Most of the thrust of the SLS at sea level comes from the boosters.
Also, most of the mass of SLS on the pad is the solid boosters.
This means we could replace the solid boosters with liquid boosters even if those liquid boosters had significantly less thrust, because they'd also have significantly less mass. The ideal would be a high chamber pressure hydrocarbon-oxygen liquid fuel engine. For example, we could pay SpaceX to slap together two stainless steel side boosters built to fit nine Raptors each, which would let the SLS send more payload to LEO than the Block 2 configuration while still allowing for booster RTLS landing. Instead they're choosing to cut their own hamstrings and go with solid boosters forever.

Tankage is most of the cost of Falcon 9, Atlas V, Delta IV, and even SLS. Rocket lab would unironically need to have had some kind of significant design/production breakthrough in order to produce the Electron rocket such that its engines were the majority of the cost, especially since those engines are likely to be very cheap per kN of thrust due to being mostly printed AND using electric pumps rather than more difficult/expensive gas driven turbopumps.

Delta IV is over half engine cost. F9 is more like ~40% at 28m launch cost. SLS doesn't belong in a sane society and for Atlas V it depends on what you factor in the solids as (which are both tank and engine, basically), with the liquid engines being 30-45% of overall launch costs. In all cases engines are certainly at least a relevant factor, falling somewhere between 30-60%. None of this explains why Rocketlab needs most of ~5m for a piece of CF that shouldn't cost more than a tenth of that or why you think that simply because their engines have some cost cutting measures that they are automatically irrelevant to the overall cost.

Who in the absolute fuck thought hydrogen first stages was a good idea. I loved the space shuttle growing up. Adored it. Now I realize it was a fucking cunt if a rocket with no purpose and no grace. I always considered the Saturn V a relic from the past, but the older i’ve gotten the more and more I’ve respected it. The saturn V could absolutely fly today and would still BTFO any other rocket on the planet. And with upgraded engines and computers it could get us anywhere and would function as a good holdover until Starship

>Who in the absolute fuck thought hydrogen first stages was a good idea.
IIRC the shuttle's hydrogen first stage engines and the TPS made out of fairy wings and unicorn farts were because of all the bullshit dry mass penalties of the USAF modifications to the design which were basically never used. Then those SSMEs and SSRBs became "engines we already have in stock" to make the up front cost of SLS more palatable to Congress.
>And with upgraded engines and computers
Did you know that P&W pitched a modernized F-1B with less than 100 parts per engine to NASA for SLS and they turned it down? We got fucking robbed.

>> No.12375005

>>12374981
Yeah it's a mess of a problem. Shuttle had soul in the design phase but got assraped when it came to being forced to choose a final product. And then they had to stick with the shit to build SLS to keep funding. If NASA had the hindsight of knowing the future they should have done this:
• Build Saturn V for Apollo/Skylab program
• Funding cut? Okay. Build a scaled-down Saturn (instead of the shuttle) build 2 variants basically the same, 1 for a crew capsule and 1 for cargo. Call it the USL (Universal Saturn Launcher).
• Give USL a modular design. Basically for both the crew and cargo variant, everything is the same except for what gets slapped on top. Also expect for new engines to come out in the future when tech becomes available a la F1-B
• Never ever ever touch hydrolox. Don't fuck around with a spaceplane concept unless you want to do a USL dynosoar. Just keep it simple and cheap

On the one hand, it's supposed to be better than any rocket currently in operation, despite coming from a company that hasn't built any orbital rocket yet.
On the other hand, SpaceX showed that it wasn't impossible for a top-tier orbital rocket to come from a fresh company, and Blue Origin practices corporate espionage.

I’ve come back around on The Boring Company after being pretty staunchly in the ‘It’s fucking retarded” camp. The idea of making faster and more powerful TBMs through electrification and automation is a sound idea. The diameter of the tunnels is lacking but if they can build 2 tunnels at 12ft in the same time that another company can build 1 24ft tunnel then they’re coming out even.

The problem is the vehicle. The Model X is just all kinds of wrong as a mass transit vehicle. It’s a slow and inconvenient process to get all 7 passengers and luggage loaded with the current layout. What would be better would be a wheelchair accessible low floor minibus type vehicle where everyone stands and is supported by safety straps and standing seats. Way higher passenger capacity and way easier to board. A better vehicle would save the concept.

But ultimately, it really is just a poor man’s train. End blog

Checked and yes. Falcon 9 is a workhorse but it's one flaw is it's length. A light breeze can blow it sideways. While this is doesn't sound like a big deal, when you are traveling at mach bagillion it's enough to rip your rocket apart even by turning just a few degrees in the thicker part of the atmosphere. It isn't solely a spacex problem though; most rockets scrub because of this. Also Starship is being designed from the ground up to not give a shit about weather conditions.

man on the moon. Starship. Do great things and everything else will fall into place. SpaceX has already started the wave with their propulsive landings. I mean I'll be honest it's why I'm here typing this- F9 reinvigorated my love of space. People just got really bored of LEO shuttle bullshit and satellites. Space tourism will be massive once it becomes viable. Tom Cruise in Dragon and ISS next year will be massive. Next send a celebrity in starship to the moon and watch space attention will pass a tipping point and explode

lmao, incorrect. They installed one of their machines upside down, and another time they simply dropped a tank. Nothing about SLS is even new tech, that's the point. Sure it's got some new engineering, ie they had to make a core stage that had the same diameter as the Shuttle ET and basically nothing else in common, but friction stir welding has been a thing for a long time. For example, at the same time that they were fucking around trying to get FSW working for SLS, SpaceX was already using it for Falcon 9 construction.

Actually having no atmosphere doesn't matter, that only changes the total delta V you need for landing. If your vehicle has a local TWR of ~2 you are golden to land propulsively from orbit, any more than 2 and you're overpowered, less than 1.5 TWR and you start to lots of gravity losses. Note however that a TWR of 2 on the Moon is a TWR of ~0.3 on Earth, so even for something as massive as Starship you only need weak engines for landing.

And somehow, without doing an unmanned test, the LM worked flawlessly on the first attempt, and every attempt since. Check out the landings after Apollo 11 if you wanna really smile.

Yes to all. The only way for SLS to get cancelled would be for congress to overwrite their current law stating that SLS has to be used for certain things with a new one stating that the previous law is null and void and that anything that was supposed to be launched on SLS can now be launched on any sufficiently large rocket approved by the respective project heads.
The president might be able to use an executive order to change it, not sure though.

SLS will most likely fly sometime next year. The question is whether or not they can find a payload for it to carry after EM-1. There’s enough potential pork in the Artemis program for congress to keep the whole thing alive, so it’s a decent bet that they’ll be flying lunar missions with it at some point in the future.

why dont we just build it andlaumch nothing on it? if the biden admin wants to delay Artemis landing to 2028 or later, what the fuck exactly are we supposed to do with our supposed "one launch per year" ? Are we just gonna launch them without purpose for the better part of a decade? obviously we wont be launching that many, bjt I don't understand why we're gonna be building them without using them.

>(June 2003) --- Astronaut Nancy J. Currie, wearing a training version of an advanced concept space suit, shakes hands with a Robonaut prior to participating in a test at the Johnson Space Center to evaluate hand-in-hand work with robots. The second of the two Robonauts used in the demonstration's task -- the assembly of an aluminum truss structure--is out of frame.

I think the current chinese plan involves sending the various components of their lunar spacecraft and assembling it piece by piece in orbit using long march 5 rockets.
I'm pretty sure they have abandoned the long march 9 for now.

Easy: you spend 20 years and half the country's budget to build the plant, all while having the police beat the protesters, then it blows up and slowly kills everyone with invisible radioactive fallout. My coworker's neighbour's friend had a 3rd cousin who lived in Poland when Chernobyl happened and he died 20 years later of lung cancer because of it. Yes, he smoked two packs a day for his whole life, why do you ask?

nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/multimedia/pia07966.html
>Saturn is a source of intense radio emissions, which have been monitored by the Cassini spacecraft. The radio waves are closely related to the auroras near the poles of the planet. These auroras are similar to Earth's northern and southern lights. This is an audio file of radio emissions from Saturn.
>Saturn's hexagon is a persistent hexagonal cloud pattern around the north pole of the planet Saturn
>It rotates with a period of 10h 39m 24s, the same period as Saturn's radio [/plasma] emissions from its interior.
>The hexagon does not shift in longitude like other clouds in the visible atmosphere
>During the Cassini mission, the hexagon changed from a mostly blue [darker] color to more of a golden [brighter] color
Any explainations for the correlations between Saturn's radio/plasma-waves and the rotation of the ((hexagon)) yet?

>name fucked up
Saturn is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium - one can conject that the helium and hydrogen undergo an electric discharge from frictions (such as storms), causing signifiant glowing, as in a gas-discharge lamp.
>The emission spectrum of helium is white to orange; under some conditions may be gray, blue, or green-blue.
>The emission spectrum of hydrogen is Lavender at low currents, pink to magenta over 10 mA
We could expect gas-gas interactions in the atmosphere to cause enough friction for there to be electric discharges thorough Saturn at an high enough altitude. This would somewhat explain the color change of Saturn's hexagon as variation in amperage from velocity changes and / or composition of the pole.
But that doesn't explains nor the shape of the hexagon, and of course, why would it only occur there?

It's because of rotation. You can make it happen in a bucket.
