Basically all the cool shit that gets immediately weathered/dissolved/eroded on Earth will just happily sit there for billions of years on Mars. Shit like volcanic minerals that have 20%, 50%, 80% sodium chloride content which are extruded as magma and solidify as they cool will be perfectly stable on Mars, whereas on Earth they would exist until the next rain storm, and even just sitting there they would be disturbed by absorption of humidity from the air.

Yeah to really have a general understanding of the processes that occur inside a given non-stellar celestial body you need an understanding of nuclear decay, chemistry in a range of environments going from vacuum to gigapascales and near absolute zero to over 20,000 celsius, the chemical processes that are changed by a difference in elemental concentration from a few tenths of a percent to entirely different, 100% substituted minerology, etc etc. Plus you need to understand gravitational tidal interactions, hypervelocity impacts, the stellar lifecycle and how stellar remnants work, etc.
"Knowing" geology well enough to make 90% accurate predictions about the interior of Enceladus or whatever is pretty much the same thing as "knowing" engineering well enough to be able to be able to invent a new machine by yourself that does 90% of what you want it to be able to do, just given a couple of broad features (ie, I want a FFSC engine that achieves high TWR and high manufacturability).

Alright SFG pick your poison. I had fun writing this last thread so I’ll do it again.
OPTION A
>You are a low paid welder working for SpaceX in Boca Chica. You get to build Starships with your team and you can proudly say that you actually got to be hands on with a spaceship. Who else can say that?
>However, if SpaceX changes their weld technique, you’re out of a job. You are also a single father, and if you lose your job, your child will have to go to a crappy public school.
>Also, because you are spending so much money on your child’s education, you will never be able to afford a ride to space in your lifetime.
OPTION B
>You are an engineer working on the SLS at Boeing. Your job pays very well - upwards of $150K a year. You enjoy your co workers and your work environment. However, you work for an OldSpace company. Also, even though you dislike SLS, you know that if it is cancelled, you will be out of a job.
>Back home you have a qt wife and several children. Your wife doesn’t work and you live in a higher-income neighborhood. If you lost your job at Boeing (and all of its income) your family would have to move.
>Also you have a heart condition and you will never fly in space, no matter how much money you save.
OPTION C
>You are a millionaire who is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. You have $60 million at your disposal, so you decide to book a ride on Crew Dragon to the ISS. The mission will last a week, and you’ll even be able to operate machinery on the ISS.
>However, your brain tumor has given you a little over a year to live. Worse, the stresses from re-entry will kill you, making any voyage to space a one-way trip.
>You have no family on Earth. No wife, no kids, no nothing. When you die, you’ll fade away into a memory.

The first black astronaut was based too had he died during training
>https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Henry_Lawrence_Jr..

When asked if his selection was historic for race relations in the United States, Lawrence answered "No, I don't think so. It's another one of those things that we look forward to in civil rights — normal progression." He said that he had faced problems like other blacks, but "Perhaps I have been more fortunate than the others in the opportunities." Donald H. Peterson, chosen for MOL with Lawrence, said "I can't speak for all the people in Mississippi" but that he was not reluctant to work with a black man.”

>”The airplane struck the ground hard, its main gear failed, it caught fire, and rolled. The canopy shattered and the plane bounced and skidded on the runway for 2,000 feet (610 m). Major Royer ejected upward and survived, with major injuries. The back seat, which delays a moment to avoid hitting the front seat, ejected sideways, killing Lawrence instantly. He was still strapped to his ejector seat; his parachute failed to open and was dragged 75 feet (23 m) from the wreck.”

>We must know the tactics our enemies will use against us so we may get in front of them.
This is a defensive posture, which in the current environment is largely ineffective. Offense is the way to go, either by spearheading narratives or redirecting anti-space ones. Bonus point if you get to call these people racist, for both ironic and practical reasons.
And by the way, the best way to move past this woke shit is to weaponize it against the powerful. The moment the ruling class becomes inconvenienced it'll disappear.

A quick and dirty example using starlink: reference starlink as a means to help impoverished and minority groups (true). Then paint those against starlink as being against it because they hate minorities and don't want them to access the internet (probably false but it's not like these people care about truth so w/e). Or say that they value their billion-dollar white man telescopes more than bringing these communities up to speed.

You don't go to Mars on a fucking SLS. You need a nuclear ship with a lander attached. It has to be nuclear becuse you need lots of dV to make the shortest return trip possible (alternative: cram supplies for a couple years in the ship and then wait for a cheaper transfer window).
So you get to Mars orbit and you park your ship by doing an orbit insertion burn. Then your lander doesn't need to carry a thermal shield at all for the descent because it won't be reentering at solar orbital speeds.

It's your friendly neighbourhood Mars terraforming back-of-the-cumrag-calculation anon here. This time with a bit of thermodynamics for you. Last time I determined that the Martian poles contain more than enough water to supply a 0.2 bar pure oxygen atmosphere. This time I decided to figure out just how much energy it would "ideally" take to dumbly electrolyse all that water to liberate 0.2 bars worth of oxygen. Looks like you're going to need a lot of Kilopowers.

the nice thing about terraforming is that it would never work without high yield fusion, so at least it adds a forcing function to achieve it. same goes for fusion drives, really no need, until you wanna bring that mars transfer time down

http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/realdesigns2.php#orionbattleship
> When the Orion nuclear pulse propulsion concept was being developed, the researchers at General Atomic were interested in an interplanetary research vessel. But the US Air Force was not. They thought the 4,000 ton version of the Orion would be rightsized for an interplanetary warship, armed to the teeth. And when they said armed, they meant ARMED. It had enough nuclear bombs to devastate an entire continent (500 twenty-megaton city-killer warheads), 5-inch Naval cannon turrets, six hypersonic landing boats, and several hundred of the dreaded Casaba Howitzer weapons — which are basically ray guns that shoot nuclear flame (the technical term is "nuclear shaped charge").

While I cannot really comment on climate engineering (Though how hard could this be? Just add a bunch of atmospheric CFCs so you can get a nice greenhouse effect going), Mars has sufficient water reserves in its poles alone to maintain a significant human presence. Presuming you have made a 0.2 bar oxygen atmosphere using polar water you will still have ~75% of the mass of the polar water remaining which would be about 2.412E18 kg. An average human requires 3.5 L per day, which doesn't disappear after they've consumed it and can be recycled post consumption. This means that presuming perfect recycling you can meet the water requirements of ~6.89E17 Martian humans. So local Martian water sources are more than sufficient to maintain an appreciable human population. Warming the planet is the main problem after generating a sufficiently dense atmosphere - but I haven't done any calculations for that.

This is a moronic take because it presumes that CO2 is the only greenhouse gas. There are a multitude of other known compounds like CFCs and HFCs with far greater heating potential than CO2. This paper states that CHF3 has a warming potential 11,700 times greater than CO2 https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022113912001315.. And I'm sure nothing really stops us from engineering even more potent greenhouse gases that might only need to be present at the 1000s to 10,000s ppm levels in a hypothetical 0.2 bar Oxygen Mars atmosphere.

Actually since Mars is basically a vacuum any surface missions there will be more concerned with finding better ways of throwing away waste heat than generating heat to keep the habitats warm. The pressure at ground level across most of Mars is akin to the pressure of gas in the space between the walls of a thermos that keeps coffee hot for hours. Start adding gas to Mars and you'll actually increase the heating requirements for habitats across the board, even though the atmosphere will technically be warming up, it's ability to sap heat out of objects warmer than the air will increase faster.
This is actually a big issue for Titan probes because they need to be well insulated to keep their batteries warm, and will likely need supplementary heating from small radiothermal sources. Trying to keep a habitat warm on Titan will be a nightmare.

The joke is that you need to solve the launch mass problem in order to take a planet apart, since doing the latter is basically just doing the former but on a scale a trillion times larger.

I like to think there's a race out there who's home planet is a super earth that serves as a HUGE gravity well. Their "gagarin" equivalent was probably an orion fission rocket just to get to LEO. They would probably look at us and scorn. "you guys have it so easy yet you waste it on politics. Fags. We will glass your planet out of mercy"

>> No.12740577

A hill sphere is the region of space in which an object's gravity dominates. Earth's hill sphere is a little one embedded within the much larger hill sphere of the Sun, and the Moon's hill sphere is an even smaller one embedded within the hill sphere of the Earth. The sun's hill sphere is embedded within the hill sphere of the Milky Way, and Proxima's hill sphere is the closest other one belonging to a star. There's a point out in space between Sol and Proxima where you could move a """Short""" distance and change hill sphere between Proxima and Sol, kind of like jumping between the borders of two countries.
