When a spacecraft is sailing around the solar system, they burn fuel for course corrections and to be in the right place for gravity boosts and such.
Is this "fuel" just releasing pressurized gasses or is it actual combustion like a rocket? I know the voyager crafts use ion drives, but I cant image those are responsive enough for course corrections. Anyone know?
Pic entirely unrelated.

The wealthier Elon gets the more government is going to be a problem as they see that not only is he serious about Mars but that he's actually capable of it. Without Elon, Mars isn't just a zone completely out of their dominion, but it's Mount Olympus to them, with carte blanche to reign down righteous fury upon them from the sky which they have absolutely no ability to fight back against. That is a non-option for them. They will do everything within their capability to prevent that from happening. They will kill putting men on Mars before the idea can leave the womb of Elon's mind. Elon effectively having the MIC around his finger with what Starship offers will only work for him so long as he plays ball within the set field. His goals are already outside of that, making that a non-option for Elon.
That being said, if Elon decided to start a pmc for totally inconspicuous purposes I'd probably join it.

the assumption is that villagers will get an evac notice some time before the actual evac. This is how it worked last time, though spacex can be mercurial so everything is subject to change.

Personally I'm not going to get my hopes up unnecessarily. I'll believe that the hop is imminent when either elon tweets, spacex sets up a livestream/updates their website, or someone gets some definitive info.

I kinda wonder if all this fog/smog/whatever the fuck it is is a problem for the landing. Does spacex use visual targeting or just GPS positioning or what for their landings? If it's visual they may be waiting for it to clear. I mean fuck nerdle cam has looked like shit all day.

Impossible question to answer. Earth is by far the craziest planet in our solar system in terms of the sheer amount of processes and geochemical and physical interactions. I think the icy worlds are really interesting, particularly Titan.

First Man is fantastic, you're doing yourself a disservice not seeing it. I don't get where the 'It was deliberately unpatriotic!' stuff came from, it's very openly proud about the program as an American achievement. They pretty explicitly shit on the 'whitey on the moon' anti-USA angle on the landings, so I figure the interviews and early 'controversy' was basically smokescreen to get a "Being Proud of White Men's Achievements" film past media in the current climate.

My biggest problem with it is that it plays up how much of an abrasive dickhead Buzz is to act as a better character foil to Neil, but it's no dealbreaker.

I don't know, because there are too many things to consider when selecting for favorite one. The most interesting geological feature I learned about is cave systems formed by tree trunks that were covered by lava and burned away. For example Funatsu Tanai Lava Tree Mold near Mt. Fuji or similar systems on Hawaii. Really cool.

There may be some small radiogenically-driven hydrothermal systems like Earth's Paralana Hotsprings but otherwise I don't think there have been active hydrothermal systems on Mars for quite some time (at least hundreds of millions of years). Furthermore a lot of the mineral diversity of Earth comes from the fact that it has an oxygen rich atmosphere - this means there are a lot of comparatively (relative to the rest of the solar system) exotic minerals that can form as a result. A good example is uranium which, under reducing conditions, doesn't form much beyond uraninite and pichblende - both boring dark minerals - but in an oxidising environment it can form all manner of colourful and pretty minerals like the Cuprosklodowskite I posted prior and the Torbenite in pic-related.
I do know that there has been a little work in determining the kinds of ore deposits that might be on Mars, the most interesting of which would contain shiny metal-sulfides, which are cool but restricted in mineralic diversity i.e probably little more than chalcopyrite, galena pyrite, nickeline and others. On earth, such deposits may be subjected to weathering which results in all kinds of pretty minerals like malachite, azurite, bornite, chrysocolla and dozens of others.

Most Martian housing, industry and infrastructure will be underground to protect it from radiation so orbital bombings will be difficult or ineffective and they won’t get Belgraded.

Mars has a lower gravity and not much of an atmosphere so launching rockets into orbit will be much easier and cheaper than on earth allowing for a large fleet to be manufactured more easily.

Mars is a wasteland so building massive amounts of industry and mining would be fine without having to fear pollution or damaging the health of locals.

Mars only has a window to get there every 2 years so any earth fleets or attacks could be known long before they even get there and where they will come from.

A couple of comments stuck out to me that /sfg/ knows about all too well:
>“There will definitely be some resistance,” said López-Alegría, who spent 20 years as a NASA astronaut..”
>That was his experience when in 2006, he flew on the Soyuz with Anousheh Ansari, who reportedly paid about $20 million for the experience...
>“I think the hesitancy was natural when you...spend your whole career studying to want to be an astronaut, and then somebody kind of cuts the line...It was a little hard to swallow.”

>“There are a lot of issues — adversity, and in some regards, crises, here, not only in the U.S., but worldwide,” Connor said. “And those absolutely need to be a priority. But we cannot forget about the future. We cannot forget about having long-term visions … And hopefully this mission and the research we’re going to do is going to be one small step on that journey.”

And then the Senate went to Crazytown, legislating a litany of rocket requirements so specific that you’d think the entire chamber had completed coursework on propulsion engineering. They wanted a rocket capable of lifting 70 to 100 tons of mass into low-Earth orbit, and 130 when married to an integrated upper stage. They wanted liquid fuel engines and solid rocket motor engines. They wanted Ares I and space shuttle technology reused wherever possible. And they wanted it flying by December 31, 2016.

The US only imposed sanctions on South Africa in late 1986 while Britain,France,Japan and Israel refused to impose any. Germany even kept its car manufacturing factories in South Africa.
Things started going pear shape inside South Africa after the police massacred school kids in Soweto in 1976 and beat to death Anti-Apartheid icon Steve Biko inside a prison cell in 1977. What followed was mass rolling street demonstrations.

The outcome of the negotiations was that there would be a power sharing government for a certain amount of time, the economy remained largely in white hands along with guarantees that the new government would honor pensions of white civil servants and representation in parliament.

>I have no idea why they didn’t just form a Volkstaat by breaking off a section of land just for whites and giving the rest to the nogs
It wasn’t practical since blacks and other ethnic groups didn’t live that far from the white suburbs.
The Johannesburg area is where the gold and uranium mines are situated and down on the coast is the ports and tourism sector.
US President George H Bush offered to send his Secretary of State to South Africa with a plan to Balkanize the country when negotiations between the ANC and Apartheid government had stalled. That proposal was rejected out of hand by both political parties for the reasons stated above.

Well the outcome of those negotiations clearly didn’t go the way they thought it would which is insane to me to think that even for a moment they believed the nogs that hated them with a passion would somehow allow them to remain as anything more than powerless tax payers especially after watching what happened in Rhodesia.

And as for rejecting the Volkstaat idea they were total fucking retards to turn that down even if it would mean moving a lot of people around as having to move a couple hundred miles is infinitely better than getting hacked to death by a pack of nogs.

SA whites are incredibly stubborn, greedy, lazy and cowardly. They wouldn’t get rid of nogs because they provided cheap labour and they were too lazy to clean their own homes or cut their own grass. They could have taken over the country 30 years ago when they had a hundred thousand militia men and veterans all organised, but instead they stood down and they refused to sell their farms and move to a centralised location for protection in numbers and form a Volkstaat so now they get butchered on their isolated farms.

>When President Idi Amin came to power in a 1971 coup (at the Space Race climax of the Apollo lunar landings), he shortly thereafter announced an impossibly optimistic human spaceflight program, that never progressed beyond an attempt at astronaut training on an obstacle course made up of used automobile tires.[4] In June 1999, this effort received dubious recognition as one of the Time 100 magazine feature's "100 Worst Ideas of the Century".[5]
>Idi Amin's government also developed an interest in UFO activity, and he even claimed to have personally witnessed a UFO over Lake Victoria in 1973.[6] In 1971, at the beginning of his regime, United Nations ambassador Grace Ibingira advocated an early form of post-detection policy to prevent Cold War provocation of hostilities with UFOs.[7] Near the end of the Amin era, Uganda also became the only other country to support Eric Gairy of Grenada's efforts for UN recognition of the phenomenon with a dedicated agency and declaring 1978 as the International Year of UFOs.[8]

>The program has been sustained by donations from around the world, and from 2011, funding has also been supplied by the Ugandan government. A spokesman for the Department of Science and Technology said: "I applaud their ambition ... It provides an opportunity for Africans in general and Ugandans in particular to participate in space science and research instead of being spectators." Flight engineers from the Civil Aviation Authority have been assigned to review and advise the team.[20] However, the head of safety at the Civil Aviation Authority subsequently reported to a Parliamentary science committee that all space activities are illegal in Uganda.

With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. you can buy stock and sell stock, but you can also sell stock you've borrowed from someone else in a bet that it goes down, this is called shorting the stock

What Melvin Capital did was sell stock they didn't have until more shares had been sold short than exist (there were probably more funds involved but Melvin is the one we know and bankrupted lol)

What Reddit and /smg/ did was buy a bunch of Gamestop stock and refuse to sell it, so that the shorts had to go to higher and higher prices in order to buy it back – because remember, they BORROWED stock, which means they OWE those shares to their broker, which means as the price goes up their account goes DOWN

if they get fucked TOO hard their broker will force them to buy back those shares at any price, Reddit's goal is to make them pay $420.69

There are different types of investors, shorters for example are betting against the value of something rising, and sometimes covertly work to make sure the stocks their shorting fail. Borderline if not overtly illegal, but they get away with it most of the time. Elon and a lot of other businesspeople hate the fuck out of shortlets, because they often contribute very little of any real value to any industry, seeing as how their entire strategy for profit is based on the failure of productive enterprises.
