I've trained myself to hold my breath for 2 minutes at a time, sometimes 3. So I do this most of the day when I pass or am within 10' of another human being. The official white house reply to the CDC was they would not enact defense production. As they were saying this, the white house created a national stockpile just for them and only them. CDC personnel insisted this was a terrible idea, and at least 1 person was fired over it. China did a lot more then just locking down everything, namely they meticulously tracked peoples whereabouts and contacts and could effectively quarantine people in mass. Oddly enough contact tracing should be pretty easy with modern tech, but trust western govs to fuck that up. Even South Korea was able to mount a quick response to the spread and only got fucked by a few super spreader events, and they're still doing better than most western nations while not being able to implement a lockdown. Biggest fuck up in the west wasn't the mask debacle (there's still no reliable data of surgical masks being able to limit the spread) but just completely failing to gather the data tat would be needed to implement a modern strategy to deal with a pandemic. I work for a healthcare provider in NY. When we heard our CMO talk about how employee's can start getting vaccines the mask bullshit was the first question people asked him after the presentation.
