If you've ever done boxing or kendo you'd know how huge an advantage height is. Having longer arms, and having your shoulders be level with your opponent's head; both allow you greater range in a fight.

We're not really getting taller, so from an evolutionary standpoint, maybe there is no advantage. The increases you see in height are primarily due to better childhood nutrition, not genetic selection, and the height increase across the population stops once nutritional requirements have been met. So from that standpoint, height does signal that you were adequately fed, which plays a role in physical development besides height.

Protein, or lack of protein, especially animal protein. The best modern examples are the growth in the Chinese, especially northern Chinese (transitioning from a very grain heavy diet to a more protein rich diet), as well as the height difference between N. Koreans (very underfed) and S. Koreans. Native Americans were very tall, much taller on average than the European settlers. By the late 1800's, Americans were considered the tallest in the world thanks to the abundance of food available. During the 20th century, American heights plateaued and even declined, while many countries saw a height boom over the same time frame.

Being tall used to mean something. There is something called the square-cube law. When an object increases in size, it's volume increases at a faster rate, requiring greater structural power just to maintain strength parity with a smaller object.

This is where understanding the optimal size of a design comes into play. For humans, height used to matter as it indicated whether or not the individual had access to a reliable food source. We're conditioned to looking at larger members of society as the ones with the competitive edge in survival. However, with the advent of agriculture, this ceased meaning anything. The discriminatory tendencies still exist, but we're in a point in our civilization where being tall is actually a bad thing.

Tall was relatively meaning 5'9" as a large member of society. At 5'7" I would be classified among the largest members the Roman world for instance.

Animals have an optimal height, and for human males, that is between 5'6" and 5'9". Anything above that starts to become a hindrance.

Power becomes exceedingly difficult to produce for taller humans. Before I quit going to the gym for my master's studies, I was pushing roughly 100 kg (220 lbs) in a bench press while weighing 77 kg (170 lbs). Not exactly power lifter territory, but it's decently fit. My arm span is 54 centimeters, so to push that 100 kg, I produce 529.7 joules of energy. If we take a person at 6' in height and a similar proportion body shape (limb length, body fat, etc), that 6' person could only move 92 kg of weight. The extra 3 inches in height just cut the effective work by 8%. To equal the same mass output at 6', the individual has to produce 569 joules of energy. A hypothetical individual scaled up to 6' would also weigh 96 kg (211 lbs). A taller individual has to effectively put on nearly 24% more mass than I do just to make up for physics and biology. In effect, it takes far less effort for the shorter me to keep up with the power output or a taller individual.

The numbers only get worse as the height increases. The survival problem here should be apparent. A 5'7" human needs significantly fewer calories to be able to physically compete with a larger human. The only reason the shortest of us aren't dominating the globe is due to leverage effects of being taller. The taller individual enjoys more leverage, but the food intake to maintain that leverage increases rapidly with height. Should we have an interruption of food security in the Western countries, the first people who will start to suffer are the tall people.

Additional problems of getting much taller than 5'9" is a deteriorating lifespan and increased instances of diseases. Taller humans are actually quite a bit less hearty than shorter ones, which means that taller humans are much more reliant on a robust, modern health care system to survive - also indicative of why humans have been getting taller with the advent of advanced medicine in the early 20th century - tall people can now survive better. From heart disease to joint deterioration, tall people don't age well. People who survive past 90 are disproportionately made of people who were not tall in their primes.

Humans above and beyond 5'9" are basically the show animals of our species, much like large purebreed dogs. And if we look at large dogs, after normalizing for inbreeding effects, they live shorter and more problematic lives than smaller brethren. Tall people exist because it looks good, such as body builders who don't look good short.

So, in effect, stop worrying about being short and start thinking up of why its such a huge advantage. You'll live longer, life is physically easier for you and you're far less likely to live out the twilight years of your life with debilitating diseases.

Well, for any manlets who are interested: HDAC4 inhibitors might reactivate your chondrocytes (the same cells that make up your growth plates) and while supplementing an AI blocker (to prevent premature senescence) could potentially allow you to grow a few centimetres pass adulthood.

Antarctic krill peptide might be an excellent addition with this hypothetical stack as well.
