Tesla is the most valuable car manufacturer in the world (at least before the recent pullback, can't be bothered to check now but you get the point) despite making less than 1% of the world's cars. In terms of cash flows, Tesla only makes money on selling tax credits to other companies, which is basically just leeching off a regulatory quirk. There's no defense for the current valuation. Don't come at me saying Tesla is going to suddenly break out into a new vertical and make tons of money, that's horse shit for explaining the current price.

That said, Tesla is more a product of the economy as it has been run since the 2008 crisis. Perpetually low rates make it possible to roll debt forward forever. Money-losing tech companies with huge valuations are normal now. I do wonder though if they've hit the thin edge of diminishing returns. GPT-3 cost a few mil to do the final training run, not counting R&D, personnel, infra and other overhead. Take their DOTA models for example. Initially very strong performance. However, after about a month of being open for public play, people found a strategy to consistently beat the model.
