>tfw went to a low ranked uni for undergrad because I could live at home and save money
How fucked am I? I am in the top 5 - 15 people in my class (depending on the subject) of around 160 people and I will still be discriminated against by employers. I bet some companies have algorithms to simply block my uni out, kek.

That's life, anons. You will always need to suck someone's cock (metaphorically speaking), i.e. your boss. Even if you are business owner, you will suck the cock of your customers. Life is one big cock sucking event.

My school is in the 50s or 60s depending on rankings. There are 125 schools in total, off the top of my head. By subject, my school has been in the 40-60 rank depending on year/ranker. Your school has a budget around 7-8 times higher than mine, according to wiki.

Huh, not as bad as I had imagined. What are you graduating in? I'd say that you are being dramatic and you're going to find a job just fine. Maybe not at HSBC or Vodafone or something but I say give it a shot anyway.

My university has only one ranking in the entire harvard review, and its for being one of the top 10 school for reefer madness and nothing more
I ended up working in a harvard lab and getting my PhD at one of the top cell bio programs in the US, then switched to ML/cell work hybrid for postdoc, working in industry now since lmao postdoc for 6 years for 50k/year doesn't sound appealing
I had postdoc offers in some pretty famous labs, USCF (but fuck SF) even worked in a nobel laureates lab + Janelia Farms (I will always call it JF, I don't like that they dropped the farms) for a bit for some work I needed their equipment for
Literally no one cares that you went to an ivy league anymore, they care if 1) they know someone who knows you (connections) and can vouch for you, 2) you stand out from the A+ factory mills of undergrad.
A lot of admissions roll their eyes with harvard undergrad types where it comes through they think that coming from harvard is in of itself some sort of merit.

Where you go to undergrad literally doesn't matter. What you do in undergrad is what counts. I went to a low ranked school, did 2 years of research with several different professors, got tons of fantastic letters of recommendation. Now I'm in a top 10 school in my field for a grad program.

Tldr; if you didn't waste your time in undergrad you should be fine

Mechanical engineering
There are people at my school who have found engineering jobs with Nissan, BAE, and Airbus. But they are a small minority, the top % of people who are actually smart, knowledgeable, and hard-working. But they also usually do what is called a work placement after 2nd year, something which I did not do because of Covid lockdowns.

I went to a pretty low-ranked university myself (US) and while I know a lot of people from my class didn't land particularly great jobs after graduation, those who set themselves apart from the rest are making pretty good money right now. I wasn't one of them but I'm in grad school now at a good university thankfully unsaddled by undergraduate debt.

I studied physics at a low ranked uni and ended up getting a decent engineering job with above average pay just because I went for a relevant final year project. Employers want people who know what they're doing, not snobs.
I've always held the idea that people who go to ivy leagues are actually disadvantaged because it makes them feel as though they can be carried by their education

Here is my take on the whole issue. I did my undergrad at a high ranked institution for European standards. I later switched to a lower ranked uni for my master, because my grades were not good enough.

From my perspective the real problem with being at a low ranked university is that you become way to complacent if you are doing reasonably fine w.r.t. to you study mates, which will most likely be pretty dumb themselves, since you are both at a shit institution. This means you stop pushing yourself and just coast along thinking you are doing fine, but the reality is that you are not using your full potential. Some of the people in my courses were genius level tier people and seeing them doing their thing was always a good kick in the butt to work harder for me. Once I switched schools I saw some people thinking they were hot shit, because they were doing fine, but in reality could not hold a candle to the good guys at the higher ranked school. You have to avoid falling into this trap.

Of course having good teachers makes things easier, but sometimes this is not even the problem with lower ranked schools. For me teachers at these schools fall into two categories. Either they absolutely want to work in academia, but are shit at their job or they are actually pretty good and knowledgeable, but simply do not want to put up with the stress and pressure at a high ranked institution. The latter are pretty nice to work with and combined with the fact that they usually have to deal with far fewer students than teachers at higher ranked unis can be great to work with. Some teachers at higher ranked unis would not even give you the time of day unless you were some kind of genius savant.
