Bad list for multiple reasons. Here's a good list

There, personalized tier list. For some, like me, that will point them towards research, and for others, it'll be something else.

Archaeology is a very academic field, if you're not interested in graduate school it is hard to have a lot of variety in terms of job options. Most undergrad archaeologists do some form of CRM (cultural resource management), which means you'll typically working before a construction site or being contracted to survey big wilderness plots/farms. If you think that's cool (or like jobs you get mix of desk and outside), and like it after an introductory class, definitely pursue it. I wouldn't recommend weaning off of stem classes, as archaeology is one of the more technical soft sciences, but I find there are lots of kids your age are just being funneled through stem and anthropology because they don't feel passionate about anything. Archaeology has some empiricism, and is the breaking field for a lot of "muh it's too hard" students. For example, I personally know no Archaeologist who didn't dual PhD in some form of Earth Science, as the field has become more advanced than "whoa here's some gold bro". If you like other cultures, and doing the job historians are fucking up, but want something more technical that rewards you with things you get to find, go for it or at least try it.

History is a bullshit field unless your interested in being an archivist, librarian, or curator. Scholasticism has stemmed away from preserving and studying, toward interpretation. Every History professor I have had labels themself as some sort of philosopher. The only based historians usually go into the aforementioned fields or learn a language and teach a culture-specific history (this is infinitely more cool with classical studies, where you get to mix history, archaeology, and language). And don't be fooled, Archaeology professorships are like all professorships, except that you may find their research more interesting. Like I said, undergrad desk jobs can be fun and I've heard people come away with great experiences working for the parks, indigenous peoples, or museums, and getting to go regularly to low level digs (albiet it's much more fun when you spend your time studying, making hypotheses, and trying to find the remains to back it up). Definitely take a class, and see what you think! Also keep in mind that historical archaeology is only a subfield, there's experimental archaeology (trying to reproduce cannons and boats and shit), paleobotany (looking at food and agriculture), and oodles more. Think about the kinds of research questions you want to ask; how did these people get here, what technology did these people have, how did these people organize themselves, etc. welcome to the field of anthropology.
>>12058024
>no point going to uni really, you can learn everything from home and all the material is available online.
This is true of almost all things. If a person wants to be intellectually stimulated they should go to uni unless they're inhibited by financials. Trades aren't for everyone the same way academia isn't for everyone. I studied at a vocational school for a year and loved welding, but preferred to be an archaeologist so now I'm just an aspiring archaeologist who can weld. We need these jobs and the pay is only as good as your work

>> No.12058164

>>12058123
>This is true of almost all things
Yes you can retain the knowledge but there is training associated with the hard sciences. Eg chemical reaction, physical experiments, lab practices...
>intellectually stimulated go to uni
HAHAHAhahahahaHA oh please. Exams are still hoop jumping. Its not like colleges are just smart people walking around anymore - especially in a field like archaeology.

Go to college for the qualification, anything else is delusion (I'm studying chemistry btw).

>I studied welding
Ok cool, but telling people to 'go to college its intellectual' meme is silly. If they are not actually interested in the subject they make it a crap experience for everyone else bc slowly the course get diluted, academia gets filled with hacks and people get landed in debt.

My point is EVERYTHING you can learn in a history/ economics course is online. Ok maybe archaeology has some dig sites etc...but there are way more hobby archaeologists, historians, programmers than there are physical scientists for a reason.

If anon is unsure they should not throw their life away in a non-dirctional persuit, accumulating debt in the most energetic years of their life (early 20s)

I never said trades are for everyone, there are lots of financial, management etc apprenticeships, which is why i said 'trades or apprenticeships'

>go to college for a qualification
Ye, I'm a scientific diver and get technical training from padi. This is technically private, but I'm getting it alongside an archeological education (which requires field experience). If I hadn't found this opportunity though, I think I would've still pursued my dive master, gotten a job seasonally alternating between dive tour guide and fly fishing guide, welding on contract when I need the money. Apprentiships are super hard homie, with a big age cut off. Most likely out of highschool he'd have to work 10hrs 14ish dollars an hour for a while before he got accepted into an apprenticeship. Once he's in, it'd be a good track but you're still working longer/hard hours for 18ish dollars per. The money doesn't get good until you master after a few years and get some bs cert that let's you sit on your ass for big money (ie crane operators). So you're advice is disgustingly true, in that there's no real point if you can't get a specialized niche. I guess if you never get a cool cert, you can always live under a bridge and be a troll making people pay you tolls...

contemplation of divine is intellectually stimulating?
Since a creator is MOST LIKELY non-existent, then what you're saying is that imagining a world that doesn't exist is the most intellectually stimulating, which is the job of an artist, not a scientist.
If your appreciation is for novels, art, music, etc. and not science then what you're saying is perfectly fine. I've read many religiously-inspired texts which are great (ex: Paradise Lost), but I enjoy these knowing that it's a complete fable written by an amazing writer. If I want to learn the truth of the universe, I'll open up a quantum mechanics textbook written by scientists.
Antitheism exists to point out that belief systems that have evil in them (slavery, mutilation, genocide) should be ended because if someone has a belief in a god that ordains this type of behavior, then it's not going to be surprising when they carry out these acts. Antitheism doesn't exist to point out the absurdity of theistic claims---this can't even happen because every person holds their own religious view--atheists would have to have 8 billion different arguments.

So the person that would study all the subjects in the God tier section would essentially be a philosopher, right?

>Where no guiding ideals are left to point the way, the scale of values disappears and with it the meaning of our deeds and sufferings, and at the end can lie only negation and despair. Religion is therefore the foundation of ethics, and ethics the presupposition of life.
Heisenberg was a devout Lutheran, nice bait though.

>the atheist likes Milton
Very cliche. The question posed to the anon was; why are you on a science board if you're religious? The answer is because some of us believe that the science and religion dichotomy is a false one. Also Theology is separate from both art and science, but a love of God transcends all fields.
>>12064800
Almost anyone who excels in their field will be considered a philosopher. Bohr, Heisenberg, Schrodinger, etc all at one point discussed their own personal philosophies, even in late antiquity there was no distinction between science and philosophy. So yes, I'd say if you were outspoken enough you'd be considered a philosopher. Just don't study philosophy desu, it's bad for your health.

Why do theists love to share that picture? You're equating nobel prize winners to random authors of pop-sci books. I could share the religious knowledge of the Pope along side some random ass Mexican and say "Oh look, they both claim to be Catholics, but look how different their views are" Also, all four people on the left were as atheist as one could be 120 years ago. Heisenberg was not "devout" in any sense, and he even wrote in his autobiography that he tried to reconcile science with religion and could not do it, and he only kept religion in his life from his own personal desires. If you cannot see that the only reason he was religious at all was because he was raised Lutheran, then you need to do quite a bit of thinking on that subject. Only two of the four on the right are outspoken atheists(one isn't even a physicist so who gives two shits about what he says about the subject) and the other two are embarrassingly coy about the subject.

Out of everyone in my close circle (friends and coworkers) there are atheists, mormons, and methodists, none of which who've read let alone heard of Milton. What's cliche about it? I'm not even meming here, but the only thing I can think of is that atheists tend to be more well read and intelligent, and reading Milton is not easy, so only atheists would understand?

>people are only religious by cultural extension
Heisenberg still believed in God, but excluding him as our primary example there is no religion-science dichotomy. Only scientists who choose to view their field from the optic of the divine, and those who secularize their love of their field. Also atheism has been acceptable for a long time, and many intellectuals have been comfortable expressing themselves as such since deism became a fad amongst the intelligentsia. Milton is cliche because it's the misinterpretation of that work which led to the exact view of God and knowledge that we're discussing. This is why Catholics and Orthodox hate him, because, like almost all romantic protestant writers, he created dichotomies that he couldn't control which lead to literary devices being taken as states of being. Paradise Lost has been one of the single most damaging works to Christendom next to Calvinism.

The absolute main reason why someone would be a Lutheran over Mahayana Buddhist is quite literally cultural extension. This is just simply a fact. I'd love to see a rational argument against it. Give me your best reason why you think I can pick 10 random Catholics from Madrid, imagine those exact people being born in western China instead and somehow they all turn out to still be Catholics let alone believe in a singular god.

Also, since you are a theist it seems, I'd like to hear your perspective on why pi's digits go on forever. Why this design choice? There are not infinite physical dimensions, and there are other natural digits that do not go on forever so why pick this one (there are a few others, of course but I'll have you choose just this one)? Just so you know, even though it should be obvious, I will not accept answers along the lines of "It's beautiful", "Only God can understand", "We'll find out once we're in heaven", etc.

I have a discussion question. It was asked in the current issue of NSPE's magazine, and as an engineering student I wanted to hear everyone's thoughts about it. Question: Should engineering technology degrees be accepted for PE licensure?

People here associate CS with software development and buzzwords, not research and mathematics. It's mostly due to how popular the major got among the techbro crowd, but also because a lot of less-than-excellent CS programs are pretty bad.

I'm not sure, I feel like it wouldn't hurt because if they aren't prepared then they won't pass, but I have zero experience with engineering technology degrees, I could also agree with the purist side of requiring a BS from an ABET school
I'm in aero so I have little experience with FE and PE sorry, are you aware of this being a big topic in the community or just something you saw mentioned once?

This is my first time really hearing about and looking at the issue. Apparently, it's been something that has been building up in the background for several years. It seems that there is an organization of engineering faculty called ASEE that recently passed a resolution calling for E and ET to be treated equally. This is what brought the issue to the forefront. The argument of the pro ET crowd is that there is an ABET accreditation process and that the subject matter outcome areas between the two overlap.
