I like to imagine that when our boys Bob and Doug strapped in to come home, Gary hopped into his replica Dragon simulator inside his house to start running through scenarios, just in case. His wife, standing timidly in the hallway, calls out "Gary, dinner's waiting..."
Gary stops midway through the sequence, furrows his brow, and takes a deep breath. "Moira, right now there's two American heroes about to make the long journey back home to Earth. A million things could go wrong, and that means I've got a million things to plan for down here. They don't get to have dinner up there tonight, so that means I don't get to have dinner down here."
It's a speech she's heard countless times, and it's a scenario she's lived through every Shuttle launch. She bows her head, resigned, and walks back towards the kitchen.

So because ladders exist, we should just have completely unregulated immigration into our country??? We don't have a stable enough welfare network to manage an influx of millions of people
>ALSO
The more poor people we let in from poor countries, there the per capita carbon footprint is low, the more we pollute
the USA has one of the highest per capita carbon footprints on earth, the last thing we need is a few million more people let in to be elevated to that level, that's very damaging to the earth, life isn't fair lmao some people are born losing
Immigration from poor countries into rich countries is damaging to the environment, and speeds up global warming

That was 35 years ago, though, and spaceplanes should have been eliminated from consideration as anything other than crew lifeboats from the very moment that the DC-X first flew.

Orion would have been oldspace kino if they'd fast-tracked both it and Ares 1 and had them ready to fly astronauts by 2012-2013, so that we could have had a solid decade and a half or so of NASA astronauts riding "the big stick" to the ISS. An aerospace agency ultimately. Its goals are mishandled by politics, but it still tries to be a space agency.

>I will keep an eye on SLS only because the money seems to be there to produce it. So why not make the best thing possible, or at least watch it.
That's not how NASA funding works. It doesn't get a lump sum of money to do whatever. Each dollar is assigned to a project to be spent in a set way. Cutting SLS and redirecting the money is impossible, because canceling SLS would just take away the money being spent on it. It doesn't justify the misuse of funds on Congress' behalf but it explains why NASA is so constrained.

It's an enormous power hog. You need a 200MW nuclear reactor to make it work, and at that point you can skip the VASIMR entirely and use fission fragment for thrust plus MHD power generation.
>EMDrive is impossible no? Or am I retarded? I thought reactionless drives are impossible.
There's a new model where the conserved value is matter+energy+information and information is not constant between reference frames so you can cheat a bit. Current best results are 0.1N/kW but the researchers are filing a patent before publishing. This already makes it better than ion drives including VASIMR if the results can be replicated and verified.

So V*rgin Galactic just unveiled their render of a supersonic commercial jet. My first thought is that it's either never going to get built or it's a decade away, but even if they build it I'm struggling to see how it can be profitable with such high costs per seat.

It has capacity for 9 to 19 people, the Concorde could fit 92 to 128 people. It's faster than the Concorde but that also means it's going to be louder so there's going to be even more outrage when it flies over land. This screams investor fodder, Branson has already started selling his SPCE shares to fund other parts of Virgin.

While alot of the principle technologies that went into the Falcon 9 have been around for some time, the iteration used on the Falcon are much more modern. Such as advanced computing processes, streamlined manufacturing processes, and added resilience. Also, retropropulsively landing boosters was something no one else has done before. The closest example was the DC-X, but that was meant to be an SSTO rather than a booster. The Falcon 9's style of recovery is fairly novel and it surprised even NASA who thought that such a design wasn't worth doing.

Unless they can produce a supersonic commercial jet for a fraction of the price of a Concorde, I don't see it happening. Fuel costs have come up since the already high prices in the 1970s but if we assume they had the same expense on the same routes and just look at the seat capacity, the Virgin jet would have to charge almost 7 times more per seat at full capacity.

The average round-trip price for Concorde was $12,000. At 7 times more per seat, Virgin would be charging around $84,000. At that price, it's a very small market they're appealing to and being able to fly somewhere in a short period of time matters less today because all the work and meetings that can be done online. There will be more public outrage with noise concerns because there's no illusion the average member public will eventually be able to fly on it. They could be stuck trying to do overseas commuter flights in a decreasingly small market.

>> No.11970169

To be fair, Concorde more or less had a per-airframe cost that was on par with the B-2. That sort of ambitiousness in on aircraft design is really only feasible with state-level sponsorship (and state-sponsored carriers to buy it), good luck getting private investors behind you once you tell them that your Concorde successor is going to take $20bn to develop and will cost $700m per airframe.

Unironically our best bet for a true Concorde successor is probably the Chinese, if they ever learn how to build a decent afterburning turbofan, that is.

>> No.11970174

The math for profitability is a little more complicated than that, because you're bound by the time it takes to make each trip as well as the cost per seat. If you can make more trips per day, the per-seat margins don't need to be as great to amortize the cost of the airframe (or spaceframe) in the same time period.

Bloody unlikely. Their latest greatest domestic plane is leftovers from cheap 60s/70s US planes with some modifications to the wings and they still had to import US turbofans to get it flying.
And I don't think the US is planning on selling them a lot of shit these days.

I agree, it's very hard to approximate the price difference, but I don't think we should assume that the Virgin jet will be popular enough to keep it flying that often with extremely high seat prices when the Concorde had only twice daily overseas flights at it's peak.

We could look at fuel costs which is the biggest expense in the airline industry. A 737-900 gets nearly 99 passenger miles per gallon, the Concorde had 15.8. It would be harder to operate the Concorde today because they were only competing against jets that had half the PMG of the 737. If the Virgin jet is twice as efficient as the Concorde, it would still only be 4.5 PMG, 22 times more expensive than the 737. This is why super sonic commercial flights will never have mass appeal until they get their fuel costs down.
