I'm with Gwynne Shotwell on the the future of small satellite launchers, most of them won't survive and the ones that do will live off government contracts. Space tugs will service the niche orbits and take most of the commercial customers away from them. Yes he is, had Cassini exploded or failed to enter orbit the effects would have been pretty bad. RTG's scattering across the globe isn't ideal. But we shouldn't let the fear of muh radioactive matter keep us back from exploring. I'll admit I don't know the full story. Maybe Kaku was just saying "hey maybe this COULD happen so we should just be careful." Or maybe he was saying "CANCEL THIS MISSION NOW". But either way, we shouldn't hold ourselves back because of possible ramifications. We should be fucking zipping across the solar system on Orion pulse propulsion rockets and trading between planets; not arguing about the gender of Mr. Potato head and fearing the atom

I think total program costs were projected to be like 6-8 billion, so a lot, but then again it's going to fly a lot too. It's not like there's going to be lingering project cost or something though, so far as I'd heard NASA's original contracts helped it start up and it's being fueled now by Elon's personal wealth.
If we divide 8 billion by the 200k each ticket would cost, and assume 25 people per ship, it would take 1600 Starship launches to pay for the whole project. Double the crew to 50, which is about as many as I could realistically see living in a 1000^m3 tube for 4-6 months, and you'd need only 800 launches.
Basically, the first major colonization push involving 1000 ships will probably pay for most of the entire project on it's own, assuming that it's run as a for-profit endeavor. He can also obviously charge the government 30-50 million a shot and keep almost all of that as profit due to the nature of the vehicle, still outcompeting all other superheavy lift rockets.

Good poll actually. There's a lot that can go wrong with a rocket launch. I think lots of people here on /sfg/, as well as reddit and twitter, will expect something to go wrong on the way up (explosion) or on the way down (failed landing). But I think people don't take into account the fact that second stages often fail a LOT with early aerospace companies. I think the maiden flight will see a successfull first-stage landing (albeit it will be a hard landing and they will almost lose the booster) and something will fuck up with the second stage. Answering this anons question from the old bread.
It either ices over and you accept some evaporative losses everytime you go through. The ice wouldn't be too thick but you have to crack it to get through.
The other alternative is putting a thin layer of vacuum stable oil on the top, doesn't need to be thick at all to stop evaporation. It will stop ice forming but you might get a bit of oil on your machines/suits.
All a trade off, whatever method you want the entrance to be covered with unpressurised doors to stop wind and sun.

Let's be honest here. Above ground structures are a luxury thing until we've our needs filled.

Needs & wants. Our government wants above ground structures for a glorified flag planting mission.

Underground structures means that you don't need to ship in build materials other than tunnel reinforcement stuff.

Once you have a tunnel individuals & pairs would pay for an apartment to be build into the side of a tunnel.

That instantly jump starts an economy as people would pay for an apartment to be built 2 years ahead of them going to Mars.

That's just living spaces. With underground structures you quarry out stone to build liquid holding tanks for sewage treatment and storage of millions of gallons of water, which means long hot showers.

it also means we can pump methane & other chemicals into the ground like the strategic oil reserve.

Industrial equipment gets to stay out of the elements, and you could build underground rocket test stands in sealed off halls.

I really liked that video thanks for sharing. I got some comment and questions though because I’m a bit confused.
1) What is Hercules? Is it a stand-in for Starship?
2) Damn that thing is big. I find it hard to believe we’d build something like that until we already have a bunch of stuff on Mars’ surface anyways.
3) The design is great. It looks cool and is functional too.
4) Why are the habs so far apart from each other? Wouldn’t you want them to be connected by tunnels or something?
5) I like the design but I hope they’d eventually have versions just for habitation or storage and whatnot one day. I get why there’s different rooms but the entire time I was thinking “man you can put like 100 people in there”

With printing it wouldn't be very tough
3) The design is great. It looks cool and is functional too.
I think so too.
4) Why are the habs so far apart from each other? Wouldn’t you want them to be connected by tunnels or something?
Most likely yes but that is probably for the aesthetic as it was for a competition.
5) I like the design but I hope they’d eventually have versions just for habitation or storage and whatnot one day. I get why there’s different rooms but the entire time I was thinking “man you can put like 100 people in there”

You don't have to dig in a lava tube. They are already massive. You don't have to pressurise this shit either, that's way too risky and costly, bring some inflatable habs and shove em inside.
Airlocks are the exact same problem whether above ground or not. It will end up being a tough engineering challenge regardless to keep out perchlorates.

again a 6 month stint is nothing. You are very used to sun and I don't think you understand what real long term lack of sun is like. Especially if you add the lack of ambient light and claustrophobia of a lavatube.

It would be wise to have several starships soley dedicated to being hospital ships with some being specialized for certain tasks and carry heavy medical machinery such as MRI and CT scanners. A good example is Antarctica where each station has its own doctor and medical facilities.

>Propane at room temperature is a non-starter for pump fed engines, as
its vapor pressure is too high for light weight tanks. Propane is
unusual in that it will not freeze solid if put in tanks in thermal contact with LOX tanks; it has been proposed therefore to use sub-cooled
propane. Calculations done here show both propane at its normal boiling
point, and at 100 K, about 10 K above LOX temperature. Sub-cooled
propane (at LOX temperatures or slightly above to account for imperfect
chilling of propane by adjacent LOX tanks) is a winner, with a bulk density nearly the same as that of RP-1, and a superior Isp.

Honestly, I was seriously considering how easy it should be to make something like this nowadays. There's a bunch of shitty university cubesats being launched nowadays, all that it takes it for one to have an actual computer and not just a shitty microcontroller for you to be able to take it over. I know some missions that have this, however their security is usually high for communication requirements. I want to write up a report on how much it would cost to launch your own private tracker/p2p file sharing server that you could talk to with UHF or something. Just the bare minimum to make it off-world and untouchable by some government agencies. I think that it is still much too expensive for pirates, but it should definitely be possible in a few years.
