All smiles here space bros. The gears of space industrialization already started turning with Obama, and china made sure it won't stop. I don't know of any failures because of launch clamps as such. Mercury-Redstone 1 failed because they fucked up the grounding wire to the pad, which caused engine shutdown and set off the launch abort rocket when it just got off the pad. Launch sequence obviously caused tons of failures, both Shuttles, Atlas balloon tanks popping.

Boing claims the pre-programmed parameters that they expected the engines to run at were too low, and because they "over performed" the system did a self-shutdown.
They further claim the MCF had triggered about 15 seconds into firing, and that is really wasn't a failure and the error triggered for an unknown reason.
Honestly, I think they bullshitting, with the specific problematic engine shooting out molten bits at shutdown. They are trying hard to cover their asses.

Honestly, in the alternate timeline where WW2 was won by Germany, I don't think those scientists would have been able to get to the Moon had they tried and had been given an unlimited budget. I get that there's some obnoxious noise from the fringe of the D's that agitates against human expansion into space and acts like Musk is a literal babyeater while ignoring fossil fuel executives that do things millins of times worse than making politically incorrect tweets, but the current D leadership likes space-it has that JFK mystique to it. The emphasis on climate is not a bad thing either-more climate satellites mean more potential contracts for SpaceX. The more relevant (and marketable, for the lack of better word) research is actually the other way around. Studying the history of another planet that shares similar roots but followed a different path of evolution can give us a completely new point of view on planetary climate mechanisms and advance the understanding of how our own planet works much farther than hundreds of years of passive Earth observation. Of course this will also require extensive exploration of the whole planet, something a measly rover once every couple of years cannot possibly hope to ever complete.

Current trajectory is insufficient, acceleration is necessary. Trump actively pushed productive new space policy, he didn't just stay the course with what was there already. Will Biden's handlers do the same? We don't know yet.

>> No.12610495

To continue, even more fundamental that this is the European ideal of "dignity". The US Constitution does not even contain the word "dignity"—US citizens do not have a right to dignity like German citizens do and the US in general doesn't respect the European principle of a guaranteed dignified existence. All democrats want is the European constitutional mandate that all humans have a right to a dignified existence which entails an equitable sharing of power. Republicans maintain that the constitution's stance of all humans have the right to autonomy (therefore the choice to live a dignified existence) is the proper one.
You will see a democratic government negotiate in this way because they fundamentally believe that the dignity of the other party must be maintained. The US will not force the hand of a friendly foreign government and will seek to elevate them to equitable partners in any arrangement.

Of course it does, but as it stands right now neither party has the decisive advantage in congress to make sweeping allocations of money and policy changes. Trump did push for more funds just like every other POTUS, he was lucky in that he got to oversee the completion of commercial crew and maturation of reusable rockets. Just how Obama was lucky in that he got to kill the space shuttle thanks to work Bush had put in earlier. I would prefer there to be acceleration, but I'm just not sure the votes are there to free up the money needed to do it. Not due to the fault of Biden, just due to the status quo nature of congress.

Yeah though. I've heard people saying that 2 fired and then the third aborted just before ignition, hence the preburner test-ish fire.

It's actually a bit more mundane than that.

Theres this concept in early planetary formation called the meter size barrier iirc and the gist is that we understand how very tiny particulates aggregate in proto planetary disks, and we understand that after a certain size (larger than meter sized) gravity between rocks becomes strong enough to make them aggregate. But we dont understand how the tiny particulates get to the point of and larger than the meter size barrier, and simulations dont show them aggregating either.

So we have this tray that can free float on springs that has simulants in it with very specifically chosen material properties, and by recording their long term aggregation it helps us better understand that. Additionally we can fire solenoids at the tray to put energy into the system to repeat the experiment.

I might have a video floating around of one of the trays in motion during one of the exos flights, we had a payload on board testing our cubesat hardware, let me see if I can find it.

nice dubs. Seems pretty cool anon. Is this a continuation of the work that Don Pettit started by fucking around with salt, tea, and other powders in space and noticing they aggregated together? I've heard that we now think Oumuamua might have been a fractal aggregate of dust particles too. What are you using for particles? Glass beads? Doesn't the confinement by a surface change things? Can the observation pane cause tribocharging? Could you determine if van der waals forces play a significant role in aggregation? Like we know van der waals forces sort of matter for sand:

An even bigger shitstorm than Challenger. Every former NASA administrator involved in it's development will denounce it. Even Bolden has re-positioned himself for that eventuality with his 'SLS will go away' comment last year and it will be a 3 way fight to escape blame between NASA, the contractors and the senate. Probably ending with private EM-1 getting the green light.

ARK is a group of actively managed funds run by Cathie Wood with a focus on disruptive innovation in their target fields. ARKX is their entry into a space ETF. Presumably, going off ARK's track record of picking winners, ARKX will be filled with disruptive space companies enabled by Starship's low launch cost. That's my bull thesis on space, anyways.

I can't speak 100% on the science aspect of things since I wasn't the PI, but I don't believe it's a continuation of Don Pettit's work. I'm sure if he did planetary microgravity work there's some connection of citations between our papers and his though.

Tribocharging might actually explain the electrostatic effects we saw in the video I posted >>12611193

If I'm not mistaken the red beads are some sort of acrylic that has a like extremely thin gold film, then there's some steel beads, and in the reservoir we have JSC-1 chondrules and some other powder we can inject to change the properties.

Confinement does actually significantly affect the data, there's a later evolution of the hardware that's being developed that would fit into an ESPA class satellite that uses thermophoresis to levitate dust and chondrules in a much larger chamber to help avoid the wall problem.

>inb4 "but they might ban ebil space colonism"

It won't affect a private company who would go under if they don't get payloads into space. It won't affect a military industrial complex who wants new toys. It won't affect the large number of spaceflight fans who just want to see spaceships. I understand that you and others are worried about Biden being Obama 2.0 with spaceflight, but what made Obama's changes so bad for spaceflight was because everything was being betted on NASA. Now there is a company that is taking matters into its own hands and making actual functioning stuff, and stuff weighs more than ideologies

If the money going to climate research was instead spent on planting millions of trees or cleaning swathes of the ocean of trash then sure I wouldn’t mind in the slightest, but things as they are now is just wasting money on more spooky red maps of fecal matter in the Indian Ocean.

Hey spacemen. Quick question, am I calculating acceleration properly?
If you accelerated at 9.81m/s^2 would you really be hitting light speed at 353.702356 days?
Is that kind of longterm acceleration feasible? In 100 years could I go on a big loop around the solar system at relativistic speeds to skip forward to the future?

Yeah I don't disagree. I should clarify: although I accept climate change (as should all of you), I do NOT think NASA should be a dedicated climate research agency. In fact that should be on the absolute bottom of the list. Give more grant money to geologists, invest in carbon capture technology, build some small sats to study sea level change and greenhouse dynamics - but for the love of God, don't fucking sacrifice human spaceflight and planetary probes for sealevelsat flying on SLS

Generally no, at least not with a ship that needs to carry it's own propellant. Light or magnetic sails can in theory but you need shit loads of infrastructure spread across the solar system, and even then travelling that fast has problems, eg your ship needing to absorb/deflect/avoid relativistic impacts.

The primary users of Jason-3 data are people who are dependent on marine and weather forecasts for public safety, commerce and environmental purposes. Other users include scientists and people who are concerned with global warming and its relation to the ocean. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) are using the data primarily for monitoring wind and waves on the high seas, hurricane intensity, ocean surface currents, El Niño and La Niña forecasts, water levels of lakes and rivers. Jason-3 also reports on environmental issues such as algae blooms and oil spills. NASA and CNES are more interested in the research aspect, in terms of understanding and planning for climate change. Jason-3 can measure climate change via sea surface height because sea surface rise, averaged over annual time scales, is accelerated by warming global temperatures. Ultimately, the benefits of Jason-3 data will transfer to people and to the economy.

Sounds like a lot more than just determining if climate change is real
