Great potatoberg released this ad. IMHO it falls into the Starship troopers category of 'intended satire but unintentionally cool as fuck', if only they'd left out the last 3 seconds of muh climate change. fuck earf.

Wouldn't any city sized or larger O'Neill cylinder have constant fog at ground level?
>need enough water to keep the plants alive for CO2 scrubbing and food production, which implies a reasonable humidity level
>water vapor is heavier than air
>heavier gases get driven out to the edge of the torus by centrifugal force
>centrifugal force plus evaporation means highest density of water vapor is right at ground level

Water is literally a lighter-than-air vapor, anon. Not even by just a little bit either.

>> No.12720067

>>12720058
Fog is made of condensation. It's tiny droplets of liquid water, which are many times more dense than air, but so small that they remain suspended through the brownian motion of gas particles. When the sun hits fog it begins to rise because the droplets begin to vaporize again and create a layer of lower density gas mixture which floats on dry air.
Clouds happen when warmer surface temperatures prevent the condensation of water, allowing the water vapor to rise much higher before expanding and cooling enough to form droplets. Clouds themselves are a transient thing, and can only persist for as long as the plume of water vapor rising underneath continues feeding them. Otherwise clouds eventually warm up in the sun and all that water re-evaporates.

Guys how much effort to move Phobos and Deimos both to Mars-synchronous orbit and mash them together into one slightly bigger moon which will remain in a permanently stable orbit?
Can we use plasma magnet sails close to Mars since there's no magnetosphere? Could we use sequential tugs via a magnet sail to give little delta Vs to the moons over many years?

Irradiation and contamination are not the same thing. You can blast an apple with 100 sieverts of beta radiation and eat it like any other apple. However if you contaminate that apple with a microgram of polonium-210 you're gonna get a severe internal dose to your bone marrow and soft tissues. Likewise if you contaminate the soil and ice on Mars with fission products and activation products (from the neutron flux) you're going to make it annoying to avoid pulling radioactive shit into your habitats.

This whole "1%" is the most retarded shit ever. They got any idea what 1% of the population entails? And if it's meant to address exclusively some of the richest people, it ignores the overwhelming fact that life on any other celestial body would be extremely tough and without one hundredth of the benefits available here. It is meant exclusively to spark outrage, trying to point a finger to people interested in space program developments and accusing them of promoting a quite literally impossible "escape" from an ever changing planet that is not going to magically burst up in flames in 10 years. radio wave propagation spreads out exponentially the further away you get from an object. The same transmitting power that we used to send images back from the moon would never be able to send images back from mars. in fact it's not really "telemetry", it's an integration probably taken from JPL Horizons. Now, to know what a visualization does with that... depends on how it is programmed. My guess is that it will simply disappear. Programming the surface threshold is trivial. (or simply giving the data up to a point)

Space elevators become useless for celestial objects at some point between Moon and Mars mass. Even if Mars only had one moon and it was basically a carbonaceous asteroid perfect for making carbon nanotubes out of, it would still not make economic sense to build a space elevator for Mars transport.
That being said, space elevators do actually become viable for moon-sized objects, even ones that spin slowly so long as they orbit a larger body, and for very tiny objects like Ceres they are fucking amazing. In an autistic fit a few threads ago I showed that in the same amount of time it would take a Starship to fully refuel and launch a maximum payload to Ceres orbit (13,000 tons), a space elevator on Ceres could lift over a million tons of material into Ceres-stationary orbit. It would also be perfectly fine to build such an elevator out of regular old steel, aluminum would be overkill in terms of strength to mass ratio, and at just 1000 km long sitting in a maximum of 0.03% of Earth gravity, climbing the cable up and back down would only take 48 hours total even with a load of 500,000 kilograms.

A lot more than we currently have. The solution is to set up an array of communication satellites (not anything crazy, maybe 6 maximum for now) which have the big beefy dishes and solar arrays needed to achieve that kind of bandwidth across interplanetary distances, then just have the probes and stuff transmit to those satellites. That way the stuff doing the flying only needs a reasonably amount of antenna power and we can get actual half-decent video (with much higher framerate and higher res video being dumped into storage for relaying afterwards).

Well, more like probe -> Communication satellite -> Earth based receiver.

The only reason you need multiple communication satellites is to guarantee that you always have line-of-sight to at least one of them at all times. At any one time though all of the data would be passing through one satellite on its way to Earth. In the worst case scenario, the probe would talk to a satellite, which would relay the data to one of the other satellites surrounding Mars in the event that Mars was blocking the line of sight to Earth, and then this second communication satellite would beam the data at Earth from there.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I like this description from 2001

>but one tanker rolled on the peculiar flex-wheels which had proved one of the best all-purpose ways of getting around on the Moon. A series of flat plates arranged in a circle, each plate independently mounted and sprung, the flex-wheel had many of the advantages of the caterpillar track from which it had evolved. It would adapt its shape and diameter to the terrain over which it was moving, and, unlike a caterpillar track, would continue to function even if a few sections were missing.

RTG is better than solar in that it can work during the nighttime and doesn't get covered by dust, which is a huge issue with mars landers and rovers. It also can function independent of sunlight, which is important to outer planetary missions. RTG is worse than solar in that you can't really scale it up very well. The best RTG's we've made only make like 300 watts of power while your average geostationary comms satellite makes like 10-100X that. Anyhow RTGs are also pretty damn expensive which is why Europa Clipper uses solar panels instead. RTGs and Solar are both potentially long-lasting in terms of longevity. All in all I'd say that RTGs and Solar both have pros and cons. RTGs are expensive and make less power but are far more robust.
