Here are some points in which you are retarded.
1. The natural numbers are not infinite, that's absurd. They're very finite. The collection of all possible natural numbers, however, is not finite, i.e. infinite.
2. Cantor was wrong about many things, for example the definiteness of the continuum problem as well as his naive definition of a set which brought about a miriad of contradiction.
3. Finitists don't believe the largest natural number exists. That's absurd. You can always add 1. Just because you don't think "the set of all natural numbers" is a valid mathematical object which you can manipulate to your fancies doesn't mean you don't understand the potential infinite.
4. Infinity DOES NOT exist in any empirical form. When we talk about infinity we don't have any referrent besides the abstract ideal image in our heads, whereas when we talk about finite things we can easily construct referrents using computers and algorithms, so that our claims become falsifiable and related to reality. Claims about infinity are NOT about anything empirical.

So, according to Landau, since two functions which differ by total derivative give the same equations, the only way in which the equations could be the same is if the functions differ by a total time derivartive.
In essence, Landau is asserting here that if P=>Q then Q=>P.

You can't be fucking serious. Of course I know that, you're making the same fucking mistake as Landau. Just because adding a time derivative doesn't change the equations, that doesn't mean that the only way you could get the same equations is if you add a time derivative. This is faulty logic. You should supply a separate proof for why the only way the equations can be the same is if the lagrangians differ by a time derivative.

>> No.12709880

Part of the assumption is that the laws of physics are the same for all observers. If you add anything to the Lagrangian that isn’t a time derivative of some function, then integrating in time and varying the result will give you some nonzero addition to your Lagrangian. That amounts to some additional energy in one frame that isn’t seen in the other.

It's not. That's a proof of a completely different proposition.
>How do you intend to make those points stationary if you can’t turn the integral over time into one which produces stationary endpoints?
Explain what you mean in precise mathematical terms to produce a proof. Just saying "how can you expect it to be false" does not constitute a proof that it's true.

Had this interaction with customer support, didn't believe he wasn't a bot.
Anyway, a question for you PhD boys. I have been offered a PhD and this is my question:
Why I as a PhD student working in a well funded field am only paid as much as a bus driver... I just checked the salary and I make only $2k more per year.
I have offers from industry companies that will provide me with $20k more a year than what I make as a PhD student. Why should I stay...? The job opportunities also let me keep learning in a field I find interesting.

The main purpose of the PhD (other than your own happiness/fulfillment/doctor title/whatever) would be to get the jobs you're being offered right now.
If you don't care much for the PhD then definitely take the best job offer you got.

take the job, you can do the PhD anytime in your life, I think is even better when you have experience about the field and know problems that could be solved in your thesis.
