These are my current options for uni. I know they all suck, but which should I do, most of these can and do lead to either MA or PHD degrees which I very much intend to do.

Materials engineering has little to do with product design. Product design is more like marketing bro, you're looking at how people use products and trying to find a niche area where you can create a new product to fill a void. You're not really doing a lot of technical stuff, that gets delegated to the real engineers.

I'm not butthurt. You aren't interested in learning, you're interested in having a degree that can get you paid. Here's the deal, I am in a seriously tight financial situation, I cannot afford to go to college more than once unless I get a degree the first time that gets me a well paid job. As for the Arts, I have a miniature library in my shitty dilapidated house which includes works of philosophy, politics, law and just novels in general. I enjoy painting and whenever I have the money I buy paints and paint, But I will not go Into any subject that means I could end up jobless after uni. I can't afford it.

You shouldn't simply project your views on everyone. Lots of people find more joy in science and engineering that they find in languages and arts. I like culture and arts, but only to the level of hobby, not to the level of making it my day job.

Not the guy you're talking to originally, but think of it like this:

Imagine a society without art. No music. No paintings, No posters, No architecture. No novels. No form of any other literature, for that matter. No industrial design. No television. No plays. No web design. No fonts. No clothing. No photography.

Can you think of a society like that? Saying the arts have zero practical benefit is absurd. It's not like there's a clear delineation between the arts and sciences when they're so tightly connected. When the first human had the idea to flake off pieces of flint to form sharp tools, that is an art. When you view this website and find it convenient to navigate with easy-to-read fonts, those are arts. I admit that way too many idiots go into university and think they can waltz their way into a career that's all fun and games, but there's no way that art has no "practical use."

>> No.1295228

>>1295161
>They refine and give shape to the soul
I do not really believe in a soul, but I assume its the equivalent of accumulated memories and personality am I right?
in that case
to what state is it suppose to refine the soul to?
why does it need to be refine in the first place?
why cant practical knowledge and the experiences of applying it do the same thing?

>> No.1295440

>>1295218
What this guy said. Brilliant, and thank you.

>>1295228
I wouldn't say 'the soul' was simply accumulated memories and personality.

Art covers all the things that make us want to do the practical stuff. If all you've ever wanted is to execute practical tasks, then I don't suppose you know what I mean, but I don't believe that is all you want. Art is about emotion, thought, the lability of our experiences of time and memory, among other things. When you read a book and discover a description of an experience that you have had, that you thought no-one else had had, described by someone who died long before you were born, you've made a connection with another human heart and mind which couldn't have been made in any other way. For a moment, you've stood where they are standing, and your understanding of the life they describe is deepened.

Other times, it's the differences that can occur despite the essential humanity we share that excites us. These are things you don't get from conversation or reading a map.

>> No.1295445

>>1295440
PS: Standing in the shoes of so many others, of different sensibilities, alive and long-dead, improves our ability to live. It enlarges us, because it increases the scope of our understanding and empathy.

Computer science/applications. You can get a good programming job with these and further education in a masters or phd will be a good useful option.

Product Design... this is a bit of a shit degree quite frankly, if someone wants a product design they go to an engineer... most engineers specialising in creating new products also learn aesthetic design and ergonomics as well.

Architecture... An awesome field if you can get work. If doing this you should aim for a masters. Only down side is that getting into the field is fucking hard. There are allot more architecture students than there are jobs.

Psychology... good degree choice. Plenty of opportunity to study at a masters and phd level and plenty of applications in real life... either academically or in industry. Loads of people choose psychology as a 'easy' degree though and if you want to work in the field you should aim for a phd.... there are thousands of secretaries with degrees in psychology after all.

My choice would be Computer Sci but choose what ever you want to do.

Studying the Arts at university is pointless.

Art is a valuable thing... but peoples skill in the arts is formed by constant practice.

If you want to become a great painter or write a novel or make a film you should just do it... art degrees are worthless. people can graduate with a degree in animation or fine art who are unable to draw or paint... tutors will tell students all art is subjective instead of telling them that their work is crap.

All a art degree gets you is a shit load of debt.

He solely said that engineering and science isn't just studied by those looking for a degree that can get them paid, but ALSO by people who "are interested in learning". People study science/engineering for the sake of broadening their worldview too.

Sure, it goes hand-in-hand with arts, I completely agree with that. But who are you to say everybody's main focus should be on arts-for-the-sake-of-arts and secondary focus on mainly-usable-knowledge?
