Are storable non-toxic propellants (or storable propellants that produce non-toxic exhaust gases) a meme?

I've been brainstorming an idea for a "dirt cheap" fully reusable TSTO satellite launcher. Both the first and seconds stages land retrospectively like a falcon and the second stage is essentially a self-propelled permanently affixed payload bay with opening doors. I was hoping replace LOX with either N2O or N2O4 to make for cheap storable propellants and launch scrub security (the rocket can simply wait for the weather to improve to launch). I would even put an abort tower on the second stage despite having no crew aboard to reassure the customer that their payload won't go up in flames.

This "Dolphin 20" rocket will be the first member of the Dolphin rocket family. The "20" stands for the max payload to LEO in Tonnes. It may be followed up by a larger Dolphin 50 and finally a Dolphin ultimate (200 tonnes to LEO).

In my imaginary spaceflight company, we will establish the practice of naming our vehicles and major hardware after assorted sea creatures, though I'm still trying to find an appropriate name for the company itself.

And Ariane 6 is the most cost effective rocket to GTO because F9 has mediocre upper stage

>>/sci/thread/12021797#p12024545
They're years behind and falling further behind every year.
Ariane 6 was supposed to be an answer to Falcon 9's vertically integrated production. But now that that is almost flying SpaceX has Falcon reusability pretty much done and is crushing the market. And they're already working on Starship.
Ariane (and any other old space really) either needs to do like America did in the 60s, get ahead of the curve and announce a moonshot project or give up, stick its head in the sand and die a few years later.

It does make a lot of sense, why build huge above ground structures or spend years digging out your own caves when you have kilometer wide tunnels already sitting around doing nothing on a planet with very weak geological activity. You can start with thin-walled prefabs (since you won't have to worry about radiation) and at some point when you've got enough resources you can seal up the tube and start working towards pressurizing it, once that's done you don't really have to worry about living space ever again.

Moving pointedly away from politics, how large does a saltwater and marine life module need to be before you can use it as an air filter and food source? 10% the size of the rest of the station? Equal volume? Is there a minimum size on the marine module itself for being a self sustaining habitat?

I'd say anywhere between 40-60% of the entire space station. You need at least 25 square meters of direct sunlight to feed a person on earth even with the most efficient farming systems (Aquaponics or Aeuroponics). If you use artificial light coming in from all directions and build upwards you can probably get away with a volume of 3x3x3 meters to feed one person, same rule should apply to a state of the art salt water farming system. Of all the things you can have in a self sufficient space station, food production is probably what takes the most space.

Most spherical moons in the outer solar system are thought to have liquid oceans, except Io. Its pretty much all but confirmed for Ganymede (which actually has 3 layers of liquid water oceans inbetween various layers of ice, with the bottom ocean touching the silicate core) and we're very sure about them on Callisto. Then Titan is pretty much confirmed to have a subsurface ocean as well, plus Enceladus (biggest problem with Enceladus is its only around 100 million years old, probably not old enough for multicellular life). There is also evidence for the other spherical moons of Saturn and Uranus for having liquid oceans, but much less research has been done on them yet (though I suspect many of them do based on current research), and Triton is believed to have a subsurface ocean as well. Its very likely that subsurface liquid water oceans are a pretty common thing in the universe.

It's not a space film, it just by chance had a space setting.
I don't know how it even got made, but I'm pretty sure the entire thing is just a vehicle for either the writer or the actor. 1st wouldn't even make sense tho, because, spoiler I guess... the plot is worthless. There's no reason to care about him and his daddy issues because he has no personality except, bowing forward for the system really good and the entire last arch is a single massive plothole. He basically killed everybody to do exactly what they were ordered to do. The recon mission also turned out to be a dud, good thing everything lead up to it btw... And the psychological evaluation gimmick was just annoying, not dystopic.
Some scenes were pretty okay and I could see what the camera and lighting team were going for, but considering all the money they dunked into this, everything less would have been a let down as well!
Here are some way more better movies with a similar'ish premise or at least shared aspects:

>Moon,
an existential chamberplay with the same mood, but better
>Contact,
dunno why, but it's pretty good.... edit I now know why I mention it, I think I expected AdAstra to be a mix of contact and Oblivion2013
uhm, >Event Horizon,
what I was hoping the last arch to feel like
>Interstellar,
has peak sci fi drama (I cried)
>First Man,
Neil Armstrong biography, it's relatively dry because becoming an Astronaut irl is probably pretty dry, but you get to see the (spoiler) moon landing
>The Martian,
because similar tech level and fucking THE MARTIAN!
even the chick from Gravity was more sympathetic.

I hate that negative atmosphere but I loved the movie felt like a 70s scifi movie. So fucking slow. Working man in space and the miserable characters are balanced out by the cool visuals and the rad (ofc retarded who gives a fuck) moon buggy chase. Only thing I can't get passed is Brad Pitt sneaking onto a launching rocket. Seemingly between the engines. Oh well. It was a cool movie. Whole time I was thinking wew they don't make em like this anymore. Only it was a new movie.

Contact is great but it has aged into a daytime TV movie. It's worth mentioning because it is Interstellar but with Jodie Foster.

First Man is the best space movie in my opinion. All corners it cut (staying very zoomed in due to the lack of massive sets or well preserved equipment) all added to the immense immersion. The opening scene of the X-15 and the Moon landing sequence and door opening will stay with me forever. Wish I'd had an IMax within 500 miles for that hatch opening.

The Martian is great too and is aging like fine wine because it seemed a little too optimistic when I saw it in the cinema and now seems quaintly pessimistic.

Every artillery evolvement in history has provoked Armor developments to at least some degree. When it wasn't possible anymore for armour to catch up, they started looking at their tactics. Like retiring the battleline in favour of rock paper scissor unit development, planes and helicopters started to just go faster, fly higher, lower, deploy decoys, etc.

Therefore the scene is bull, since they headed into a sure death situation with a VIP on their rolling camping tables. The Apollo Landers were more suited for the situation than these stupid bugs. And to top it all off, I mean it's a movie, They didn't even look cool or lead up to a cool scene. It was just bland.

Define "decent". Pretty much all of the safer oxidizers are less potent than LOx. LOx is pretty much at balance between potency and safety. However, N2O is safer to handle and is still usable. The only two major issues are that it is a pain to turn liquid without cryogenic temperatures, and that it can spontaneously decompose if heated too much. Although on that last point, it's still safer than H2O2.

NOX is good. Easy to acquire, self-pressurizes, plumbing is easier than LOX, and can run non-cryogenic. Problem is, it’s density is worse than LOX... and it is super super sensitive to temperature. It's simultaneously more and less vulnerable to wind in it's current state. The much larger surface area of the Starship compared to Falcon means a simply larager amount of wind will push against it. With only one engine in operation the amount of correction it can perform for unexpected gusts is somewhat limited because if it goes too far off center the vehicle would flip. Once it's got more engines wind and undesirable translation shouldn't be an issue.

Lmao. Foam is about as useful as a liquor store in saudi arabia.

I have an idea but it’s a little crazy and most likely dumb. (If it works it wold have been tried before.) How hard would it be to give starship a “jacket” made of two sheets of steel, with liquid helium between it that could be taken down to superfluid temperatures? Superfluids have zero entropy and can conduct any heat away isntantly. I think the problem though is that a) it takes a lot of energy to cool down liquid helium to superfluid temps, and b) I assume it takes a shitload of energy to keep it superfluid, does it not? If this idea works you could also use superfluid cooling in an engine by pumping it around the nozzle. But again, i’m pretty sure this would have been attempted by now if it’s even remotely possible

All I know so that when you cool bosons down they take advantage of their relationship to the heisenburg uncertainty principle and all enter the same state. (This is possible with fermions too but you need to form cooper pairs and I know next to nothing about that). I just believe that superfluids, like bose-einstein condensates, have a bunch of strange properties because they are quantum mechanical in nature and I feel like we have yet to tap the full potential of this strange state of matter. Autistic but I did some math and I found that a starship with three sea level engines stacked on top of another Starship with 17 Sea level raptors gives us a payload of 20 tons to LEO while expendable.

A Starship with three vacuum engines stacked onto a starship with 17 sea level engines can put 43 tons into LEO expendable, and around 26 tons reusable. That’s about as much as a reusable Falcon heavy.

Note that this assumes that the tanks are just vanilla starships, the only different thing is the 17 - raptor mount for the lower stage.

I feel like if Elon were to keep doing F9 launches he would figure out a way to get the probability to 100% survival... but I guess it doesn’t matter because Starship is on the way so why bother with R&D resources. Because space flight everywhere else has become so stagnant that it became relatively easy to break into the market and slam dunk most competitors. Just following what everyone else was doing would mean that SpaceX would have to compete with others on a more equal playing field.
