Would it make more sense to just fling the asteroid onto the dark side of the moon? Then you can mine materials on the moon, not in orbit (which is more likely to fuck up). Use robots to do all the processing on the moon, then launch it to earth?

>> No.12015034

>mining on earth is toxic and evil!

>lets move the entire asteroid to earth's orbit rather than only the extracted materials
dumb

The real problem with asteroid mining is:
>robotic systems to actually mine it
>some level of processing to remove waste mass
and that's mostly it.

Ionic liquids as a catalyst solvent is a potential answer for processing materials.

>Why? Has a laser even been used like this?
Ablating material from one side creates a force to the opposite direction, not sure what you find confusing about that.

>mirrors
What else would you use? Sunlight is free in space and mirrors are cheap and you can easily get volatiles out of the rock by heating it up like that.

>printing
Surely you don't think people should haul up canisters and heat shields up to the asteroid when you got free waste material right there

>>12015029
Space is risky anywhere, if you can do it in the moon then you can do it in orbit and save some on the transportation cost.

>> No.12015120

>>12015090
Processing equipment/facilities need lots of square footage and produce a shit ton of waste heat. It’s cheaper and easier on a planet surface, especially the moon where you could just rail gun the payload back to earth.

>> No.12015201

>>12015120
Lot of asteroids are big, you will pretty much have the same ground thermal mass (if not better on an asteroid since they contain lot of gasses and ice which you can vent) and of course radiators. As for being cheaper and easier I wouldn't be so sure, maybe if you plan to bring a lot of human workers but if it's mostly machines it doesn't really make a difference. Pressurized areas need about the same level of construction in space and on the moon and unpreassurized it's about zero difference there. Material handling might be easier with gravity but then again if you use these sorts of advanced processes maybe zero g would be helpful hard to say. No real reason why you couldn't use railguns from an asteroid either.

Listen up faggots
The point of channels like Kurzgesagt is to inform normies about concepts so that once such a concept might actually become real, they'll have heard of it and be more supportive. It might be the difference that changes someone's vote or whatever.

I'd wager technological stagnation is at least partially down to the university credential system. Most professors are spending a third of their time on admin- and they have to go through all the crap of becoming a professor. Its BS.

Part of the reason we are not getting these things is money is going to fund a centralised bureaucracy rather than funding for innovation.

We do actually have nuclear fusion, its just not economically viable and risk averse yet- making it so is just a matter of systematic improvement of industrial process, the groundwork is done. We were once 50 years away from desktop computers with actual engineering application. Now computers are used in theoretical chemical drug design, all sorts of engineering (CADCAM etc). If you told people 80 years ago "ugh it will take at least 50 years for computers to have a meaningful industrial impact what the point ugh" "Computer science is hard a fuck ugh" "Computers are just a meme, they take up entire rooms to do a calculation ugh"

I like his content but I really don't like his speech impediment/lisp and think it's impeding on him becoming mainstream. He should hire someone else to narrate his videos.

Once again, this is going to be a case for doing this on Mars. Nobody is going to let you bring an asteroid of any significant size anywhere near earth. The 0.0000000001% risk of something going wrong would put the fear of god into the population, full stop.

You crash your asteroids on Mars. NIMBYism applies to space.
