Oh wow, so Tesla has generated 56 times more money then the government invested? I guess subsidizing Elon Musk is one of the extraordinarily rare cases in which the Government actually made an investment that produced more than it consumed. On top of that net worth, it generates 24 billion a year, or nearly five times the subsidy's value in revenue.
But then, that's not really welfare is it? Welfare is given out to people who are not participating significantly in society, theoretically to preserve their wellbeing long enough that they can return themselves to health or productivity.
Of course Bernie wouldn't understand any of this because he's an economically illiterate traitor and commie.

Bernie Sanders recently introduced a bill that would create a special, one time tax on 60% wealth gained by billionaires between March 18th and August 5th. This is of course retarded at multiple levels, since the vast bulk of that wealth increase during that time period is merely from stock prices recovering from the sharp drop they had at the end of Feb/beginning of March, alongside with the Fed purposefully propping up the market (which is really good for old people with pensions & 401ks) via money printer going brrr. And of course forcing all the billionaires to sell that much stock at once would crater the price, since well who would have the cash on hand to buy it? Well aside from foreign operations. You know Geely or BYD would be first in line to buy Tesla shares.

There's also the issue that the bill is very unfriendly towards these wealthy people who invest heavily into the industries of the nation. Even if the bill doesn't hurt their wallets, it'll tell them that this nation is no longer friendly to them and that they might have to move out. Which is the opposite of what this nation needs right now.

Now, lets reel the discussion back to space flight related topics. How would an interplanetary stock market work? Would there be tight regulations on business information to reduce the advantage/disadvantage communications delay would have between planets? Would the idea be abandoned completely and each planet would have their own independent market?

>Who gives a fuck if his rockets can re land when the "rockets" are too weak to even leave earths orbit. It's pointless.
They can leave Earth's orbit, but even if they couldn't then the fact that they can land is still important. Leaving the Earth's surface is the most expensive and limiting part of the journey in space. Having a vehicle to get through that part that is cheap would enable greater payloads to space.

The comm lag issue is interesting to consider, especially since it won't be static - as objects move around the sun who has the lowest lag to other markets will change. Honestly i don't think regulations will be needed for this - everyone will know what the other lag times are, since orbits are predictable, and will take it into account when deciding to make trades.

Lack of interest, and lack of any good reason. Sure, there are tons of valuable materials in space, but they're in plenty quantity on Earth already. Colonization to maintain the human race if Earth were to become inhabitable is a noble cause, but that is too far into the future for most people to consider important. Really, the only good reason left to take to space (other than for the spectacle and scientific interests) is so that others won't take it, and most of the nations who have space flight capability have signed a treaty swearing off on it. The ones who haven't aren't interested in starting a space grab, yet.

Meanwhile in Korea.
>So far, the South Korean government has a 3 trillion won ($25.2 billion) budget for the development of space rockets, spending 1 trillion won for the Naro-1, South Korea's first carrier rocket, and 2 trillion won for Nuri, the country's second carrier rocket. The KARI developed both rockets.

"The costs spent by the South Korean government to develop the two rockets were 10 times higher than those spent by SpaceX," Kim Seung-jo, former president of KARI, said in a recent interview with ChosunBiz. "But the South Korean government's outcomes in its rocket projects were far behind the Falcon9 rocket produced by SpaceX."

I don't know how much I support this idea. Space basically gives us a chance to learn from the lessons of the first age of exploration. Trying to use space to gain a massive advantage over say, China, means you either have to act preemptively. Or just invite china to engage in a space arms race.

I'd like to think that people in the West and even China have gotten so used to peace that even the threat of a conventional war will be enough to deconflict. Modern war between superpowers would be hell on earth.

So anons, with orbital construction hopefully kicking off within the next 10-20 years, what sorts of (semi)autonomous space drones would you envision helping at construction projects? Pic related is an observation drone from the gateway foundation. I'm thinking humans would handle the complex shit like assembling or installing medium/small-ish sized modules or something while these observer drones spot for tools flying away and provide vision for other drones moving larger pieces or modules, like a truss segment. There would also be grabber drones that retrieve loose/irregular shaped tools/debris, or for delivering tools/ parts to workers similar to those described in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ6wwA9wXog
Drones for grabbing on to and maneuvering and position large segments would also be needed on an orbital construction project where robotic arms can't reach to effectively. Lastly, some sort of central drone port where they can refill their reaction propellant/recharge would be required. A company could churn out a ton of these small, standardized drones and operate them for orbital projects. What are your ideas for space drones? Neat idea for 4ASS?

Software is the main area that is exciting now that moore's Law is winding down. Construction in space is,if anything, a way way way easier problem than trying to make a self-driving car-less chaotic environment and you can move much more slowly in what you do. It's not that hard ot make a robot that can rotate objects and screw things in,which is most of what they would be doing. Humans qwouldn't be totally absent, but it's much more efficient to have one person watching 15 robots build stuff.

People say space is inherently political, and then go on to complain about black people. Wanna talk about space related politics? Talk about the NSSL awards, or how to make sure everyone gets a part of the Lunar south pole, or the best landing spot on Mars for a colony.

But I beg you. Shut the fuck up about stuff that belongs on other boards, if I wanted to watch people complain I'd go to /pol/. Only whitepills allowed in this thread.

The GoFast rocket was amateur-built and was capable of putting 18 kilograms into a 100 kilometer suborbital trajectory. It used a “S” motor that masses 272 kilograms.

Will the illicit use of alcohol and cannabis be banned within lunar and martian colonies in the future? I think there is a very real chance of us seeing permanent Moon and Mars colonies within our lifetimes, and they will likely impose restrictions on what you can use. smuggling shit will be incredibly difficult but i could see it happen
illicit use of alcohol and cannabis will probably be banned or heavily restricted because elon believes it makes people lazy, which you dont want on a mars colony

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I’m really interested in the logistics of shipping supplies. Idk if Elon wants a “mega city” or if he’ll let anyone (such as Mormons) set up their own personal micro cities. If it is the latter, you could probably ship anything so long as you buy the cargo flights

If there’s only one mega city SpaceX will be the ones in charge of shipping all supplies. And of course he won’t be the only one doing this though. As soon as Elon proves it’s possible to live there people like Bezos will dump money into going

The Mormons could start their own colony with their own ships once the Patton on Starship expires. Once they start other groups like anarchists, subcultures, or stateless peoples could make colonies. Mars will be a true patchwork of very different cultures. One city will legalize most drugs and smuggling drugs cross planet is a lot easier then smuggling them from Earth.

I feel like the added complexity and potential failure modes can't possibly make up for the weight savings. Plus, your payload placement is going to be extremely awkward- with fairing volume constraints because the fuel has to flow past it somehow. Also no differentiation between sea-level and vac engines.
It's a bad idea, both insane and stupid.

bros, you need to take the SMOOTH PROCEDURAL CURVES pill

623t wet mass and 53m tall, with kerolox 4.5m 5x NK-15 booster and 4m 6x RD-58 upper stage, can lift up to 25 tons into 300km x 8.6° orbit, and the design even plays nice with mechjeb ascent guidance for a s m o o t h single burn ride up to orbit with the engines cutting out exactly at apoapsis

7x RD-58 rather, still the only decent multi ignition upper stage engine I have
also still need to set up internal RCS thrusters on the upper stage, but that's always a fucking pain because each directional port has to be placed manually and carefully moved into the tank for it to not look like shit

This, a system for organizing society is required in which all other factors except personal merit and civic duty are irrelevant. Explicit contractualism involved in citizenship wouldn't hurt either, as is obviously evident you run into problems with a government which cannot be easily held legally accountable to it's citizens.

RCS autism: successful
I might adapt the upper stage into some kind of tug by replacing the payload adaptor with a docking port and either increasing batteries or adding a power source but the RD-58s only have 7 ignitions right now and a max of 15 with future upgrades, so it would have a pretty limited lifespan even with orbital refueling until I can replace the engine

Decided I wasn't getting quite enough TWR at launch and added another NK-15 in the center, made a few minor tweaks with avionics/RCS/batteries, and then I decided to make a heavy version for shits
Side boosters are identical to the center core except obviously have nosecones above the avionics ring so tooling costs will be minimal, and now this bad boy can lift up to 75 fucking tons to low orbit. It uses propellant crossfeed between the cores like was originally planned for the F9 Heavy instead of throttling down center core like the F9H ended up actually doing, mostly just because crossfeed in KSP is way fucking easier than getting mechjeb to do thrust management stuff that's super easy IRL.
Upper stage and fairings will probably be rebuilt and widened to the full 4.5m diameter by the time I actually have a need to lift 70t+ in my KSP game for hauling station parts and shit, and I also need to get some decent hydrolox engines or something to make a big dick dV upper stage for interplanetary missions since even with just a 1 ton payload this kerolox is maxing out at around 15km/s.
