My conclusion was that the author shows no empathy or insight, and I would not be surprised if they were a psychopath, narcissistic, or have other sadistic qualities. Beyond that I'm not actually sure what their driving motivation is. In the few interactions which amounted to some measure of substantive dialogue, I always got the impression of some guy at work. Doing his job. There's just something missing, something wrong there. Don't know, doesn't really matter.
