Do typical LED bulbs have a narrower beam angle than incandescent bulbs and "filament" LED bulbs, in your experience? I just watched the teardown at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3iRgHObdYk and it looks like the modern LED bulb has all the LEDs pointed forward and relies on a plastic diffusor.

Not noticeably, they're at least 270° for A19/A21/A16 bulbs.

LED's in general look more artificial than incandescent bulbs, however, they are much more energy efficient.

Get better bulbs with higher CRI>=90

Thanks! I just looked at the Philips bulbs in a store near me and they're E27 and it says that their angle is 200°, but given what you're saying that's probably an underestimate.

Any recommendations for bulbs with great color rendering? The popular Philips bulbs all seem to be CRI 80.

Cree bulbs are all 90 cri and are good quality. Some of Feit electric bulbs are 90 cri (the box says "enhance vivid natural light" and the SKU usually has "CA" in it) and are cheaper. Yuji lights have 95-98 cri but are way more expensive.

That the base screw size.
E27/26 is normal bulb size (26 is American, 27 is European but they're interchangeable)
E17 are used for the big C9 Christmas light bulbs
E12/11 are used for the smaller C7 Christmas light / night light bulbs
E39 are big ass street light / industrial light bulbs (you've probably never seen them before unless you've stole some street lights)
