>> No.12575224

>>12575203
Like I said, your guess is as good as mine, but I doubt it was planned because they'd've had the road closures extended officially beforehand. They got all the way to sounding the siren just before the end of the window, which would've meant a static fire just after its end, but then it did the distinctive abort vent and there was lots more venting from the ground tanks. But there might've been a problem before that because the sequence was kind of odd - it took a long time for the engine to be chilled. I wonder if there was some minor issue cropping up, and they decided to chance it today instead of waiting for tomorrow - and it turned into something a bit more major.

>>12575217
Yeah, that's what makes me think it's a genuine issue, because the road's still closed and it can't've been the plan to piss off the local police by having an officer stuck out there for two hours after he was meant to be relieved.

Dynetics’ lander is shit. It looks great don’t get me wrong, but it can only support a crew of 2 for 1 week on the surface, and a crew of 4 for less than a day as a “taxi.” Dynetics’ lander literally can’t meet the Artemis goal of landing more than 2 people on the moon at a time because of this. Also Dynetics’ lander lacks an airlock. This is bad. Lastly, their landing engines are right on the ground. If the lander touches down a bit too hard and crushes the engine bells (as happened on a few Apollo missions) the crew are screwed.

>>12575399
Starship relies on major technologies that are large unknowns at the moment. I want Starship to succeed, but it’s very ambitious. I don’t doubt Starship makes it to orbit this year. However the ability to store thousands of tons of fuel is unknown to us. LunarShip also requires the ability to receive at least a dozen tanker flights before it can land and return to the NRHO. This launch cadence has yet to be demonstrated by any vehicle larger than the Falcon 9, let alone something that is the size of Starship.

>>12575401
National Team’s lander is very conservative. It’s also very safe.
>Oh no our descent stage engine failed
>Don’t worry let’s just fire the ascent stage and abort to orbit
People complain about the ladder and I admit that I dislike it too, but it’s not that bad if you think about it.

Keep in mind that I do think Starship is the future, it just has to demonstrate A LOT of tech before it actually does it’s job. National Team and even Dynetics just have to build a lander. SpaceX has to make an entire infrastructure.

In defining these requirements, the NASA Administrator shall take into account considerations unique to the utilization of nuclear energy systems in space, such as:

(i) transportability of a reactor prior to and after deployment;

(ii) thermal management in a reduced- or zero-gravity environment in a vacuum or near-vacuum;

(iii) fluid transfer within reactor systems in a reduced or zero-gravity environment;

(iv) reactor size and mass that can be launched from Earth and assembled in space;

(v) cooling of nuclear reactors in space;

(vi) electric power requirements

(vii) space safety rating to enable operations as part of human space exploration missions;

(viii) period of time for which a reactor can operate without refueling; and

(ix) conditioning of reactor components for use in the space environment.

A dry LunarStarship needs 550 tons of fuel to go from a NRHO to the Lunar Surface and back again. This is assuming it only weighs 100 tons due to it lacking a heat shield and wings. This assumes a 5 metric ton payload there and back, which is small, but is enough for 6 crew for a week on the surface (probably).

The LunarShip sits in its NRHO. In LEO, a Tanker is filled up from 6 refueling launches to carry 550 tons of methalox in its payload bay. It would need 10 more launches (100 tons of fuel each) to fill up its main tank in order to give it the 3.65 km/s of delta V needed to leave LEO and enter the NRHO with the LunarShip. This campaign thus needs 17 launches to complete (18 counting the launch of LunarShip to the NRHO). I7 launches of Starship is a lot.

Having a larger volume to store is actually something that makes the problem easier. Like trying to keep a thousand liters of water from boiling out of a pot suspended over a stove vs trying to keep a drop of water from boiling in the same situation. Larger volume and mass of cryogenic fluid in a larger, greater-volume-to-surface-area-ratio tank means that the insulation and cooling issues all get more trivial. Beyond a certain scale even hydrogen's passive boiloff in an uninsulated tank would be measured in fractions of a percent per week (this scale would be enormous because hydrogen a shit, but for methane/oxygen it is vastly smaller).

Anon please tell me you understand it's about thrust per dollar and not actual raw thrust, right?
Hydrolox engines are just as expensive as other engines, if not more so, but they have relatively low thrust because of their reduced propellant mass flow rate (because hydrogen). To make up for this many (too many imo) designers choose to stretch the tanks as much as possible to get as large of a wet mass as possible, then add "cheap" additional thrust to the first stage (usually solids, and also note that no booster is cheap unless it's rapidly reusable a la Falcon Heavy side boosters).
If you wanted to build a purely hydrolox rocket with no non-hydrolox propulsion you could do that, no showstoppers. The only issue is that since hydrolox has an abysmal bulk density, and since rocket payload is delivered as a fraction of the total mass of the launch vehicle on the pad, you'd need a much larger hydrolox rocket to achieve the same payload to LEO compared to denser propellants. In fact you need about 4x the total tank volume in order to get the same performance, which will still be with a slightly lighter rocket, the Isp of hydrolox making up the difference.

As a perfect example of what I'm talking about just look at the Saturn V. It used two hydrolox upper stages, one of them very large, atop a kerolox stage. That kerolox first stage is roughly half of the volume of the entire rocket, but when fueled it accounted for fully 80% of the total mass. To put that into perspective, if the first stage of the Saturn V were a hydrolox stage as well, it would need to be about 4x the volume of the actual real life Saturn V first stage, meaning it would likely end up both wider and taller with a more closely packed engine arrangement (as well as way more than 5 engines). The thing about rockets is that you pay for the dry mass, because that's what you actually build.

If I had to buy a new car every time I wanted a burger you can bet you ass it'd be cheaper to drive my reusable semitruck instead. We're not talking about a small difference in per-kg cost here, we're talking about the actual all-up cost of the two options being separated by two orders of magnitude. It's the difference between spending ten dollars in gas for the truck vs $1000 on a shit box that gets impounded and crushed after you get home.

Zero. First of all hydrolox isn't much better than methalox even for zero G vacuum propulsion. Second it has shit density which would mean each Starship would need to be massively stretched to contain the same ~1,300,000 kg of propellant, which would also make Starship mass a shitload more. The use of hydrolox would also reduce the total stage thrust force, making it even worse. Finally, Starship only needs to refuel at all if it's doing something like sending more than 30 tons onto a geostationary transfer orbit. If you're launching to LEO you don't need to refuel. If you're wanting to go to the Moon but don't want to rely on refueling in LEO, you can just add 100 tons of propellant to your payload vehicle and have it send itself to the Moon. While you're at it add another 20 tons of science equipment or whatever too.

SpaceX announced that the Raptor would run on methalox at 2012, and Blue Origin claimed that the BE-4, which started development in 2011, was always a methalox engine. Alright bro’s I’m trying to design a realistic interplanetary warship. This assumes fusion engine with an ISP of 27000 seconds (currently listed for the VISTA engine). Second, I gave the ship a dry mass of 1000 tons. This seems reasonable I guess. With 1000 tons of propellant, we get a Delta V of 183 kilometers/second. Our vehicle can reach a max speed of 90 km/s. At 90 km/s, the warship can travel 1 AU in 19 days, or 10 AU in 200 days.

Thoughts? Should I increase or decrease the dry mass? Should the ISP go up? I’m trying some worldbuilding but I want to be accurate.

Then it turns out that the war was actually started by Elon in the first place when he tricked China, Russia, India and the US into nuking each other by bombing those nations with a stealth starship thereby removing his only true competitors and allowing him to declare himself God emperor of mankind.

Seems light for a warship. Is this some sort of frigate? How did you calculate the dry mass? How much of this dry mass is armor?

Yeah it’s very rough calculations. It turns out that reaching fast speeds with a heavy warship need a fuckton of (often hydrogen) propellant, which sucks because then your warship becomes a giant hydrogen tank. I started with trying to make a realistic rocinante, but it turns out that Roci has magical engines.

I have to ask, have you looked into Atomic Rockets?
>Yeah it’s very rough calculations.
Understandable. I suggest instead of looking at raw mass amounts you use mass fractions such as dry mass over total wet mass (the dry mass ratio). These values tend to be universal across different scales and would make the math simpler. As for the dry mass ratio, find a real proposal of a spacecraft that uses a similar engine to what you want to use for your fighting spacecraft, get the dry mass ratio, and double it since warships tend to be made more sturdy than exploration craft.

So you're using an afterburner fusion engine? Because fusion engines can run just off the fusion fuel with no additional propellant. If you're injecting non-fusion products into a fusion engine then you're doing it for the added thrust. In that case then water or methane would offer better thrust and storage density than hydrogen. However keep in mind that the engine would suffer a loss in efficiency. http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/enginelist3.php#afterburnerfusion
