Ask a physicst work at the LHC anything (physics or science related).

Maybe I will answer, maybe.....

Currently, I think we are at 7Tev, although im not exactly sure (could be alittle more now). They are planning shut-downs in 2012, and 2015 for upgrades. Not sure what the Max they want to reach is though.

Current beam status is given on LHC page1

As, far as infomation.
There are many different groups with differnt dectectors

ATLAS = General physics
CMS = General physics
ALICE = Quark-Gluon
LHcb = Charge parity violations
....
etc

Each group has a different machine, at a differnt part of the tunnel. Each group is responsible for collecting there own data, anaylsis, etc.

Each machine is made up of tons of different types of dectors that have very specific jobs.

Do you realize that your very first (and only) test to fire up the LHC worked? The entire area has been caught in a time loop ever since that first successful test. You've already made this thread like fucking 400 times already since then. You guys just keep looping and repeating.

It's like you're stuck as an eternal newfag.

Yea here's a question
Do you send particles around one at a time, or do you just have a beam of particles?
Also, how can you tell apart the presence of a particle from random instrument noise?

Why do some people say black holes "rip the fabric of space/time". I mean isn't it just a collapsed star with an event horizon, I mean we know light is affected by gravity so why is it so scary that something with so much mass/gravity would encompass light as well.

TLDR: Do you think black holes really as enigmatic as the general populous thinks they are? Is mystery I'm missing?

also not talking about primordial black holes or micro black holes, but its the same premise..

Particles travel in beams.
We refer to them as "bunches".
There are many many partciles in a "bunch".

Particle detection is a very big field.
Is there any specific particle dectection you are refering too? What kind of random instrument noise are you talking about?

Not OP, but I have done work in this area. Random instrument noise can be quantified. In HEP everything is about statistics, so instrument noise can either be quantified into uncertainty and greatly reduced in conjunction with other detectors.

For example, photomultiplier tubes and photodiodes have a "dark current", which is a current that runs even when no light is incident on the detector. The nature and quantity of the noise can be measured, and the thresholds for detection of actual stuff set well above the noise level.

Instrumentation noise is not the only problem. People are usually more concerned with background radiation, whether from cosmic rays or from soil at the site. It's not always practical to shield cosmic rays, so the expected background is calculated and taken into account.

Finally, a modern detector at the LHC has thousands of channels and puts out gigabits of data per second. Not all that data can be realistically saved. There is a system called the Trigger that looks at the data in real time and looks for "interesting" events.
