Octave as the exact same syntax. It just does not implement every function but I'd say you'll be fine in 90% of cases.
Also it's slower than MATLAB.

I would advise you to go for python, you'll find a lot of books too.

R is specialized for stats but it is a scientific computing language, there are packages for a diverse range of applications. Of course you could also try Sage math, I have never used it but I've heard good things.

If you want to do scientific programming, learn python. Seriously, don't fucking waste your time with matlab. I say this as someone who used matlab for all of undergrad because that's all my shitty program formally taught us. I finally started working in python when I came to grad school, and jesus christ it's like night and day. Matlab is so pitifully limited in comparison.
