Is it possible to spend 23 years in total isolation and remain mentally stable?

I always wondered if they used a black dude for this scene so that they wouldn't have to show a lot of ageing

depends on the capability of the craft. If there's a digital library and scientific monitoring equipment, he could potentially keep himself busy for a decent while. Also I don't remember how far away they were from Earth, but he could potentially communicate with them at that timescale.

No.

Humans are social creatures.

Even hikkis, neets, solitary confined prisoners, and other misfits have some regular human interactions.

Matt Damon went crazy from the isolation. Even though he spent most of it asleep.

Counter-question; do you think that watching Interstellar repeatedly for 23 years in total isolation and remaining mentally stable is possible ?

If he was not a coomer before he might as well be after the 23 years waiting.
He must have raided the underwear drawer of every other astronauts male or female and turned them into a crusty mess.
Don't get me started on how he must have been an expert of those rare porn movies they've smuggled in.

Don't you think this is a little different? He wasn't necessarily isolated: Every so often he would have an airplane land in his yard to drop off supplies. for example. Also, I think living (mostly alone) in the vast Alaskan wilderness alongside the multitudes of animals as a photographer would be extremely beneficial to one's spiritual needs and may actually block any feelings of isolation.
Let's not forget, this guy was kept busy all the damn time. He built that cabin with hand tools. He had no time for mulling over thoughts like isolation, which probably aided his mental/emotional health. literally just dont think about it bro!
