The easiest way to transcend your primitive biological chains is to get so much money that you do not have to worry about your biological needs anymore and can just live as a free man. Most academics are not free, most academics write papers they would have preferred to not write.

Hey, I love pure math as much as the next guy and it is my goal to retire as a pure maths professor at a local university, but if you do not feel inspired by how people like Jim Simons can take relatively simple math and turn it into billions of dollars then you have no soul. Even something as simple as banking is basically a real world geometric series in action. These things just seem insane to me.
