All of that argument for a space as small as 2 lunar distances.. It is an orbit though..
Technically, what is going on is that the Earth, Sun and all the planets are orbiting around the center of mass of the solar system. This is actually how planets orbiting other stars are often detected, by searching for the motion of the stars they orbit that is caused by the fact that the star is orbiting the center of mass of the system, causing it to wobble on the sky.

The center of mass of our solar system very close to the Sun itself, but not exactly at the Sun's center (it is actually a little bit outside the radius of the Sun). However, since almost all of the mass within the solar system is contained in the Sun, its motion is only a slight wobble in comparison to the motion of the planets. Therefore, assuming that the Sun is stationary and the planets revolve around its center is a good enough approximation for most purposes.

A study was done in 2010. People were asked what ethnocentrism was. Only 21% of the people asked gave the correct definition. Elementary school kids here in the U.S are taught how the solar system works in, hm, beginning in first grade in the public system here? Aka the terrible system, and not even looking at what the private schools teach by then? I recall specifically that we had to know how the solar system works, what its planets and major sections were by 3rd grade.

The same kind of thing goes for geography; do you *seriously* believe we can't point out where we are on a map? By the end of high school, we had to be able to point out where every major country in the world is on a global map (it was a closed-book exam with 120+ countries when I was in HS myself, about 8 years ago I think).

So, do you really think 20% of Americans don't know 2nd-grader level facts, especially in the age of the Internet being able to teach these kinds of things to anyone curious in the space of 10 seconds? Do you really think the nation with the world's greatest space program doesn't at least teach its kids a bit about space, so that our teachers can tell us about our achievements in it during history class?
