Boeing (probably) didn't actually outsource coding on Starliner to India like they did on the 737 MAX. That's just a meme. The real issue with Starliner's code was the fact that they only ever tested the individual components, and never ran a test on the fully-integrated system before the first flight. Theoretically, if they were sufficiently confident in the quality of their code, this would save a bit of money and speed up delivery, but it ended up being an avoidable, highly public, fuckup instead.

The paper isn't exactly calling for F9-style rockets either.

>Physically, many of these vehicles have a conical shape similar to that of the Apollo command module. However, the cone is frequently truncated; and the cone half angle is often less than Apollo's 33 degrees. Ascent propulsion is supplied either by a large diameter plug nozzle engine situated around the base of the cone or by a number of high chamber pressure bell nozzle engines placed around the base.

They knew that going with TSTOs and no wings gave you much better margins than anything else, but they hadn't really settled on a design beyond that.

circa 5:00 if you want to get to the good stuff. This popped up on my feed and reminded me of something I've been wanting to ask
I've taken organic chemistry so I am well aware of how much hexagons contribute to life.
So when I see isogrids for rockets made in non-hexagon shapes I lose some faith in humanity.
Is this a manufacturing issue or something else entirely?

You're not incorrect about that, but it's nice to imagine ways in which SLS is even slightly less than a complete fuck-up. The idea with the Raptor boosters would be that SpaceX would be getting a joocy contract to develop a reusable Raptor-based booster for SLS that would give the stack enough performance to meet the legal definition of a Block 2 SLS. SpaceX would get paid $500 million to develop "Falcon Heavy Booster but Raptor and Bigger", and would be paid $250 million per booster supplied, for a total initial contract payout of about $1 billion. These big methalox boosters would be reusable for at least ten launches, ie 5 years of maximum flight rate SLS program cadence. They'd also be piss-easy for SpaceX to develop, because they'd make them out of steel rings which don't need TPS or anything like that.

It's just one big fuck up. NASA really really wanted to get back to the Moon and the ONLY way they could have convinced congress to give them the money would be to keep all shuttle contractors employed y'know? In hindsight they should have just thrown in a fuckload of money to Starship and New Glenn to get them there, and told Boeing they could build a little lander with shuttle tech. And made everything cost-per-ton instead of cost-plus.
I mean look at Artemis now: we have 99% of this. Gateway is being delivered and resupplied by commercial companies; landers are commercial companies. Artemis is just as flimsy as Bush's Moon and Mars plans. It's all hot air and you know that. The 2024 date is pure conjecture and even if they end up going there is no real will to have a prolonged presence. With the progress that SLS is doing you should be able to tell its not capable of performing anything other than a brief visit. And for what? A repeat of Apollo won't accomplish much.
Note that Musk never wanted to go to the Moon with Starship, his plans are Mars all the way because they have the meaningful plan to achieve great things.

SpaceX has customers that are not NASA, Boeing is a failing company and that's not going to change anytime soon.
Besides that, NASA relies on SpaceX and ULA as launch providers.
Nobody else in the US is capable of delivering cargo or personall to the ISS.
And as of now, SpaceX has a near monopoly on crew launches when excluding the russians.
ULA could supply the ISS, but Atlas and Delta are rather expensive vehicles, so that's not NASAs first choice for such missions.

So unless Biden has an extreme brainfart again, SpaceX will stay the main cargo/crew launcher for NASA wich is insanely lucrative for both sides.

I keep hearing about how the military wants to set up sensors around the Moon to spy on other spacecraft. It sounds unnecessary since there's not much going on out there, but it dawned on me that having sensors out there could double as asteroid monitoring missions.
