>>12551594Easier to follow the craft's contours and also cheaper to replace since smaller segments can get damaged individually
>>12551594Might be an economies of scale thing especially for the tiles that arent a simple curved or flat hexagon (nosecone and flaperon joint tiles).Could also be that if a tile breaks free there's less area exposed to the raw plasma stream.

>>12551585god they really have to be careful with that, the tiles is one of the things that made the space shuttle execution system what it was.Ideally they would be all identical and mass produce them at a retarded pace, also they should be stupidly easy to produce.Like, they should keep retarded amounts of them in storage warehouses near the launch pad and in orbit. It shuold be as easy as "hey joe, tiles X-3 and K-17 need replacing" "on it"
>>12551594maybe they want shorter straight lines
>>12551642also the hexagon is one of the shapes that can build a continuous plane, like squares and a few others.
>>12551639Cirno is not an anime
>>12551641fortunately the steel construction should make things more forgiving. Remember that we should have lost another Space Shuttle. Only reason we didn't is that they tile fell off over a bit of steel, which unlike aluminum could survive reentry.
>>12551594Wasn't there an issue with the larger tiles crumbling apart near the edges? Might be because smaller tiles overall don't have as much of themselves as far away from the three structural attachment points. Also probably >>12551606 as well. Results in smaller gaps between tiles.
>>12551653lol, its almost literally a case of why dont you build the whole airplane out of the material the black box is made of
>>12551641wasn't the shuttle's bottom part made of graphite? steel should be better.
>>12551677It was reinforced carbon-carbon and silica heat tiles. A cool material but brittle as shit and they were fucking glued on
>>12551685>they were fucking glued onI always asked myself how oldspace could allow such an engineering monstrosity
>>12551657The shuttle was extremely mass starved, in fact the orbiters were "trimmed down" versions of their original design because the SSME engines dropped a bit of ISP as their design matured into reality. They were stuck with specific engines, specific solids, and very strict requirements about the payload bay, the shuttle's capacity and wings. The SS definitely should be able to survive a lost tile during reentry. Though if it does scrapping it is the next step.
>>12551677carbon-carbon graphite was on the leading edges that needed more protection. Far heavier than the fragile silica foam tiles. Frankly given the all-round fragility humans never should have been riding in the thing. I believe that starship uses a TUFROC derivative, which is sturdier. Dream Chaser also uses something similar.
>>12551557its like a portable ISS module I love itcygnus station when
>>12551689>designed in the 70's around budget cuts and technical and time constraints>not upgraded until the early 00's because lol congress gotta vote for it and no sane director will bother requesting the money for useless shit anyway #yolo>upgrading it meant less jobs and more cost effective work using robotics and so = less money for contractors and less votes for politicians
>>12551702Thats what the lunar gateway will be
>>12551585>>12551594Imagine how much easier replacing/setting tiles would be for like 90% of starships surface once they create a dedicated servicing structure that rolls up to starship (or starship rolls up to) and a circular attachment fits over it and applies/presses tiles all across the body, simplifying and maybe even automating servicing of tiles compared to the way they did it with all their custom tiles applied manually piece by piece on the shuttle...simply cylinder shape really helps smooth and simplify the process
>>12551709>will be>Not "would have been"Updating your expectations for you, don't mind me.
Doing the math with starship, once it reaches maturity and costs ~$20/kg to leo, real estate in space will cost a similar amount to Manhattan.Manhattan real estate costs around $15000 per square meter. Assuming launch cost is half of overall cost, which is reasonable given we could build the habitat out of cheap steel, then so long as each square meter of habitat launched masses less than 375kg it will cost less than manhattan real estate.
>>12551702I remember when we could have got Columbus space station
>Axiom space station will only cost $2 billion>that's 98% cheaper than the ISSthe ISS is finito

>>12552146SLS is orange as a she-boon is covered in KFC spices.
>>12552339>Is this type of engine more or less interchangeable with gas-generator engines? Not very familiar with the tap-off approach. No, they're completely different. In combustion tap-off you take hot gasses directly from the main combustion chamber and use them to spin the turbine. With magic materials this can actually be the best cycle, unfortunately magic isn't real and this cycle sucks ass as a result, because you have to deal with shit like 'melting' and 'erosion'. If we had materials that could operate at >3000 celsius we could design rockets that had guts more like airbreathing jet engines, where the front of the pipe has fuel and oxidizer inlets, the liquids get spun to super high pressure, they flow into the main combustion chamber and burn completely, then flow out over a turbine and out through the nozzle. This shit would be amazing in terms of TWR and efficiency and thrust, but it can't exist. FFSC is the real world ideal, and it's a bit more complex and heavy, but still ideal with what can actually be built. Gas generator works by splitting off a small amount of fuel and an even smaller amount of oxidizer to burn in a small, extremely fuel-rich combustion chamber. The hot-but-manageable gasses from this small chamber blow across a turbine and spin the pump impellers. This cycle is pretty simple and not that efficient and doesn't offer massive combustion chamber pressures BUT it's easy enough that you get a worthwhile engine if you don't design it stupid on purpose. If you're really smart like SpaceX you can build a kerolox gas generator that mogs most engines of any description, due to being relightable and extremely reliable and also have yuge TWR.

Dates still in flux, but If Crew-2 were to launch in April and Crew-1 to come home in May that would not leave much room in the schedule. 1/>If there’s a launch delay that could make things real tight. >>12552872Yes, but it's a different kind of stupid, it's naivety. Highly intelligent people tend to automatically avoid most of the pitfalls they come across as they develop and therefore have no real experience with how BAD shit can get. They just have a vague misty understanding of what a famine or a war is. They also tend to trust their own judgement a lot more than the average person because they are used to being right. Combine those two things and you end up with a person who has it aaall figured out and will fight for their perfect societal system right up until the products of that system decide that person is problematic/privileged and decide to draw and quarter him.

I'd be surprised if they have a new rocket deep in development though, since it would have to be either a slightly larger Electron (doable but may not be worth it), a large rocket capable of propulsive landing (probably not doable), or some totally new concept. Also, Rocket Lab's satellite business is ramping up, so if Starship renders Electron obsolete (I don't think it will), they'd still have that.
