Who is the greatest contemporary physicist? Is it Penrose?

his most notable work was done in the 70's.
there's plenty of other people who did work around the same time and then died.
just because he still happens to be alive(and good for him) doesn't make him a great contemporary physicist(emphasis on contemporary).

my understanding was that Penrose's ideas on cosmology ("conformal cyclic cosmology") aren't directly at odds with anything in the LambdaCDM model. his ideas, as far as i can tell, are more just of an "interpretation" of cosmology and the implications of the very late future of a cold heat death. correct me if i'm wrong, though.

if you want somebody who is at war with mainstream cosmology, look at a fellow Nobel winner: Bob Laughlin

>Lee Smolin (/ˈsmoʊlJn/; born June 6, 1955) is an American theoretical physicist, a faculty member at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Waterloo and a member of the graduate faculty of the philosophy department at the University of Toronto. Smolin's 2006 book The Trouble with Physics criticized string theory as a viable scientific theory.
>The Trouble with Physics: The Rise of String Theory, the Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next is a 2006 book by the theoretical physicist Lee Smolin about the problems with string theory. The book strongly criticizes string theory and its prominence in contemporary theoretical physics, on the grounds that string theory has yet to come up with a single prediction that can be verified using any technology that is likely to be feasible within our lifetimes.
I haven't seen any defender of string theory sufficiently respond to these pointed out flaws so I'm inclined to side with the anti-string theorists.

I'm also a huge fan of his theory that the our universe is inside a black hole, and the pre-big-bang matter was the formation of a singularity that pushes so hard inwards it expands space, time, gravity, and best of all, that expansion causing particles to form by virtue of fighting against itself in n dimensions

which flaws?

smolin is a hack, also he dedicated a passage in that book to praise epstein, also he has ruined Jacob Barnett’s career by keeping him on to year 9 as his supervisor. so as far as i know he is a terrible physicist, like basically the worst anyone could name

The same accusation that's always thrown out when string theory comes up: that it can't be tested. I've found no real counter to this.
