Where are the flying cars? Where are the laser guns? Why aren't we exploring space and looking at colonising planets? Why don't we have actually sophisticated robots doing our menial work for us? Why haven't we cured cancer yet? Why do humans still only live for roughly 70/80 years average, and become decrepit and useless if they do live 100+? Why don't we have cyborgs and genetically modified babies etc?

Instead we basically just live in a perpetual neverending 2000s except with increasingly dystopian levels of surveillance, censorship and tech company power. We basically live in a sci-fi dystopia except with all the cool sci-fi shit removed, and somehow tech companies became super powerful but without developing any actual interesting tech. What the actual FUCK happened?

Because you are obsolete. You think these robots would work for you? You are like a horse in 1900, no, there wont be new horse jobs after cars, no, you can't retrain, no, enlisting in the cavalry doesnt work either.

We *are* developing the engineering to explore space and to colonise planets. Cancer *is* being fought. CRISPR *is* being worked.
To answer your question, there were major knowledge and cost hurdles, that needed to be surmounted, and it's taken 2000-2020 to surmount them.
(All this said, we could have had Orion rockets blasting off from Baffin / Greenland to set up lunar habitats in the 1970s. So, blame your grandfather.)

>Why don't we have actually sophisticated robots doing our menial work for us?
because they have wagies to do that work for them

because it's hard
>Why do humans still only live for roughly 70/80 years average, and become decrepit and useless if they do live 100+?
because of the aging process

why don't you go and make them?

Of these the most disappointing one is that we don't have robot slaves.
It's really something we should've developed 200 years ago as part of abolitionism.
Would make this world such a better place to live.

Rome wasnt built in a day, man. If you keep up with scientific news, youd realise we arent stagnating. the price of rockets has fallen dramaticly and they are at least partially reusable, ai and computing in general have developed tremendously, robots are far more sophisticated then they were 20 years ago, self driving cars, drones.. delivery robots were authorized recently, and then ther is biology. CRISPR, miRNA, sleeping beauty tranzpozon system, iPSC and AdSC cultures and mother fucking human organoids!
Even on a personal level. Compare the floppy discs and flipfones of the 90-s and 00-s to the comparatively supercomputers we have in our pockets. THE MOTHER FUCKING INTERNET!

Why advance technology quickly, when you can sell more products with incremental improvements?
Why invent sturdy things that last for eons, when selling more things is more profitable?
Why invest in fusion, when oil is still currently very profitable, and less risk regarding returns?
Why cure diseases if those being cured, won't have to pay for more treatments?
Why make education cheap when you can make money from it, and it's ever-increasingly necessity?
Why encourage innovation, when current things are making bank right now, and innovation could threaten that via making competition?

>Where are the flying cars?
Not practical.
>Where are the laser guns?
US military has some working laser weapons on ships.
>Why aren't we exploring space and looking at colonising planets?
We are developing technology to do so. Just look at SpaceX.
>Why don't we have actually sophisticated robots doing our menial work for us?
We are unironically almost there, give it 10 years tops.
>Why haven't we cured cancer yet?
Cancer isn't a simple viral or bacterial disease, it's your own mutated cell attacking your body. But there are several methods with have been efficient in treating certain types of cancer, so it's no longer a death sentence.
>Why do humans still only live for roughly 70/80 years average, and become decrepit and useless if they do live 100+?
Telomere shortening. Can possibly be fixed with gene editing.
>Why don't we have cyborgs and genetically modified babies etc?
BMI is still in development stages and human gene editing is illegal for some reason.

>Second paragraph
Technology is advancing at a normal rate, you just became so used to it that you don't notice it anymore and take it for granted. Transistors are still shrinking, you have what in 1990s would have been considered a supercomputer in your pocket (inb4 smartphone bad). Just try not to be such a fucking pessimist and watch tech news from time to time.

>Where are the flying cars?

Sort of exists, but was never a good idea, it only works in scifi because you can just pretend that you have perfect traffic AI or that people are not shit at flying. Flying is energy intensive, so you would only do that if there is a significant advantage, it's also difficult, so why would anyone in their right mind give the average Joe access to a flying car?

>Where are the laser guns?

Was always a stupid idea, at least in the way they are used in shows. Why would you use laser guns when kinetic projectiles are just better?

>Why aren't we exploring space and looking at colonising planets?

We sort of are, space is big, so even going outside of the solar system is an enormous undertaking. The type of colonization done in most scifi relies on first of all having a real incentive to spend massive resources on it, and secondly on having magical propulsion.

>Why don't we have actually sophisticated robots doing our menial work for us?

We do, it's just happening slowly enough that you can't see it. Many factories have humans pretty much just to do small tasks and oversee the machines now. Some of the more visible menial tasks are actually quite complicated to automate.

>Why haven't we cured cancer yet?

Because cancer is incredibly complicated. For thousands of years we had pretty much nothing against cancer, we have made huge progress in the past 80 years.

A lot of this stuff is already or is becoming reality, just look a bit closer.

>What the actual FUCK happened?
What any person with half a brain would have predicted: technology is NOT a self-aware invisible hand and can only go where its masters decide to make it go.
Unless people start seizing technologies by themselves instead of waiting for the invisible hand or the government to lend them shit from above, technological feudalism is the only future that awaits us

Lasers aren't that good for killing people. All you do is burn a small hole in their skin. Turn out water has a high heat absorption capacity, and humans are made mostly of water.

i have been thinking quite a lot about the following. thanks to advnacment in automation we need less and less people to maintain our needs, and population is rising, so unemployment will inevitably rise. but i dont think everyone would be content with just doing nothing. people, especially the smarter ones, get bored. would it not be benificial for humanity to increase access and funding to/for science and scientific education? i understand there is an intelligence and crativity barrier to doing science, but a lot of labwork is gruntwork and i sure as shit could use lab assistants. How much faster would scientific progress be if we had acces to a larger work force and more resources? What do you anons think? is this one of those things where human progress speeds up human progress?

I don't know why we don't advance that fast, maybe because state regulations and hard rules, maybe because nannies states who only watch and do nothing in term of advancing mankind, maybe because we don't take risks anymore like Elon for example, without him going to space would not have advanced so quickly, NASA is almost useless an organization full of corruption, nepotism and sucks money from the state. Maybe because we put in prison those who want to advance humanity because of morality
