There is a good amount left in the tank on landing, it would take a while, plus it was leaning and sensors got damaged. FAA is OK with a controlled detonation in this situation. They have the data they need and want to get on with development and SN11.

landing legs were out. From labpadre's stream it looked like the problem was that it had a little bit too much speed on touchdown. Just needed that extra last-minute push.

But anyways the concept of the flip-landing maneuver has now been proven, which is huge progress. Just a matter of executing all the details.

Fuck, I saved my old job a shitload of time and money when I did menial manufacturing shit for the north sea by suggesting we throw aluminium parts that were cut from a profile, drilled holes for bolts and were supposed to have their sharp edges graded off by hand into a fucking cheap ass cement mixer filled with sand used for sand blasting and just make a lid of sorts from thick tarp and a lockable rim.

Tumble that shit for half an hour and there wasn't a sharp edge left 100 parts, taking the sharp edges off 100 parts would have taken 5 men several hours. That's just one example of several.

Also if anyone is interested, the Starship image is about 31 centimeter-per-pixel resolution, there are spy sats are as low as 7 centimeters. Apparently by law companies like Maxar are not allowed below 30 centimeter which is why the resolution of commercial sat images never seems to improve much over the years. I expect those regulations will be lifted as other countries develop their commercial imagery sats.

The future will be crazy, imagery constellations surveilling all of the earth in real time and high resolution. A global surveillance net, tracking everything and feeding the data into predictive algorithms.

Yeah, now that I think about this this idea makes more sense. If there was a propellant leak then it wouldn't have taken 10 minutes for it to explode. Likely the fire under it caused a failure of some sort.

It did. It came straight down onto the pad, but when it lit all 3 engines for the flip it thrust way off course and had to float back.
I suspect that in the future they'll offset the descent vector so that when it comes time to flip back vertical, it results in the ship essentially zeroing lateral velocity above the pad instead of overshooting and flying back.

I think SN15 has all barrels accounted for (so it can't get the presumably fully half-covered one) and IIRC has a pretty large patch that may be full barrel height, but not one complete half covered.
Actually, I checked, and SN11 has the patch I was thinking of (full barrel height or very close), SN15 had very few tiles on the common dome section when it went in for stacking, don't know if they've added tiles after stacking before. So the very covered barrel is on neither of them, we'll see if it gets used on a later one.

Looking at the video again the fire suppression system really doesn't seem to be shooting anywhere near starship.
Coming down tilted with a fire underneath likely also contributed a lot though.

No but they're like 99% of the way there and closer than ever, that's what counts. Whatever was the problem, be it poor throttle control or weak landing legs, it's a very minor obstacle for them.

An SSTO Starship with a docking port on the nose would be an insanely quick way to add pressurizable volume to space stations. The port would have a bulkhead directly behind it leading to the methane tank, which could be cut through once the ship was vented of all propellant.
Astronauts could even detach the engines and ship them back on the next standard Starship supply run.

stupid muskards dont realize that for starship to work even once, a thousand million impossible design problems must work perfectly fine.

one of those is the legs, its just an impossible design problem. The reentry needs them to be yes or yes inside the skirt, if they are outside they will 100% add a ton of weight and fuck up the heat shield. if they are inside theres no way they work and/or they will fuck up engines at several stages

face it, were dying ont his rock
