Howard Gardner's multiple intelligences theory was pushed very hard and is still believed by a large number of people (especially school teachers). The idea that somebody who is good at math will also likely be good at French or geography is very upsetting to a certain type of person. They would prefer that some excell in one subject area and others in something else, it seems unfair that the same handful of people are at the top the table in everything (except sports or acting or whatever else Gardner insisted should also be included in intelligence).
