Most of the people investing in them don't realize that it's only suborbital and that Virgin Orbit is a completely different company that is private. It's not really that they think a suborbital payload service would create much revenue, they instead insist there is a huge market for people to pay $250,000 for a glorified amusement park ride and that their potential customer base are not the same people who could consider Crew Dragon or Starship at a higher cost but a much better experience. Starship is much earlier in development but I'd wager that most of the low-end millionaires are willing to wait for prices to come down.

It should be interesting to watch play out, Virgin Galactic could drop their seat price but they would reduce profitability even more before orbital spaceflight makes them obsolete. It would take them at least ten years to develop another craft that could reach orbit.
>>12694389
You would have to be a masochist to short the stock, it goes up like 10% if they release renders of the interior cabin or news of another test flight. They could actually start up commercial service soon which would greatly increase their retard strength.

Jeff doesn't need to be better, he has government interference on his side. Just this week he got the government to fuck up Starlink's orbital slots and frequency allocations. In the recent past he tried to force NASA to not sign a lease with SpaceX for the old shuttle launch pad by sticking the GAO on them. Some suspect that he's also behind the recent FAA fuckery but that can't be proven. >Elon: So, if we're able to build—or if humanity is able to build—a city on Mars, people will probably remember which planetary conjunction they came on.

That's such a cool thought, I never thought about it. People will obviously go in groups and bond with one another during the trips.

There's going to be so many little things that will create a distinct Martian culture over time, mostly to do with the unique problems they'll have to contend with. Like what if the 0.38g gravity is not enough for the fetus to develop properly? Humans could still solve it by, say, building large orbital ships with artificial gravity and maternity wards, where women would go for the duration of pregnancy. All children would then be born in the fucking sky and descend to the surface, you could have beautiful rituals based around it and everything.

Musk fucking gets it, unlike most people he actually operates in a framework that allows him to realistically imagine where it can all lead us, it's not some wishy-washy fantasy for him.

Ethnic conflict is probably the most destructive force on earth and has brought dozens of great empires and nations to ruin and that is painfully obvious after watching the US literally burn to the ground only for the government to support it’s own destruction, but to be handed a golden opportunity to avoid this on another world only to do it again would be the ultimate black pill.

Whites are the reason people are going to Mars in the first place, they are responsible for vast bulk of nearly every significant invention, innovation and discovery in every subject in existence and much of the problems on earth are due to other groups mishandling these discoveries like the massive amounts of pollution from third world nations trying desperately to play catch up.

if any group would be deserving of this, it’s obvious who. And I hope you are joking when you are talking about creating a society of equals because you can’t be serious? The US is the best example of what you are proposing and it’s a fucking mess which is rapidly becoming an even bigger mess because whites decided to embrace everyone else and create a land of equals only to find out that those other groups aren’t interested in being equal and would rather dominate or that some other groups profit greatly from inequality and have made it their mission to cause as much as possible.

It doesn’t fucking work, how many times does Rome have to fall or the Soviet Union collapse or the US burn before it become obvious to you?

And I bet the people on Mars will become different in time, but they will still all be the same together and as long as that is true no major conflict will come of it.

I’m telling you now that building homes out of bricks even if it’s just to cover the outside of a more fragile habitat is not a good idea from the cost, time of construction and effort.

I would recommend landing down a large amount of temporary habitats and working out of them to dig out some under ground tunnels and spaces for proper, radiation protected, meteoroid proof, expansive and sturdy living space for your colonists.

Concrete can last for thousands of years as we can see from the Roman Empire. The reason modern concrete buildings only last 50 years is because of steel reinforcement. Basalt fibers are great against corrosion but have the same weakness as Fiberglass rebar and that is fire. All Fiber rebars including basalt are bonded with a polymer resin and that will melt/vaporize when the concrete around it heats up and render the rebar useless quick, whereas steel can remain in shape until fairly high temperatures. Fiber reinforced concrete is pretty useful where there aren't any fire hazards though, like marine environments.

I hope this question is related but what is it about fiber (or specifically, “smaller” diameters) that seems to make stuff more prone to igniting. They lost their way way before then. For me, it became apparent when they started outsourcing their core competency. They used to be the best at designing and manufacturing aircraft. Their merger with McDonnell Douglas poisoned their culture. The leadership of the company changed from engineers to accountants.
The turning point was in their development of the 787. They opted to have other companies build their airplane! This was hugely expensive in the long run with massive delays.
The other tipping point was the colossal management failure of the 737 max. It’s apparent they made engineering mistakes because their “fix” to get it back in service was to revise the software (mcas) and hardware (allowing both aoa sensors to validate each other)

>> No.12696752

It's unrelated but let me explain anyways:
Steel heats up when electric current passes through due to resistance. Thin filaments (wool) heats up a lot quicker than a steel pipe because it's lower in mass, the hot steel filament then reacts with the oxygen around it and combusts (wool has a lot of surface area and therefore a lot of access to oxygen since it's made of very thin and long filaments). They outer layer of the steel pipe also reacts with oxygen too when heated up enough, however because it has little surface area (most of the steel mass is on the inside), most of the steel has no access to oxygen will melt rather than combust.

Same reason a block of wood burns very slowly (since only the outside layer has access to oxygen) where as wood dust will combust/explode when suspended in air (lots of surface area with acess to oxygen)

Compressed earth bricks are super low tech and amazing because you just smush dirt (and some other stuff like a couple percent of Portland cement) together with a press.

You wouldn’t use the bricks as air tight barriers, but as the radiation shield or to keep the rocket engine exhaust from launching and landing (or crashing) rockets from sandblasting your habitat. This isn’t a super huge problem on Mars because the atmosphere will slow the blasted grit down fairly quickly but it’s a big problem on the moon. The exhaust velocity of a methalox engine is a few km/s... having that speed blast dust, sand, boulders, etc at your habitat isn’t a good plan. The moons escape velocity is also a few km/s so it’s possible that a rocket could launch some rocks on a trajectory that hits your hab on the opposite side as the rocket launched!
