I would argue that it has to do with success in modern academia being related to obedient traits, not critical thought or overall intelligence, which is why many people who aren't particularly smart get degrees, they just follow the schedule. This means selecting for those who simply obey authority, regardless of what it currently is, and nowadays that translates to leftist/neoliberal ideology.

With that said, I don't think /sci/ is particularly left wing or anything, it just doesn't talk that much about it because there's no reason to, really. Also, you might argue /sci/ posters are not necessarily academically successful, but I bet the average poster is at least an undergrad, if they fail to go forward it's probably down to them not being able to do things out in the real world and wasting time in imageboards and such, which doesn't take away from the obedient traits I mentioned before. It's entirely possible that they attempt to enact the fake revolutionary spirit so present in academia, that of those who want to feel they're going against the grain while at the same time being some of the worst suckers for the system's tricks,
