To answer your question, there were major knowledge and cost hurdles, that needed to be surmounted, and it's taken 2000-2020 to surmount them.
(All this said, we could have had Orion rockets blasting off from Baffin / Greenland to set up lunar habitats in the 1970s. So, blame your grandfather.)

If you keep up with scientific news, youd realise we arent stagnating. the price of rockets has fallen dramaticly and they are at least partially reusable, ai and computing in general have developed tremendously, robots are far more sophisticated then they were 20 years ago, self driving cars, drones.. delivery robots were authorized recently, and then ther is biology. CRISPR, miRNA, sleeping beauty tranzpozon system, iPSC and AdSC cultures and mother fucking human organoids!

Why advance technology quickly, when you can sell more products with incremental improvements?

Cancer isn't a simple viral or bacterial disease, it's your own mutated cell attacking your body. But there are several methods with have been efficient in treating certain types of cancer, so it's no longer a death sentence.

Sort of exists, but was never a good idea, it only works in scifi because you can just pretend that you have perfect traffic AI or that people are not shit at flying. Flying is energy intensive, so you would only do that if there is a significant advantage, it's also difficult, so why would anyone in their right mind give the average Joe access to a flying car?

We sort of are, space is big, so even going outside of the solar system is an enormous undertaking. The type of colonization done in most scifi relies on first of all having a real incentive to spend massive resources on it, and secondly on having magical propulsion.

We do, it's just happening slowly enough that you can't see it. Many factories have humans pretty much just to do small tasks and oversee the machines now. Some of the more visible menial tasks are actually quite complicated to automate.

Because cancer is incredibly complicated. For thousands of years we had pretty much nothing against cancer, we have made huge progress in the past 80 years.

i have been thinking quite a lot about the following. thanks to advnacment in automation we need less and less people to maintain our needs, and population is rising, so unemployment will inevitably rise. but i dont think everyone would be content with just doing nothing. people, especially the smarter ones, get bored. would it not be benificial for humanity to increase access and funding to/for science and scientific education? i understand there is an intelligence and crativity barrier to doing science, but a lot of labwork is gruntwork and i sure as shit could use lab assistants. How much faster would scientific progress be if we had acces to a larger work force and more resources? What do you anons think? is this one of those things where human progress speeds up human progress?
