Both. I saw an article or 2 saying some others thought they were making headway or were close.
Also, I got the problem to a point where I "thought I saw the answer," that it was only a matter of time before I worked it out, in the same manner I had gotten to that point before when I cracked the twin prime conjecture or had the insights on the Riemann. When I get to that point mentally, it usually means I have it, or at least am on to something. But that was 2 years ago, and I put it down, I had other stuff that took priority.

Needless to say, I think Collatz is very doable. If anyone was looking for an unsolved problem that they wanted to try and crack, and has a good chance of being solved, I would recommend people to work the Collatz.

It looks like you can solve for fraction Z, requiring the top to be a multiple of the bottom, swap in a dummy variable as that integer multiple, then repeat for Y and X , leaving you with 3 dummy vars. and 4 terms, 2 with n^2. Then it's just a matter of picking the dummies so the 2 sides of the equation match. It looked like the trick was to pick at least one of the dummies to be some multiple of n^2 to get the powers to match on both sides, and that you could empirically balance both sides like chemistry stoichiometry equation, but I didn't quite get it. I kept ending up with one of my dummies being a fraction. Maybe with some time.

tldr: it looks like you just scale it until it's large enough similar to finding a common denominator when adding fractions. which makes sense since that's basically the problem; adding 3 fractions.
