Interestingly enough, in 1994 a letter was published on the topic of race realism. The letter basically said "race is real and it's mainstream science, please sign here if you agree". It was sent to 115 researchers, 100 of which responded.
Of 100, 52 of them signed it. While that's only half, the reasons why vary. Only 11 explicitly disagreed, 11 was unsure, and the rest didn't sign but also didn't disagree (Most of the last category were afraid of jeopardizing their careers).
So in a way, it IS mainstream science, just mainstream science you're not allowed to talk about.
