Design is being rapidly improved (not just thrust performance but manufacturability and simplicity too) which means each engine is unique and thus has its own quirks to deal with.

Once they hit a design that they're confident they can cheaply and rapidly manufacture hundreds of without sacrificing performance, they'll shift their focus from large scale development changes to fine tuning and chasing little issues like sticky valves etc.

The fine dust on Mars is almost all iron oxide, because iron oxide is soft and unstable enough to be ground that fine through billions of years of exposure to Mars' weak wind dynamic pressures. Iron oxide shouldn't be able to get INTO the moving bits of the engine anyway, but even if it does it shouldn't pose any real issue. The first (many) Starships to sit around on Mars will be unmanned and will have enough leftover propellants to burp test the engines a few times over several years, so they could conceivably prove that the engines will be reliable for return flights before they ever send people.

lmao, no.
The dust did nothing to Curiosity's wheels.
The wheels are torn up because Curiosity has been driving across exposed bedrock with an uneven surface. Projections of harder minerals poking out of the bedrock caused stresses to concentrate in the wheels and make them flex, especially around the tips of the zig-zag traction pattern. This flexing caused the metal to fatigue and crack much more rapidly than they thought it would because they chose to make the wheels out of FUCKING ALUMINUM instead of steel or titanium, both of which have a fatigue limit that can allow something that experiences flexing to last literally forever.
It's all the eggheads' fault.

It used to be, went to shit by an influx of newcomers. Same is happening to 4chan, with the difference that this sites community is putting up more of a fight, prolonging the death. I'm almost certain you're projecting and you came here after the 2016 election directly from /r/thedonald and you post anime because you can't really have a username here and have no other way to get attention because you're some retard with nothing else to add.

Anime posting in /sfg/ wasn't a problem until you came over here to shitpost about Demo-2, people got annoyed, and you decided to double down on it. Just kill yourself, you're going to end up doing it anyway and you may as well get it over with.

Objectively false. Mushrooms are fantastic sources of b vitamins, riboflavin, phosphorus, and niacin. They are also easy to integrate into a food production pipeline since they help break down plant and human waste into fertilizer while not needing much more than adequate moisture and temperature. They also give psychological benefits-a rich diet of varied foods is very good for the quality of life of colonists.

doesn't the lead up to unconciousness take less than 10 seconds, even with a moderately slow leaking suit like that poor guy that got exposed to it in a NASA vacuum chamber? If I remember his accounts correctly you feel the moisture in your mouth/on your eyeballs boiling and cooling and then pass out pretty much immediately, and wake up without any real complications once your blood gets oxygenated enough again. Didn't really sound all that bad. But the panic while waiting to experience that would be awful.

Exposure to real vacuum is different to exposure to vacuum in a controlled environment though. In space the starward side of your body will be exposed to a temperature of several hundred degrees while the opposite side will be deep frozen.
It would be extremely painful.

Raptor burns SO clean compared to RP1 in F9, that you get 3 mach diamonds on the exhaust at baseline 1ATM. That's sick.

Compare that to the M1D at full power (pic related), and you can see the bleed off of the thrust extremely quickly. A fully fueled F9 rocket (first and second stage combined) is 549,000 kg or 605.1689 tons.

It's assumed that the SN5 test article with 1 Raptor and fueled for the hop, weighed in the ballpark of 150 tons. That single Raptor at full thrust, yeeted the entire vehicle a 150 meters, at point which they had to drop the thrust to somewhere around 50% for the hover, before reducing it for the landing and pushing it back up to like 60-70% for the landing sequence before shutoff. So you can probably make a guesstimation that a single Gen1 Raptor is sufficient to carry 199 tons (TWR of <1.0) up to N height based on fuel capacity. Thus, SN8 with 3 raptors can move up to 597 tons worth of mass easily up to 20km.

Additionally, if over say a decade SpaceX's iterative design philosophy leads to a similar optimization of the Raptor as M1D achieved, wherein it achieves a Block 5 type classification and ends up with a TWR greater than 1.1x, then calculating that down for mass, could mean that a Starship COULD achieve SSTO point to point (p2p) around the earth with launch to boundary of LEO, cruise for 5-10 minutes, followed by a small re-entry burn and then a landing burn for propulsive landing without a belly flop maneuver. Additionally in ten years (if we factor in ML/AI for aiding in such research), I'd reasonably expect material sciences and chemical engineering sciences to have advanced to a point where a highly optimized Raptor might deliver 1.2x or 1.3x TWR at full thrust. In which case a triple configuration raptor design would allow for SSTO with certainty for p2p travel around the world either delivering 1-150 people per transit or 150-200T of mass per transit.

>Were they burning actual methane? Isn't it less power dense than RP1?

In theory, but the density curve improves significantly with additional cooling, to the point that the stage fuel-mass ratio is closer to what you see in a kerolox booster. Unseen disadvantage of kerosene as a fuel include limitations on achievable vs theoretical efficiency (97%-ish for RP1, >99% with Methane), and the lower specific impulse of kerosene over methane. In practice, methane makes for a better rocket fuel than RP1.

also the temperature of LCH4 is in the same range as LOX, so less insulation needed between tanks, you absolutely do not want oxygen ice in your plumbing

>>11975648
Liquid hydromeme is a red herring, it's a pain in the ass to liquefy (half of it phase changes and goes gaseous again just as it turns liquid), and it escapes from everything because the atom is so small, and it's constantly wanting to boil off. And it's less dense, so it takes more tank to begin with, like 3:1 vs LOX. LCH4 is about 1:1 with LOX, which is more weight.
Isp is kind of like the rocket equivalent of MPG. You get more thrust per drop of fuel with high Isp, but high Isp engines like ion engines can barely blow out a candle. To get off Earth you need thrust. Methane is better Isp than kerosene anyhow, it's the second best after hydrogen, and so much easier to deal with.

>Why did DC-X go nowhere?

Politics. The USAF was ambivalent about it because it was a low-cost white/gray world "silver medal" project that was given to them after the Pentagon cancelled that classified air-launched TSTO that probably flew in the early 90s, and NASA hated it because of "not invented here" syndrome.
