Nigger
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cKha3N7K7Hw&feature=emb_titleGreat potatoberg released this ad. IMHO it falls into the Starship troopers category of 'intended satire but unintentionally cool as fuck', if only they'd left out the last 3 seconds of muh climate change. fuck earf.>will you be a pioneer?>would you like to know more?
>>12719707Don't say bad words.
(12719707)First for ULA ruining sfg threads?
>>12719711Doesn't really matter, the satire of starship troopers unironically made fascism look good.Wondering where they got all those landscape backgrounds though. Is there 3D mapping out there or did they just make it up.

Yeah bro like Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos are going to leave their gorillion dollar superyacht, teenager fucking lifestyle on earth to go live in a pod on Mars?Do these imbeciles have any idea of the scales of economics and infrastructure development it would require on Mars for these Jews to have that same lifestyle on an airless radioactive desert shithole?
>>12719743Colonizing Mars is going to be fucking hell, but a hell I welcome over the hell I have on this planet.
>>12719746Me too my man.
>>12719743It's hilarious the angle they try to play on it. I don't think they are that stupid when writing it they just know their audience is dumb enough to believe it's a class war thing.
>>12719746It’ll be cozy in its own way. Do you think it would be better to find a tradwife before blasting off to the red planet? Or should you wait until you get there? I doubt there will be too many single cuties going there until it turns into a self-sufficient vacation city in 100 years
>>12719760Tradwives come included with the deal.
>>12719760>"tradwife"Not gonna make it.
Wouldn't any city sized or larger O'Neill cylinder have constant fog at ground level?>need enough water to keep the plants alive for CO2 scrubbing and food production, which implies a reasonable humidity level>water vapor is heavier than air>heavier gases get driven out to the edge of the torus by centrifugal force>centrifugal force plus evaporation means highest density of water vapor is right at ground level
>>12719760You won't find a women willing to leave urf and go to Mars with you, well maybe one in several million but good luck with that. Mars is going to have a serious female shortage. Hopefully we can just cut straight to artificial wombs and robowives.

>>12719803>which is why clouds are up in the skyWhat about fog?Checkmate.
>>12719768Water is literally a lighter-than-air vapor, anon. Not even by just a little bit either.
>>12720058Fog is made of condensation. It's tiny droplets of liquid water, which are many times more dense than air, but so small that they remain suspended through the brownian motion of gas particles. When the sun hits fog it begins to rise because the droplets begin to vaporize again and create a layer of lower density gas mixture which floats on dry air. Clouds happen when warmer surface temperatures prevent the condensation of water, allowing the water vapor to rise much higher before expanding and cooling enough to form droplets. Clouds themselves are a transient thing, and can only persist for as long as the plume of water vapor rising underneath continues feeding them. Otherwise clouds eventually warm up in the sun and all that water re-evaporates.

>>12720384Its gonna crash in like 100k years or so and utterly fuck up the whole planet. Any Mars colony is going to have to find a way to deal with that shit eventually, although it's still a massive time frame from human perspective.Best idea I've heard is using Phobos as a massive orbital/spin tether that can yeet ships either into the inner system or out to the outer system.

>>12720447i can take a 10fps 7 minute delay feed
>>12720082>>12720089this landing will prove or disprove the viability of the skycrane. If Percy lands safely that will point to the maneuver being reliable and it may just become the default way of landing rovers on the planet.
>>12720451Would still take a monumental level of comm infrastructure and power to achieve that from Mars.
>>12720384>>12720407Phobos is where we are going to develop capabilities like microgravity industry and asteroid mining. It's in an ideal location for this. It will also be a hugely valuable stockpile of resources for extraction and refining into products like enormous spacecraft and habitats.
>>12720089There is one major difference. It will take photos of the Mars ground and compare it to previously taken orbital imagery to narrow down the safest landing spot and maneuver to that location before final touchdown. Per JPL update yesterday.
>>12720455will it do all that on its own?
>>12720443Yes it would do that. In fact it would be broken up by tidal forces before reaching the planet even if if were a monolithic chunk of rock today.

>>12720470>>inb4 SpaceX develops reusable Mars skycraneFor something like that, I think Zubrin's ISRU NTR hopper/shuttle would be the best.>but what about irradiating mars and its atmospherenigga, who cares
Guys how much effort to move Phobos and Deimos both to Mars-synchronous orbit and mash them together into one slightly bigger moon which will remain in a permanently stable orbit? Can we use plasma magnet sails close to Mars since there's no magnetosphere? Could we use sequential tugs via a magnet sail to give little delta Vs to the moons over many years?
>>12720483Would it be a good idea to irradiate the spot you're skycraning buildings down on? My gut says 'no' but I've been wrong before.
>>12720470Why would you need a skycrane at all when you can just put hundreds of tons on the surface normally? Skycranes are just a way to cope with mass restriction.
>>12720483>but what about irradiating mars and its atmosphere>nigga, who caresIrradiation and contamination are not the same thing. You can blast an apple with 100 sieverts of beta radiation and eat it like any other apple. However if you contaminate that apple with a microgram of polonium-210 you're gonna get a severe internal dose to your bone marrow and soft tissues. Likewise if you contaminate the soil and ice on Mars with fission products and activation products (from the neutron flux) you're going to make it annoying to avoid pulling radioactive shit into your habitats.
>>12720108maybe because the video never says that bezos and musk are going to live on mars themselves? and that hardly matters anyways, even if the 1% poorest people go most people are still fucked on earth. the video isn't saying colonizing mars is bad, it's just saying it's no replacement for taking care of earth, why can't none of you retards understand that
>>12720501see >>12720506Irradiation is fine. Contamination is not. The NSWR spews shitloads of contamination so it's pretty "meh" for launch or landing on objects you plan on mining anything out of.
>>12720507The video description literally says that the world's richest and most influential people are "laser focused" on Mars and not doing anything for Earth. Meanwhile Elon is probably the single most influential person right now in terms of actually doing shit about getting away from fossil fuels.
>>12720507>why can't none of you retards understand thatWhy can't you understand that painting Mars and space in general as something for the rich to use to escape is going to make people hate the very idea of it and try to shut it down?
>>12720521>and not doing anything for earthso you just can't read then
>>12720523going to mars is neat for scientific discoveries, to push the boundaries of humanity and all, i still think it's dope, i'm just not deluded into thinking it'll solve all our problems on earth
>>12720507This whole "1%" is the most retarded shit ever. They got any idea what 1% of the population entails? And if it's meant to address exclusively some of the richest people, it ignores the overwhelming fact that life on any other celestial body would be extremely tough and without one hundredth of the benefits available here. It is meant exclusively to spark outrage, trying to point a finger to people interested in space program developments and accusing them of promoting a quite literally impossible "escape" from an ever changing planet that is not going to magically burst up in flames in 10 years. Well, subterranean methane pockets bursting aside, but that's not happening either.
Reminder that all defence of anti-space propaganda is low quality bait.
>>12720525IT'S WHAT THE VIDEO SAYS
>>12720533and yet many here spend their days making plans for how they want the mars colony they'll definitely be a part of to be like
>>12720533>Well, subterranean methane pockets bursting aside, but that's not happening either.quite the contrary!
>>12720537you don't have to scream just because you're deaf
>>12720506>>12720513Zubrin's mars hopper isn't a NSWR, it's just a NERVA-type solid core reactor that uses an air compressor to turn mars atmosphere into liquid CO2 for reaction mass.
>>12720539Yes.
sneed
>>12720540Not that soon, I meant to say. Certainly not within anyone's of us lifespans. Right?
>>12720539>he said, as if the Mars colonization efforts will not be heavily reliant on R&D work performed on Earth
>>12720546make me sneed, daddy
>>12720544Correct, I know. But the other anon said NSWR so I ran with that. That being said a nuclear thermal rocket does have some implications for activating the surrounding soil through neutron flux and activating the vehicle components as well, though this risk is comparatively small due to the much lower neutron flux in a solid core reactor vs an open cycle continuous supercriticality fission torch.
>>12720550can't wait for nasa to build a memorial to anons for their great work on "maintaining colony morale using tradwives", "efficiently growing crops by enslaving space mexicans" and whatever the piss tunnel is about

>>12720580You've completely fallen for what the video is actually trying to do: It's masquerading as simply being against ignoring Earth while using that in an attempt to whip people up into a frenzy over spaceflight itself.

>>12720695Yep there's actually two sets of ballasts. The first set gets jettisoned before atmospheric entry to raise the craft's center of mass and create a lifting body out of the capsule. They will then jettison a second set of ballasts before parachute deploy to balance the craft back to normal
>>12720695>>12720701I forgot to mention this one also has two additional cubesat- style relay satellites it will jettison before atmospheric entry to try out new method of data communication. These two cubesats will briefly relay data from the rover to orbiting satellites before burning up

>>12720698radio wave propagation spreads out exponentially the further away you get from an object. The same transmitting power that we used to send images back from the moon would never be able to send images back from mars. It would take a retarded amount of power to broadcast video from mars back to earth. Infrastructure could be made so that its possible, but it would be a fucking monumental effort.
>>12720765in fact it's not really "telemetry", it's an integration probably taken from JPL Horizons. If you take a look at the data there you will see that it propagates the trajectory as if there was no surface (the periapse is around 80 km below the surface). So for a couple minutes, it continues the hyperbolic trajectory, away from mars
>>12720756Unexpected of him but nice, watching a few gulls get deep-fried on that barge would have been funny.
This site lets you view real time data downlink from space missions, including Perseverance (M20)https://eyes.nasa.gov/dsn/dsn.htmlThe various Mars orbiters will also send data towards Earth stations.
>>12720765>>12720784here is the data, which any sort of visualization like that is probably working with:8:38:00 PM 3519.932328:39:00 PM 3439.8594798:40:00 PM 3378.1388188:41:00 PM 3336.0329718:42:00 PM 3314.4620528:43:00 PM 3313.917018:44:00 PM 3334.4101738:45:00 PM 3375.4739228:46:00 PM 3436.207858:47:00 PM 3515.3639848:48:00 PM 3611.4527378:49:00 PM 3722.8512548:50:00 PM 3847.8996598:51:00 PM 3984.9769468:52:00 PM 4132.5541658:53:00 PM 4289.2267478:54:00 PM 4453.7299628:55:00 PM 4624.9420598:56:00 PM 4801.8792418:57:00 PM 4983.6857978:58:00 PM 5169.6218278:59:00 PM 5359.0501919:00:00 PM 5551.42373As you can see as it passes the periapse at around 8:43, it continues the trajectory. Now, to know what a visualization does with that... depends on how it is programmed. My guess is that it will simply disappear. Programming the surface threshold is trivial. (or simply giving the data up to a point)

>>12720645Space elevators become useless for celestial objects at some point between Moon and Mars mass. Even if Mars only had one moon and it was basically a carbonaceous asteroid perfect for making carbon nanotubes out of, it would still not make economic sense to build a space elevator for Mars transport. That being said, space elevators do actually become viable for moon-sized objects, even ones that spin slowly so long as they orbit a larger body, and for very tiny objects like Ceres they are fucking amazing. In an autistic fit a few threads ago I showed that in the same amount of time it would take a Starship to fully refuel and launch a maximum payload to Ceres orbit (13,000 tons), a space elevator on Ceres could lift over a million tons of material into Ceres-stationary orbit. It would also be perfectly fine to build such an elevator out of regular old steel, aluminum would be overkill in terms of strength to mass ratio, and at just 1000 km long sitting in a maximum of 0.03% of Earth gravity, climbing the cable up and back down would only take 48 hours total even with a load of 500,000 kilograms.

>>12720859A lot more than we currently have. The solution is to set up an array of communication satellites (not anything crazy, maybe 6 maximum for now) which have the big beefy dishes and solar arrays needed to achieve that kind of bandwidth across interplanetary distances, then just have the probes and stuff transmit to those satellites. That way the stuff doing the flying only needs a reasonably amount of antenna power and we can get actual half-decent video (with much higher framerate and higher res video being dumped into storage for relaying afterwards).

>>12721069>he didn't get a front-row seat on the roverlol
>>12721053Well, more like probe -> Communication satellite -> Earth based receiver. The only reason you need multiple communication satellites is to guarantee that you always have line-of-sight to at least one of them at all times. At any one time though all of the data would be passing through one satellite on its way to Earth. In the worst case scenario, the probe would talk to a satellite, which would relay the data to one of the other satellites surrounding Mars in the event that Mars was blocking the line of sight to Earth, and then this second communication satellite would beam the data at Earth from there.

>>12721617I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>>12724200RTG is better than solar in that it can work during the nighttime and doesn't get covered by dust, which is a huge issue with mars landers and rovers. It also can function independent of sunlight, which is important to outer planetary missions. RTG is worse than solar in that you can't really scale it up very well. The best RTG's we've made only make like 300 watts of power while your average geostationary comms satellite makes like 10-100X that. Anyhow RTGs are also pretty damn expensive which is why Europa Clipper uses solar panels instead. RTGs and Solar are both potentially long-lasting in terms of longevity. All in all I'd say that RTGs and Solar both have pros and cons. RTGs are expensive and make less power but are far more robust.
>>12723933This is right. Nasa should be dumping an apollos project worth of funding on nuclear salt water rockets. Let the private sector do launches
>>12724236image limit
>>12724236Image limit so I'm fine with it.
>>12724236>can't post images.It's annoying.
>>12724249in any sane world, once there became a market that realistically had commercial leo launches (which atm is just spacex but whatever) the entire budget should have been transferred to exploration.name another scientific organisation which designs and builds their own cars in order to drive the equipment to the place they want to observe.
>>12724268>>12724273>>12724288you have to go back
>>12724268>>12724273>>12724288patience is a virtue.>why must you destroy everything good about this place
>>12724288Yeah, how can we persevere without adding off-topic images to our shitposting. The horror.
>>12724215Die cunt
>>12724323>>12724348>>12724362Fuck you, don't post any images as long as you live
>>12724188>2.5kW>3 horsepowerWait, what? That's underwhelming. Percy needs at least 200 horsepower to do sick jumps off Jezero's rim.
>>12724323>>12724348>>12724360>image board>can't post imagesumm
>>12724382go to instagram or something no one fucking cares.
>>12721489Fuck man
>>12724200Pros:Simple operation, RTGs have few if any moving parts, constantly generate a reliably known quantity of power and do so under all circumstances, and they always generate some waste heat that is used to keep vital systems warm. Cons:Tiny production runs, enormously bad efficiency, abysmally low power generation ceiling, terrible mass/power ratio, dangerous weaponizable and expensive fuel.
>>12724382>he is not only so new but also so much of an unwashed swine that he has no idea not all boards allowed images in 4chan's historyDIAF
>>12724379>>12724382if you went back, you wouldn't have this """problem"""

>>12724402>>12724433>>12724443>perseverance sends images of fucking mars back>can't post it on /sfg/ for another 2h because some autists insist that a dead thread that hit an image limit has to reach page 10.
>>12724511The images were already posted. If you made a new thread when the new ones became available you'd have a case. Seriously, terminate your worthless existence post-haste.
>>12724511>hurrr how do i delet image???never mind that nothing else is coming in today
>>12724545You can't delete images that are too old, dumbass. Did you even try?I you want a mod to delete old images ITT I'm pretty sure they'll say they have better things to do like delete cunny off /tv/ rather than cater to some /sci/ autist who doesn't want to start a new thread.
