Scientifically speaking, it is impossible to determine when the virus will end.
That said, countries like the USA and Brazil getting their outbreaks under control is a necessary prerequisite for that to happen, so we can say with a very high degree of confidence that it will not go away anytime soon.

True, SARS-CoV-2 has never been isolated and verified. According to Koch's rule it is still closer to a meme than to a real entity. The charme of a virtual virus is that you can ascribe anything to it that furthers your agenda as long as the people believe it and demonstrate their submission, e.g. by wearing a useless mask.

unfortunately, this is not the case. the virus has been reified globally, and with its 85/15 participation rate is regarded as a synthesis to the "50/50" gridlock of partisan civil war politics. in other words, the New Normal transcends elections. that which is done in the name of covid-19 cannot be voted against, as it is a global color revolution symbolizing acceptance of the new (post-national, post-democratic) management. next up is the 'great reset' of the financial system, which this virus-excused activity has bought permission for. refusal to participate in the masquerade is the only defense

In six months. The upcoming cold and flu season will count toward the numbers, so it will certainly climb significantly.

>What will be the CFR once all the real asymptomatic cases are factored in? 0.15?
CFR doesn't have a lot of value. First, every single virus has many asymptomatic carriers, but that doesn't ever seem to factor into CFR because it's hard to assess the frequency of asymptomatics without widespread testing.
Second, a virus with a very high CFR but a very low spread rate isn't of much concern. Overall mortality is all that really matters.

I wonder how Trump will handle this.

He's been anti-Russia ever since he took office. He tried to block them on multiple occasions from doing business in Europe. He also had a tough-guy attitude towards them, always talking smack on the podium on Russia.

But with the economy in tatters and people not going back to work, as well as the distrust of vaccines, how could he push Russia's vaccine on his own citizens, given his Russian rhetoric? Will he delay giving Americans vaccines for the next 4-6 months so that Americans can develop their own? Or will he go back on everything he'd said and done about Russia and give in to the Russian vaccine?

His press conference today should be nice.

That would be during another, different, flu season. The 2020-2021 flu season. Sure, if we start adding up all seasons of influenza it becomes very scary too.

We never shut down the world economy over influenza. Because the idea that a virus with the characteristics of influenza (very low mortality and extreme ability to propagate) could be stopped, or even would be worth stopping, is not realistic, it can only be mitigated.

At issue is nothing less than the creation of a sort of “health terror” as an instrument for governing what are called “worst case scenarios.” It is according to this logic of the worst that already in 2005 the World Health Organization announced “2 to 150 million deaths from bird flu approaching,” suggesting a political strategy that states were not yet ready to accept at the time. Zylberman shows that the apparatus being suggested was articulated in three points: 1) the construction, on the basis of a possible risk, of a fictitious scenario in which data are presented in such a way as to promote behaviors that allow for governing an extreme situation; 2) the adoption of the logic of the worst as a regime of political rationality; 3) the total organization of the body of citizens in a way that strengthens maximum adherence to institutions of government, producing a sort of superlative good citizenship in which imposed obligations are presented as evidence of altruism and the citizen no longer has a right to health (health safety) but becomes juridically obliged to health (biosecurity).

Everyone's already probably had it, children are immune, old people have less than 10 years left anyway, people with lung conditions like CF already have significantly shorter lifespans anyway, there is no point in wearing a mask. When there were plagues in 1348 and 1665, we fucking knew there were plagues. Germ theory wouldn't exist for more than another hundred years but we knew there was a fucking plague. If science was as developed as it was 400 years ago, we would just be thinking it was a bad flu season this year. If the chinese are practising making bioweapons they need to get their shit together because this one was ineffective as hell, but libs will always try to protect the minority even at the expense of the majority. If millenials thought they had a tough time with the economy, wait until gen z and gen alpha are trying to find jobs and buy houses, this will take years to correct, but nobody wants to say that the entire world overreacted to the threat of a "global pandemic"

Depends how you're tracking it. The CDC does release estimated deaths during each cold/flu season, but most deaths are tracked by year.

>We never shut down the world economy over influenza.
I'm not arguing for what we should or shouldn't do, but I have the U.S. statistics for flu/pneumonia deaths by year dating back to 1999. No year had more than 65k deaths combined, and we're at 150k pneumonia deaths alone since February (and nearly 250k total respiratory deaths when accounting for influenza and COVID-19). The comparison to the flu is not apt when looking at flu and respiratory deaths during the last 20 years.

If a vaccine is effective it may end next year.

But we've never actually made a coronavirus vaccine before. I mean, there was that cat one, but it actually made the virus worse.

Also, what we do know about other corona viruses is that the immunity period after getting it is on average 8 months.

If that holds true for this one, basically you'd be looking at getting a new vacinne shot every 6 months for the rest of your life.

Oh but if the virus mutates, good luck.

>Three times is marginal to you? How gigantic are the margins?
Three times zero is zero. Three times an infinitesimal amount is still infinitesimal. Likewise, three times (if at all) the mortality rate of the seasonal flu is still not that much. We can further qualify 'not that much' by recognizing the fact that this specific disease is lethal mainly to the elderly and the weak, unlike some other historical diseases that targeted children in higher, or equal amounts. As such, most people killed by this pathogen are people who were, by and large, on their death beds anyway. The only reasonable (government) would have been to protect the elderly and the weak (e.g. AIDS, etc). It is ironic, that some states did the exact opposite, by killing off the elderly via negligence, OR closing off the entire state young and old alike. The former was a mass genocide e.g. in NY by Cuomo, the latter was a criminally bad decision that cost the country the economy.

>300 active cases
>14 days
>300 new cases / day

So as I understand you don't clear the virus at least in on month but you are really just "infectious" in the first week. So of the 300 actives only 75 where infectious.
Now of those 75 for sake of simplicity the infectivity (Rx) happens during one day, so 2 weeks ago 10 people where infecting (the same if we do 300/30days = 10). One person become "infector" after one week of infection, but because we simplify to one day during that first week lets say it's on the 10th day of infection (7+7/2).
With Rx of 1: 10*1*2= 20
With Rx of 2: 10*2*2=40
With Rx of 3: 10*3*2=60
to pass from 300 active to 300 we need a Rx of 15
Rx of 15: 10*15*2=300

So you had 300 "supersuperspreaders" or something is wrong with your data
