Are there still any arguments for the usage of imperial units?

Imperial

Inches is a more practical unit than centimeters for things like carpentry and construction because it is divisible by more whole numbers, which is something you don't realize till you use it irl. You can divide twelve into thirds and quarters (along with half for both), much more convenient than trying to measure out and cut 3.33 cm repeatedly

>> No.12565283

length measurements with binary fractions instead of decimals is pretty comfy. so is temperature in multiples of 25.

doing theory with imperial is a little less nice.

How is 1 divisible by more numbers than 1?
A centimetre can be divided into thirds just as easily as an inch can.

ok, then show how many centimeters you have when it's divided into a third. Do it in base 10 to the last decimal place.

I'll do that in base 12 here: 0.4

you're intentionally missing the point. The english system groups things using numbers that have multiple divisors. you can divide 1 foot into halves, fourths, thirds, and sixths. With the meter you can only divide into 2 5 10 etc, and it's obsolete since nobody does this math on their fingers and toes anymore.

the meter itself is a known erroneous calculation based on earth measurements, and they knew it at the time they published it.

The inch is just as scientific as the meter is, since the inch can be defined as 500 millionth of the diameter of the earth - with the same error rate as used to calculate the meter

Cutting a board that is a foot long into thirds is much easier than doing the same to a board that is one meter. As you get longer the divisors increase even more- it is much easier to work with 6 feet as 72" and cut it to various lengths than to divide 1.8 meters

There is no scenario in which someone (or any manual, scientific measure, whatever) would use third of a foot instead of the sane version of that in centimetres or millimetres.

You say it's easier to work with 72 inches (completely arbitrary number) than with 72 cm (also completely arbitrary)? Sure 72 inches is exactly 6 feet but 72 cm is exactly 0,72 metres.

Inches and feet are good, fractions with changing denominators is TRASH

I've always advocated for decimal inches. Not the retarded engineer's measure where they divide 1 foot into 10 inches, that's not compatible with standard imperial. Just put fractions of an inch in decimal for the love of fuck. It's super intuitive and easy to do math with. Just with increments of .05, you get 20 units of precison instead of 16. Don't need that much prevision? Use increments of .1, or .25 . I can figure something as barely longer or shorter by just adding or subtracting .05 with no reducing of fractions required for formality. It's easier to write on paper and uses less vertical space. Fucking kills me when something is supposed to be nominal inches but I have to write 15/16 or 1/16 on it because people were fucking retards.

I actually own such a stanley measuring tape, but it's only decimal on one side and no one makes it as a full size tape.
