And I don't believe in a soul, or at least say I don't, but that idea has been forced upon me from everyone else since I was a child.

I am an atheist and I don't believe in a soul, period. I do believe in consciousness.

The girl isn't conscious, no brain function, she is not aware of her own existence, therefore, she does not exist in that sense, there is no reason for her to be alive, no contributing factors to the world, or to her own mind, no thought. Being brain dead is like being real dead.

Microtubules in neurons may possibly create some electromagnetic magnetic form of conscience that is not directly connected to the brain, but may float around after the brain releases it (aka dies) as some kind of psuedo-conscious cage. Whether or not this cage lasts or goes anywhere is not clear.. it's not clear if it even exists, at that. But if it did then it may lend a bit of substance to typical ghost bullshit. You know how many ghosts seem to appear near houses with abnormally high voltage wiring all above them (and things like wires intersecting over the house)? Maybe those attract random disembodied shells that gain enough energy to attempt to express themselves briefly by hooking into our functioning brains, like some kind of brief telepathic hijack/hallucination.

This is really out-there stuff though and I don't personally believe any of it, but it's about as scientifically close to an afterlife as I could possibly consider. Or more like, as rationally close to one, since so far we have been unable to test such ideas via scientific means.

Many people thought that nuclear physics was bullshit, too until the first nuke was detonated.
