I think that his amazing quantitative talents left him a little bit myopic on matters of spirituality and philosophy. It probably just never made sense to him — this is a man who spent his life crafting concrete answers and proofs. Once he was finally faced with the ultimate open question of existence and couldn’t just shrug it off, it makes sense that he would find it deeply disturbing.
