What is the current state of psychopharmacological research? MAPS and Johns Hopkins seem to be mostly concerned with the neurophysiology of hallucinogens (especially psilocybin and not much else) but I barely see anyone talk about altered states of consciousness from a more holistic and qualitative point of view.

It’s exactly these guys why we have so little scientific research on psychedelics.

Most studies find that hallucinations are caused by the release of serotonin and other chemical reactions at the 5-HT receptor, but nobody knows exactly what causes them.
MDMA releases excessive amounts of serotonin without hallucinations, for example. At this point, sadly, we can only do scientific research by being curious enough to try it ourselves and contribute to scientific discussions on erowid.

The brain is too complicated for us to understand on this level, for now

Off topic but what's with the elephants? Are you trying to make me go looney?

They're referenced in psychedelic art because of the scene in Dumbo called Pink Elephants on Parade.

Well, people are getting less retarded about them and research, even if it's not encouraged, is now authorized at least. MAPS being the main contributor iirc

it's actually the opposite AFAIK, psychs block a particular serotonin receptor, and that receptor just happens to be involved in dampening activity in various brain areas, and so the lack of activity from those recptors allows these areas to become hyperactive. it's quite a clusterfuck
