Honestly, I was seriously considering how easy it should be to make something like this nowadays. There's a bunch of shitty university cubesats being launched nowadays, all that it takes it for one to have an actual computer and not just a shitty microcontroller for you to be able to take it over. I know some missions that have this, however their security is usually high for communication requirements. I want to write up a report on how much it would cost to launch your own private tracker/p2p file sharing server that you could talk to with UHF or something. Just the bare minimum to make it off-world and untouchable by some government agencies. I think that it is still much too expensive for pirates, but it should definitely be possible in a few years.

rocket engines by definition operate on the edge of failure. The margin between being useful and failing is quite thin. This is also where the difficulty comes into play: faults in the system are magnified by the intense conditions, meaning that compared to other engines a rocket engine has to go further in the approach towards perfection.

Well Gale Crater is pretty interesting too, but they chose it for it's high volume of sedimentary rocks that outcrop (because it is believed to be a dry evaporite lake). Jezero Crater is a bit different. It is floored by basalt, like the rest of the surface, but the difference is that it had a huge inlet of water which lead to a delta. Instead of evaporite sed rox everywhere like we see with curiosity, Perseverance sees tons of basalt that has been weathered by water, along with active sed rox deposited as part of the delta system

I think the (new) way of doing it should be JPL just sending a rover/skycrane along as part of cargo starships. Rovers could be landed across the entire surface and then the JPL landing coding could help them get to places

My point was that we will (soon) have the ability to get geologists on the surface. They can hammer out rocks and soil samples and bring them back to a lab where they can use all the tools a rover has, but better. Rovers are built with mass in mind and thus have bare-bone science equipment. For example perseverance has a raman spectrometer, mass spectrometer, etc. but they are very very fundamental. Elon is an idiot, a true moron in ever sense of the word. The reusable rocket technology SpaceX spent years developing is self defeating because its more efficent to use a expandable rather than a reusable Falcon 9 on a pro-rated basis. $62 Million for 22,800kg into LEO with an expendable F9 means a price of $2720/kg. $50 Million for 15,600kg into LEO with a reusable F9 means a price of $2720/kg. You are literally spending almost $500 MORE per kilogram going reusable, it would be cheaper for SpaceX to fly the F9 expendable from now on and it would have been better if they never fell for the re-usability meme at all.

>"B-B-B-B-BUT RESUABILITY MEANS SAVING MONEY"
Not if the ammount per launch saved it offset by a reduction in payload capacity, sure a reusable F9 costs 20% less than expendable, but also has 32% reduction payload capacity. It gets even worse with the Falcon Heavy. Which can put 63,400 kg into LEO when Expandable for 150 million, as opposed 28,400 when reused for 90 Million, $2350/kg vs $3630/kg respectively a difference of over $1000/kg.
Why is musk considered a genius again? Is paying more per Kilogram to LEO, using rockets in thier inferior configuration, some big brained idea that only SpaceX could have pulled off?
Let's face it, re-usability is a meme. You all fell for it because the heckin' Muskerino convinced you it was smart and that you were smart for believing him, using his only real talent marketing.

>inb4 "Shill"
>inb4 "Thunderfag pls go"
>inb4 "So how much is ULA/Blue Origin/Roscosmos/ect paying you?"
>inb4 "Who at SpaceX hurt you?"
>inb4 some other irrelevant lockument
Don't even bother to copepost, there's no getting around the fact that SpaceX is welfare leech no different than a sheboon and her 5 nigglets fathered by 4 different men. SpaceX making up their losses on commercial flights with largess from the government isn't innovative. Its just Musk stealing another idea from many who proceeded him, and pretending that its his own.

No one knows. I’ve seen speculation that it’s because the booster lost control and started to turn and ended up breaking apart because of the forces. It’s also been noted that there’s a possibility of an engine eating itself on shutdown and spewing bits of debris out. One thing is certain though, and it’s that if SpaceX wants to keep testing reusability, they’ll have to take it easier on the cores. At least Superheavy does RTLS-only

The good thing about SN9 is that everything up until relight worked the same as SN8, so I feel more comfortable about that phase of the flight now. I'm a bit worried about an engine failure on ascent though, since it's weird that they've had so many problems otherwise but have performed so reliably with that. Also, there are still ways that it could land hard or tip over even if the engines work on landing.

That WISPR can do this comes as a complete surprise to the Parker team, according to Angelos Vourlidas, the WISPR project scientist from the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). This device is “tailored and tested for visible light observations,” said Vourlidas in the NASA statement, saying they “expected to see clouds, but the camera peered right through to the surface.”

“WISPR effectively captured the thermal emission of the Venusian surface,” added Brian Wood, an astrophysicist and WISPR team member from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, in the NASA release.

WISPR, it would seem, has an unexpected capacity, namely the ability to detect near-infrared wavelengths of light. If confirmed, NASA says this could alter the scope of the missions to include investigations of dust around the Sun and also within the inner solar system.

We expected to see clouds, but the camera peered right through to the surface.”

The Apollo lunar module costs $380 milllion in today’s dollars. It could put 5 tons into the surface of the moon when deployed from low lunar orbit. The descent stage masses 10 tons so the whole thing was about 15 tons.

If you use Methalox or Hydrolox on the descent stage instead you get about 1 km/s extra delta v, which would allow you to land on the moon from a trans lunar injection.

The vehicle has a mass of 15 tons so it can be launched straight to the moon using an expendable Falcon heavy. FH expendable costs $150 Million plus $400 Million for our upgraded lander and that means you can put 5 tons into the lunar surface for $550 million. For reference, a Delta IV Heavy costs $350 million per launch

A significant chunk of that money, $100 million, would be required to pay for four test engines and a spare. These costs apparently did not include reactivation of the special test stands that had been used for the F-1.“
>”The per-unit cost for a production engine was difficult to estimate, however, because it depended upon the quantity ordered and the production rate. Rocketdyne estimated that the cost of each engine would be $15 million, assuming an order of 40 or more engines at a rate of 10–12 a year. But with the Space Exploration Initiative dead, further study of restarting F-1 engine production ceased.“

Sedimentary rock. You see how the small bluff looks like its got layers? You ONLY get that with silt settling out of running water. You see structures like that all over the place in Utah's desert areas.
That lump of rock alone proves there was a significant amount of water on Mars at one point.

https://spacenews.com/book-excerpt-liftoff-elon-musk-and-the-desperate-early-days-that-launched-spacex/
>Musk traveled to his South Texas rocket factory in mid-September 2019 to track progress of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle, the culmination of nearly two decades of effort to move humans from Earth to Mars. Weeks earlier, Starhopper soared into the clear skies above the coastal scrubland, located just this side of the Mexico border. And then, it very nearly crashed. Luckily, the Federal Aviation Administration had restricted the flight’s maximum altitude to five hundred feet, so when engineers lost control during Starhopper’s descent its landing legs merely crushed through the pad’s steel-reinforced concrete, rather than erupting into a ball of flame. Musk laughed at this thought. For much of SpaceX’s lifetime he has fought against regulators, always seeking to go faster, to push higher. “This time,” he quipped, “the FAA saved us.”

Idk how much patience you guys have but we could slowly psypop them into loving a new meme. Pic related. It's very reddit, I say we capitalize on the bird meme. It's already kind of there and "burb" is very reddit. We could also post it with soi/elon titles like "Hahah I hope the birds allow SN10 to land! /s"
The trick is getting something unmistakably /sfg/ in there. I put 'esseffgee' because it isn't too obvious and won't bring in tourists. But we would need to add essefgee to a bunch of memes slowly over time so it picks up traction

With that configuration you would have to heat the entire cable to stop it locking up in the ice.
The best way to do it would be to leave nothing on the surface but an antenna and the entire probe melts its way down using a nuclear heat source. Since the cable spool is on the probe, it stays warm and free to move. Once the probe hits the underside of the ice it stays there and uses an umbilicalled drone to explore.

it's a big list and when you post it goes to the top of the list, unless the rules say it can't (you post "sage" in the options field or the thread is in autosage)
new threads automatically go to the top of the list, and anything that gets pushed off the bottom of the list by a new thread is archived (they used to be just deleted)

Yes the entire thin cable would have to be heated, or the cable would have to be spooled in the probe itself not sure which would consume less heat, sink easier. If the entire lander would be also the heat probe it maybe couldnt produce enough heat to sink. The reactors the take with them are only 150w

Bro’s I’ve been thinking about Starship Classifications
>MK1 Class: Only two prototypes made (MK1, MK2). MK1 failed during testing and MK2 was scrapped
>SN1 Class: A one off vehicle. Failed during testing.
>SN2 Class: A specialized test tank never intended for flight. Only one was made. Currently retired.
>SN3 Class: A one off vehicle. Only one in its class (SN3). Was destroyed during testing.
>SN4 Class: The first flight worthy Starships. 3 were made in the class (SN4, SN5, SN6). SN4 was destroyed during testing. SN5 and SN6 completed flights but ended up being scrapped.
>SN8 class: The final Starship to use heavy amounts of 301L steel. Only one prototype was made (SN8). SN8 was destroyed at the end of its test flight.
>SN8 Refit: Three prototypes were made (SN9, SN10, SN11). Used SN8 design but with heavy majority 304 steel instead. SN9 was destroyed at the end of its test flight.

Alright it's time I ask for someone to explain this to me. My brother originally showed me 4chan circa 2012 or something? And he told me to sort my catalog by reply count, which is what I do. I assume most other people don't. How does the catalog work normally? Tbh in 8 years I still have no clue how bumps work, but I assume the regular catalog sorting pushes /sfg/ on people as it is first created? (which would explain why pages 1-3 are usually shitty?)

We really need Cassini style missions to Uranus and Neptune. They should both launch around the same time. The Neptune orbiter will arrive roughly around the end of the lifespan of the Uranus orbiter, it'd line up nicely.
And isn't there a launch window in only a bit more than ten years or so, at least for one of them? They should really start working on it now so I may live to see nice pictures of Uranus.

When somebody posts in a thread, it gets bumped to the top of the board. Threads are displayed in order of when they were most recently bumped. The threads on top are on page 1.

After a while, the thread reaches the bump limit, which means that it keeps going further down until it reaches the end of page 10, at which point it is deleted.

A fellow newfag, here's how I understand it: when we got here, we got used to using the catalog view, but most people who used the website before used the paged view where they just see the top threads and then justify what was recently posted as being active. This way you get a constant influx of new things as they hop around the pages until they hit page 10/bump limit and are marked for destruction soon. Real interesting because I am used to sorting by the catalog like that too, so the page number never really mattered besides to point out how popular a thread is.
