evidence

>> No.1316161

Look. Say your lungs contain a volume V of air with density <span class="math">\rho_1
. When the air leaves your lungs, sure your weight decreases by <span class="math">\rho_1 V g
(g = earth gravity), but your buoyancy also decreases by <span class="math">\rho_2 V g
where <span class="math">\rho_2
is the density of air outside your body. The decrease in the mass registered on the balance is only <span class="math">(\rho_1 - \rho_2) V
, which is only a small fraction of the mass of air that was in your lungs, which probably wasn't very large in the first place.
